jljljl··on Jeventus: A Jev Powered Slack Pet
A fun Jev project from our company's Jev Hackday. More details here: https://gc.ai/blog/what-we-learned-building-38-projects-with...
jljljl··on Carice TC2 – A non-digital electric car
The term "zero-emission" has a specific meaning for the DOA, EPA, and CARB specifically referring to the tailpipe and combustion emissions produced when operating the vehicle.

jljljl··on Carice TC2 – A non-digital electric car
What's the issue with the zero emissions rhetoric?
jljljl··on Nearly 600 economists sign letter, defend independence of the Federal Reserve
You probably can't eliminate any sort of political bias, but a single 14 year term puts you pretty much outside of any electoral cycle considerations, which is important for maintaining long term stability in monetary. Making them have to stand for election or make the president happy every 4 years would completely eliminate any ability for the board to focus on the actual technical issues. There's a reason why countries that eliminate CRB independence tend to see hyper inflation

It also isn't a lifetime appointment, and tenures are staggered so the board isn't fixed in place for generation like the Supreme Court

jljljl··on Nearly 600 economists sign letter, defend independence of the Federal Reserve
Fed governors are subject to democratic accountability (nomination by the president and confirmation by the Senate), but their term is 14 years instead of 4. The Chairman is subject to the same accountability, but on a 4 year term.

There are good reasons why the board of governors is designed to turn over slowly -- it keeps the board focused on long term performance of monetary policy instead of focusing on the next election.

jljljl··on Apple Finally Destroyed Steve Jobs’ Vision of the iPad. Good
The ability to switch modes is going to be important. I'm on the latest iPadOS beta, and when I'm using it to do work across multiple apps the new macOS like window management is amazing. When I'm just trying to read a book, watch a movie, or do some other focused activity, it's mostly annoying.
jljljl··on Meta appoints anti-LGBTQ+ conspiracy theorist Robby Starbuck as AI bias advisor
Is this avoiding politics at work?
jljljl··on Journaling using Nix, Vim and coreutils
Bundling a little script into your path like that is pretty cool, just overkill to use a flake + nix for _just_ that
jljljl··on All-In on Omarchy at 37signals
Does that affect developer productivity at 37signals though?
jljljl··on Journaling using Nix, Vim and coreutils
I was somewhat expecting that the flake would include nvim bundled with the vimrc in the folder.

You could then just open nvim in the `nix develop` environment (or even use something like direnv to activate it when you cd in) and have a minimal journaling environment

jljljl··on That viral video of a 'deactivated' Tesla Cybertruck is a fake
I think it is troubling to say “the lie has value”, but it is worth thinking why certain stories and hoaxes resonate. It’s similar to how sci-fi and horror can reflect the anxieties of their contemporary society
jljljl··on Kodak says it might have to cease operations [updated]
From the article it sounds like they had strong market share in Digital Cameras in the early 2000’s. What really killed then was phones becoming the dominant form factor
jljljl··on Private sector lost 33k jobs, badly missing expectations of 100k increase
This metric of underemployment is captured in U-5 and U-6 in the BLS statistics.

It's less common to report, but in the aftermath of the financial crisis I remember hearing more about it. You can construct a chart in FRED that covers it:

https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=1JWGw

jljljl··on IRS Direct File
Direct File was rolled out gradually as a pilot program. It was also only available for taxpayers in 12 states.

My guess: since the tax code is so complicated, they probably wanted to support the simplest and most common filing cases in the first release. Handling all the edge cases would delay the launch, and prevent them from collecting feedback. If the feedback and demand was positive for v1, they could expand the surface area in the future.

Unfortunately, it didn't last long enough

jljljl··on Designing Tools for Scientific Thought
Is there a collection of note taking practices (such as they exist) among the great thinkers/scientists in history? Is there an assessment or study of their notebooks somewhere that distills best practices? Are techniques like ZK or spaced repetition based on those practices or studies? Have they been studied for desirable traits?

The science of notetaking so far seems to have a lot of art and opinion, but little science

jljljl··on RFK Jr. to require placebo-controlled studies for new vaccines
Yeah that makes sense. If there was an update of MMR, and there was a 50/50 chance that your child does not actually get vaccinated against MMR, you’d refuse to participate in the trial.
jljljl··on RFK Jr. to require placebo-controlled studies for new vaccines
I guess the danger here is that for vaccines that we already know reduce the risk of deadly diseases, you’d either:

Randomly expose patients to the risk of contracting a known debilitating/deadly disease

Or

No one who comes in for the vaccine will consent the trial

jljljl··on RFK Jr. to require placebo-controlled studies for new vaccines
What would be the benefit of a placebo study vs studying the differences between vaccinated and unvaccinated populations?

