jlengrand··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Le Comte de MonteChristo, an African history of Africa and Hold me tight
jlengrand··on Ask HN: What do you use to host side projects?
Hetzner + Coolify. Pretty fun, while low maintenance and great UX.
jlengrand··on Ask HN: Why do corporate failures always seem to punish the wrong people?
Just to add another item to the list others have brought up :

Goal displacement -> Goal displacement occurs when an organization or individual shifts focus from original objectives to secondary goals, often prioritizing procedures, metrics, or internal processes over intended outcomes.

In large corps, people who are good at staying in a company, and people who are good at serving the company's objectives are typically two different skillsets. And one of those skillset helps you stay inside the company more than the other.

jlengrand··on Substack writers, you need a website
oh I can tell you that lately, hundreds of bots are very much visiting my website every day in volumes that I have never seen in the past... Unsure that's a good news though
jlengrand··on Ask HN: How do you figure out what you're passionate about?
Something that helped me in the past, at a period where I was lost; is to take a notebook and write every night what part of the day actually gave you energy. Can be a sub-part of work, or something outside of work, whatever.

What helped me is that there is usually a difference between what you are naturally good at, which is what you will tend to gravitate towards because you get results, vs what actually gives you energy. Over time, you can see trend and find a sport where both are true at the same time.

Oh, and also internalize that fact that those things may change over time as you grow as a person :)

jlengrand··on Ask HN: Is it just me, or is software buggier across the board?
I do definitely feel this 100% on all the larger companies claiming huge AI gains. Spotify, Microsoft, Google, ... Steady decline in quality, more and more sluggishness, random strange bugs showing.

I do believe we'll go the other way again, but unsure how soon.

Shipping faster is great, it just feels like quality has been lower on the priority the past few years.

jlengrand··on Road to Elm 1.0
This, 200 times. No weekly news does not mean dead. In some specific places like this one, it means stable. (And also arguably, for good or bad reasons, why it will never become mainstream).
jlengrand··on Show HN: My 13-year-old built an ant colony tracker
As a 40 year old who has had colonies since he's your kiddo's age, please thank him for me! I've created an account :).
jlengrand··on Apple raises prices of MacBooks, iPads
And in a few years, all the manufacturers will be wondering why those customers don't consume as much any more.
jlengrand··on Blogging can just be stating the obvious
I never imagined my blogs to be useful to anyone. For me, they're mostly just things I felt like sharing but with no particular audience in mind. Over the years though, I find myself receiving email from people who I helped. I even googled quite a few things in the past years only to find the first answer to be a blog of mine. So I unblocked myself a few times.

Blogging is fun. What's obvious for you isn't for everyone.

jlengrand··on Ask HN: What tools are you using for AI-assisted code review?
Surprised to not see it mentioned yet, I've been using Kilo and I'm pretty happy about it. Local development with Claude, review using Kilo : https://kilo.ai/docs/automate/code-reviews/github.
jlengrand··on Is Meta destroying its engineering organization?
Your obsession about teenage girls is worrying

EDIT: my bad, I read you wrong and didn't realize you didn't bring up the whole tenage girl thing. Sorry for that.

jlengrand··on Is Meta destroying its engineering organization?
In case you care, what you're doing is called causal impotence https://philpapers.org/rec/NORTIO-18. Then you can also search why it does matter.
jlengrand··on Running local models is good now
Just wanna say it's always fun and nostalgic to see authors pass by here who I was reading back when I started my career. I was reading Vicki's blogs way back, even remember learning some email parsing in python from her over 10 years ago. TY!
jlengrand··on Vibe coding my way to a healthy family: Introducing Gamow Labs
"the thing HN is interested in". Really though?

We're talking about a deep human experience here. I don't know about HN as a whole but I personally come out of this much more touched about the human side of the story and how someone's life events can tremendously change their paths and goals than the LLM itself.

jlengrand··on Ask HN: Why won't you be replaced by AI?
Depends a lot on how expensive they are to run
jlengrand··on Recruiters, How do you vet resume in 2026?
Honestly I think we're on our way back to good old networking. Realized that myself after trying to hire and receiving hundreds of automated applications in minutes, all seemingly tailored with a cover letter.
jlengrand··on What we lost when we stopped letting kids leave the front yard
Moved house earlier this year, from an apartment in a not so safe area to a house in a family area with no cars and more green. The kiddos have been out so much more, and it's awesome to see how they find phones / screens less interesting when they can just go and play outside.
jlengrand··on Googlebook
I will never buy Google hardware again. You can keep it
jlengrand··on Ask HN: Share your personal website

jlengrand··on Claude Code On-the-Go
Hum, I already have a phone with Slack / Email on. And it's only switched on during work hours. No messaging outside of that window. Why would that be different?
jlengrand··on How we lost communication to entertainment
Ploum is one of the people getting me into blogging 12 or so years ago. I'm so glad to see it popup again here, it's like a big piece of nostalgia. And the piece is current. Thanks Ploum!
jlengrand··on Making Google Sans Flex
I never come to complain about websites, but clicking on this thing made my chrome freeze for a whole second on my MBP. What has Google become xD
jlengrand··on I got hacked: My Hetzner server started mining Monero
TY for the article. You made me look into my server, and also found some strange activity on my docker containers. Good call!
jlengrand··on Ask HN: Any online tech spaces you hang around that don't involve AI?
Better, but the very first link I'm given is "Coursera to Combine with Udemy to Empower the Global Workforce with Skills for the AI Era" ^^
jlengrand··on Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros
Those acquisition numbers will just keep becoming larger and larger until one day, when I'm old enough, someone will just acquire the only other player left in the field and Earth will be one single megacorporation.
jlengrand··on Netflix kills casting from its mobile app to most modern TVs
Just give it time
jlengrand··on Netflix kills casting from its mobile app to most modern TVs
Between this, the ads on paid plans, and the fragmentation of catalogues, we've come full circle.
jlengrand··on Netflix kills casting from its mobile app to most modern TVs
excerpt 33 of why those platforms will end up dying, and everyone will go back to the old ways. Greed is such a powerful enshittification factor
