jlpom··on Why has there been so little progress on Alzheimer's disease?
I don't know why you're being downvoted, your comment is spot on.
jlpom··on Show HN: Blast – Fast, multi-threaded serving engine for web browsing AI agents
No, it's to automate tasks that can't be done using an API, like RPA.
jlpom··on Why did Windows 7 log on slower for months if you had a solid color background?
*It causes bad UX.
jlpom··on Show HN: A Chrome extension that will auto-reject non-essential cookies
Are you aware of https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/consent-o-matic/?
jlpom··on Why did Windows 7 log on slower for months if you had a solid color background?
I rather think the right word is clunky: one of the dev is attached to Server-Side Decoration/against CSD for some reason (none of his arguments make sense), so every stock app are difficult to read and taking unneeded screen space. It's just bad UX.

jlpom··on Launch HN: Browser Use (YC W25) – open-source web agents
Hi, great contribution! Can you highlight how does it compare to https://github.com/TaxyAI/browser-extension which also uses the DOM?
jlpom··on TopoNets: High performing vision and language models with brain-like topography
It increases modularity and small-worldness, which are in my book critical for AGI (surprised by the way that this publication doesn't cite https://www.nature.com/articles/s42256-023-00748-9).
jlpom··on Engineering Sleep
I don’t think any serious biologists agree with it. There is a hard physiological need to repair cellular damage from metabolism, UV (this a big deal in unicellular species), etc. If this theory was correct, and it is possible to do it entirely while awake, there would be species (apex predators in particular) that would have evolved without the need for it, like everything that is not a hard requirement. But this is not the case.
jlpom··on Engineering Sleep
> Alternatively, perhaps elevated orexin levels during the day cause wakefulness such that you just don't need as much sleep, regardless of how efficient the sleep is.

As noted elsewhere ITT, there is a strong biological need for sleep, and its main role is very likely to reduce reactive oxygen species (though the amount needed vary by genetics) Orexin levels increase the noradrenaline ones, which is one of the few antioxidants able to reach neurons (along with melatonin) and by this way also increase slow wave sleep, making it more efficient. So yes, this could be a way they would need less sleep.

jlpom··on Engineering Sleep
For me they significantly increase REM, it seems at the cost of slow wave sleep. (this is logical as orexin agonism prevent REM sleep)
jlpom··on Engineering Sleep
Repairing cellular damage (mitochondrial and main DNA) from oxidation thanks to slower metabolism is the main reason. On a side note taking vitamin E (an antioxidant that passes the blood-brain barrier) seems to have slightly reduced the need for sleep for me.

Your comment takes 630 bits, the screenshot of your comment on my computer takes 2.1 MB, about 218k times the size. Either this is a compute overhead the LLM has to do before it can think about the meaning of the text, or if it's a E2E feedforward architecture, less thinking about it. This is simple for us because neurons in the retina pre-process its stream so that less than 0.8 % is sent to the visual cortex and because we have evolved to very efficiently and quickly extract meaning from our vision. This is a prime example of the Moravec's paradox.
jlpom··on D-Day, as told by paratroopers
The Netflix adaptation is terrible
jlpom··on Stop Using Discord
No, I think it's the instance
jlpom··on Stop Using Discord
Because of real-timeness (you don't need to refresh a webpage, you can see if someone is typing). I am not aware of a forum software that have this feature (I don't know them well, so I can be mistaken). But most of the time you don't need it.
jlpom··on Llama 3 70B tied with GPT-4 for first place on LMSYS chatbot arena leaderboard
But not when they are not sure the result would be of quality, in the arena which is used for ranking.
jlpom··on r/borrow
Who would loan to someone with this record? More likely money laundering.
jlpom··on Lack of sunlight during the day is worse than electric lighting at night
We have good hints at the reasons : to repair cellular damage caused by reactive oxygen species. Clues pointing in this direction: animals without sleep survive with antixoydants and melatonine evolved as one.
jlpom··on Please ignore the deluge of complete nonsense about Q*
His reasoning is that good guy’s AI will counteract bad guy’s ones or a an AI that has developed his own objective against humanity if that happens, which is I think a reasonable argument.
jlpom··on A startup is pitching a mind-uploading service that is "100 percent fatal"
1. The neurons are simply not firing /exchanging neurotransmitters.

2. That’s not true. They might look they have recovered but passing a standard cognitive test and the artifice will go away. The brain is notoriously bad at healing itself because mammals and especially humans don’t produce new neurons after teenage apart from very restricted areas (SVZ, stratium, which are still controversial btw).

jlpom··on Death by AI – a free Jackbox style party game. AI judges your plans to survive
I said that I benefited from anti-aging cure, but the LLM said that no, the researchers did not listened to me.
jlpom··on Death by AI – a free Jackbox style party game. AI judges your plans to survive
It has been trained on fictions where characters are more likely to survive against all odds, and likely to die when you don't expect it.

Mine is plainly impossible:

Prompt: You forgot how to breathe

Despite X's attempt to breathe, the autonomous and unconscious neural network fails to respond, leaving him unable to restore his breath. As time passes, X's oxygen levels plummet, and his body gradually succumbs to the lack of oxygen. With no alternatives available to regain their ability to breathe, David sadly succumbs to the situation.

I should have said I would lost consciousness before and that the autonomous would have taken over and maybe I would not have died.

jlpom··on Greg Brockman quits OpenAI
- it means you answer more to the person than its argument (ad hominem) - it is uneccessary and 9/10 when used for a disagreement, especially at the beginning of a response, it is meant to be patronizing.
jlpom··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
While we're on conspiracy theories, Elon Musk would have more motives (they seem to not be in good acquaintances nowadays based on their Twitter profiles and he also has a competing LLM (Grok)), such a games of thrones petty revenge from him would be less surprising than from Google. But Ilya convincing the rest of the board seems much more realistic.
jlpom··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
It's possible that he may have defended him enough that the board did no longer entrust him to remain on it.
jlpom··on Citadel CEO Ken Griffin: Remote work makes it easier to fire people
> People are assholes online. Sometimes even trolls. But in real life, they're often just respectful normal people.

I really don’t think this is the case and it really doesn’t match my personal experience. Especially under their true name, people behave as they would talking face to face.
