jmacd··on Crypto crash deepens, stocks slip
As an outside observer, who has no crypto holdings at all, but is very deeply invested in the public stock market with a heavy weight on technology stocks... this doesn't look like a crash to me at all. It just looks like some steam being let off and old investors cash out and new investors get more comfortable with how much and where to invest.

I consider crypto currency as it is to be an elaborate Ponzi scheme (personal view), but even with that cynicism nothing about this dip looks unhealthy to me. (I have views on what ultimately happens, but I will hold back on that)

jmacd··on Next.js 10.2
I hope users of OSS can get over this sentiment. With decent and anonymized telemetry data maintainers can make better decisions that benefit the majority of users. Without it, it is the loudest users who get the most attention.

There are major OSS projects with no telemetry that are hamstrung by their lack of insight about which platforms and systems their software is running on.

Everyone should have the right to turn it off, but I think this is going to become the norm.

jmacd··on Farming robot kills 100k weeds per hour with lasers
Operating expense is different from a capital expenditure.
jmacd··on Mighty Makes Google Chrome Faster
A Mac with the M1 chip was the greatest improvement of perceived speed of my browser (and internet generally).
jmacd··on Farming robot kills 100k weeds per hour with lasers
This is in no small part because of the massive subsidization of fuel for farming in most countries. Not only is the fuel for agriculture heavily discounted, but what you do pay can be written off against your revenues.

Same with most fisheries.

If governments want these sectors to go green, that is going to be a very big and painful band-aid to peel off.

jmacd··on Brazil’s mismanagement of Covid-19 threatens the world
Breeding ground for variants. Much more likely to happen in such a high infection population. Then they spread to the world.
jmacd··on Facebook reveals 'SuperCell' tower to increase connectivity in rural areas
This is the business model that Telesat trying to make work. While they are behind Starlink in terms of rollout, they are a credible manufacturer/provider for a service like this

jmacd··on N.H. Announces It Will Sue Massachusetts over Cross-Border Income Tax Collection
Can you give some examples of the difference in services between states? In Canada we use "equalization" formulas and generally, services are pretty similar across the country (with some exceptions-- education, health)
jmacd··on Optimizely to be acquired by Episerver
Speaking as a customer, it feels like this is exactly what is happening to Mode Analytics right now.
jmacd··on Tesla touchscreen wiper controls land driver with fine after crash
Oh. Dear. God.

I wouldn't have guessed.

jmacd··on Tesla touchscreen wiper controls land driver with fine after crash
Tesla's automatic wipers are bizarrely bad. At one point Elon touted a new neural net upload that was going to make them better, but they actually got worse.

My Dodge truck has much better automatic wiper control than my Tesla.

jmacd··on Show HN: Obsidian – A knowledge base that works on local Markdown files
Wow, based on your history of submissions you've really been obsessing over this problem for quite a while. Kudos on continuing to improve your products/positioning.
jmacd··on Tesla cuts car prices by up to $5k
It seems pretty obvious that the previous prices were inflated to capture the federal and other subsidies. It's clear those aren't coming back, so they are adjusting to the actual market forces.

jmacd··on Co-living in London: Friendship, fines and frustration
Flatshares are completely normal in many UK cities and they are marketed directly as Student Houses in places like Cambridge. Rightmove even has a special checkbox for them.

I've never heard it called "co-living" however.

We should do something to get those people in front of Toronto startups. Mind posting about this in the StartupNorth group on Facebook? https://www.facebook.com/groups/startupnorth/
jmacd··on IBM says Swift is ready for the enterprise
Hilarious that IBM still thinks of the enterprise as the arbiter of quality. Consumer is now setting the defacto standards, including on things like information security.

IBM's days of having a voice in that conversation are probably more limited than they realize.

jmacd··on Tell HN: I want out
You say "clients", which makes me think you started a services firm. That is about the worst business you could possibly start if you truly wanted freedom. You are always beholden to the customer.
jmacd··on Firefox 29
This is sad. Firefox has been reduced to playing catch-up on UI and struggling to get to parity with Chrome on features. The vision is dead.

Perhaps Mozilla needs to move on from web browsers? Perhaps their work is done, or the torch needs to be taken up by someone who can lead again.

I'm not sure what's in store for Mozilla, but if it's just a Chrome skin on a Mozilla rendering engine, then I don't think it's good.

jmacd··on Atlassian Valued at $3.3 Billion
I met Mike and Scott in 2004 and they were incredibly humble, focused and benevolent then. From what I can tell they seem to have maintained that through the years and all their success. They also had a President of their company names Jeffery Walker, who was one of the kindest and most interesting guys I've ever met.

This is a company that is learning too. Since the acquisition of HipChat they have made the product dramatically better. If they can get a good model in place for further acquisitions, and they can continue to successfully launch their own products as well as they have in the last few years, then this company is on track to being worth a hell of a lot more than $3.3bn.
