Immigrant is the English word that denotes someone moving permanently to a new country. Emigrant means someone going to another country permanently. That is to say, moving to Canada from the US one would be considered an immigrant in Canada and an emigrant in the US. An EXPATRIATE(expat for short) is someone working or living in a country not of their origin, and still consider themselves to be whatever nationality they are from. Typically used in the UK or anywhere else that speaks English. Not necessarily meant to be exclusionary of other nationalities.

I agree. I felt he was stretching when trying to discredit golds "value".

There is a reason gold is and has been a "hard" currency.

jlewis7272··on How I learned to code in my 30s
Because switching careers is hard and scary. Some would find it encouraging to read others accomplishments and the paths they took, in order to do the same.

jlewis7272··on Basic Income in a Just Society
When government gets in the way of capitalism you get what you've referred to. Every single one of these issues came about due to government policies or laws.

And Maggie was awesome!

jlewis7272··on Basic Income in a Just Society
I'm a little tired of the basic/universal income trope myself. The problem with Socialism/Communism is you eventually run out of other peoples money.
jlewis7272··on How to Survive as a Solo Dev for Like a Decade or So
When I worked from home I did something similar to what a previous poster has said. I would go to a cafe in the morning and work from there until lunch, I found I needed some humans around me for at least part of my morning to focus. Then after lunch I'd go home and work until 6 or so then go to the gym. Just doing this, the feeling of coming home from the gym, allowed me to have that mental space from work and home time.
jlewis7272··on Tech companies should create ‘farm teams’ to close the talent deficit
Bingo! This falsehood needs to be quashed. There are too many stories of companies using this as an excuse to rid themselves of having to pay for the pensions of their current workforce. Just look at say Disney bringing in foreign workers under the h1b visa program (meaning they can't find qualified devs) and then turn around and have the existing dev employees train them before being let go, as an example.

I switched careers at age 30 also (into programming). A buddy told me something that has held out to be true. Think of your career like you would guiding a canoe down a river. Parts of the river will bend and get narrow and parts will be wider and easier to navigate. Try to stick to the parts that are wider and easier to navigate and you'll be just fine. It's ok to add another line to your resume to allow you to get your foot in the door. After that it's up to you. Build up your own experience and that will shine through every time.
jlewis7272··on How the Government Ruined US Healthcare – And What Can Be Done
I feel this is a problem the government created so the government could come up with never ending "solutions".

The issue needs to be defined better. The point of health insurance is to prevent me from going bankrupt due to a catastrophic illness.

Instead of socialized health care we needed insurance reform and for the collusion between health providers and health insurers to end.

No other industry allows this sort of collusion to occur. My doctor and my insurance company should not be talking to each other.

A good resource that is still in use today by many urban planners is a book called "The Death and Life of Great American Cities" by Jane Jacobs. She explores among other things the growth, decline and renewal of urban centers. Even though this was written in the 60's most of her ideas are still considered when city urban planners make decisions.

Yes! This! Same with dealing with racists, call it out when you see it. And stand up with those who are brave enough to act on it.

I think the fact that we don't look at our solar system as a whole instead of trying to isolate data to "prove we are doing this" is indicative of politics corrupting science. We need to get back to pure science and forget about trying to force this country or that country to do something, namely force it's citizens to pay a tax that fixes nothing. http://www.space.news/2015-10-06-entire-solar-system-is-heat...