Is the hypothesis that there is some kind of psychosomatic/placebo effect to vaccines, where just the process of getting injected changes outcomes? I find that hard to believe.

jljljl··on „Fluoride reduces IQ" report needs to be retracted
In the latest report I can find (admittedly ~10 years old), Hawaii has some of the worst oral health and highest rates of tooth decay in the nation:

https://www.civilbeat.org/2020/02/why-hawaii-continues-to-ke...

jljljl··on The Demoralization is just Beginning
Proposal number 2 will destroy the US economy, completely destabilize prices, and make recovering from recessions painful and slow. There is a reason that no country today, including the ones that produce things, use the gold standard.
jljljl··on Improved evaluation times with pre-resolved Nix store paths
This is cool! We do something similar in Devbox where we pre-evaluate store paths from the Nix repository, and then fetch the packages directly from the official Nix cache. This greatly reduces the evaluation time.

Here's a blog post we wrote on the topic:

https://www.jetify.com/blog/how-we-sped-up-nix-package-insta...

jljljl··on Unconditional Cash Study: first findings available
It's interesting that the last 2 years of this study happened during a period of increasing inflation and rising interest rates. I wonder how that affected some of the metrics and qualitative surveys from the participants
jljljl··on Automate Project Environments with Devbox and Direnv (2023)
With direnv you can activate your shell automatically by changing your directory. This is pretty useful if you have multiple projects using devbox, or a monorepo type setup with a few devbox.json files in your subfolders
jljljl··on Apple unveils 'Passwords' manager app at WWDC 2024
I want to use this, but this post gave me pause:

https://x.com/blader/status/1800263787746066646

"apple sherlocked 1Password today, so i'd like to remind you that your Apple ID is only as secure as your carrier.

if you have 2FA on and get SIM swapped, attackers can lock you out of it PERMANENTLY.

last month it happened to me. make sure it doesn't happen to you: "

Getting locked out of all my passwords would be pretty disastrous. Did Apple announce a change to the account lockout procedure as well?

jljljl··on Nix fork Aux.computer fixes the political but not the technological objections
I think this is a good point -- The ideal state is probably something that is immutable where you need it, and mutable where you may need to make frequent changes. Making small tweaks to your configuration should be easier than needing to write and re-evaluate Nix expressions.

We took a similar approach with our product (Devbox): Immutable package store (powered by Nix) to guarantee correctness, coupled with mutable project state. Here's a post where we explain our thinking: https://www.jetify.com/blog/do-repeat-yourself-global-packag...

jljljl··on Show HN: Flox 1.0 – Open-source dev env as code with Nix
You don't need to choose :). You can use Devcontainers with most of the Nix tools, including Devbox. See https://containers.dev/supporting
jljljl··on Show HN: Flox 1.0 – Open-source dev env as code with Nix
Devbox can also run services too. Both products use an awesome process runner called process-compose (https://github.com/f1bonacc1/process-compose/) which is worth checking out (it's even built with nix!)
jljljl··on The failure of self-checkout technology
It always seemed like a huge disconnect that retailers were expanding self checkout and cutting hours, at the same time that they were complaining about higher shrink rates.

While I often prefer self checkout for small purchases, the counter-shrink measures at make the entire experience worse -- locked up products, weird checkpoints after you finish purchasing, etc.

jljljl··on NixOS: Declarative Builds and Deployments
We switched to using Nix at our startup because the rebuild time, reproducibility, and performance of Docker (especially on MacOS) were really slowing us down. Building and starting our dev container could take several minutes if we busted Docker's layer cache, but with Nix we never had to worry about that.

We open sourced our Nix dev environment tool (Devbox), and wrote a bit about why we switched here: https://www.jetpack.io/blog/devbox-turn-a-1000-container-scr...

jljljl··on NixOS: Declarative Builds and Deployments
If you don't want to fully commit to the OS or the Package Manager, you can use Nixpkgs alongside your OS and other package managers by installing Nixpkgs on your Mac or Linux OS.

For the functional language and UX, I agree there's room for improvement. If you don't want to dive into learning Nix, you could use a wrapper that simplifies the UX for creating projects. We built one called Devbox (https://jetpack.io/devbox), which uses JSON for it's config format and has a CLI inspired by more familiar tools like Yarn.
