jkonline··on New Defcon Badges Pack a Unique Open-Source Chip That Doubles as a Security Key
Nope! From the article: "The chip—called the Baochip-1x..."
jkonline··on Why I Stopped Arguing with People
"We like to believe humans are rational animals who occasionally feel emotions. It’s the reverse. We are emotional animals who occasionally think."

Well said.

jkonline··on Your Website Is Not for You
"A website isn't art. It's a tool with one job: get the user to do the thing they came for." Great quote! This has already helped me frame a conversation with a client.
jkonline··on 5x5 Pixel font for tiny screens
Suggest you check your .htaccess (or however you secure your server) for storage.j0.hn.
jkonline··on Colossus, the first large-scale electronic computer
Interesting; I have always thought ENIAC was "first."
jkonline··on Students invent quieter leaf blower
First, it's an attachment that could fit on nearly all blowers.

Second, it dampens the noise while retaining all the force.

If this works out, it will be amazing! Kudos to the student teams!

jkonline··on SF Poop Map
Just to read the article, I have to have an ArcGis Online account?

That's not an article.

jkonline··on After shooting, MSU promised safety. It delivered surveillance
War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.

jkonline··on Show HN: QBasic 4.5 on Android
Yeah, but... Can it gorillas.bas?
jkonline··on Volute Shaped Blower [video]
This is quite interesting.
jkonline··on Websites of 2000 [video]
Filming TV segments about internet websites?

What's next, watching TV on the Internet? Heh

jkonline··on Drying Fruits (2003)
We've been looking for additional uses for our new air fryer, including drying fruit.

This is super helpful and interesting. Thank you!

jkonline··on Show HN: I built an autopilot for the lunar lander game
"Oh SNAP! I'm amazing at this!" 101.1 point landing on my second try!

At least, that's what I thought, until I realized I had previously activated the auto-pilot. Best #footgun today (so far!).

So I guess I should say: > Oh SNAP! This auto-pilot is amazing at this!

Thanks!

jkonline··on Firefox Android now supports Tampermonkey
The Mozilla blog recently covered some of this IIRC: https://blog.mozilla.org/en/products/firefox/extensions-addo...
jkonline··on The Mistress of Slang
This is a beautiful article, thank you.
jkonline··on Blackchain Security
Looks like a typo in the title: it should be blockchain
jkonline··on Doors of McMurdo
I think distcalculator is buggy:

"Distance between New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA is 99 miles.

If average speed of your car will be standard for this route between New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA and road conditions will be as usual, time that you will need to arrive to Los Angeles, CA will be 1 hour."

jkonline··on Website Fidelity
@john-doe Thank you, especially for the links. These remind me of the 'before times' when most sites had a special "mobile" version.

The web browsers at work have increasingly moved away from allowing users to control extensions and plug-ins (natch), and ad-mitigating bookmarklets are only so effective.

jkonline··on Klarna – Company announcement from CEO regarding layoffs
I agree, I thought the letter was fine. Classy, even.

I don't see a need to have more specific language in the all-employee announcement email.

The right place for that language is in the message(s) specifically to the person's being fired. And, to their credit, they let people know ahead of time what the exact subject of that message will be.

jkonline··on IP over Avian Carriers RFC 1149 event (2001)
Interesting, many thanks. Currently enjoying the fall down the Golay code rabbit hole.

jkonline··on IP over Avian Carriers RFC 1149 event (2001)
I have proudly used RFC 1149s and 2549 many times over the years, (as straight faced as possible) as learning aids for INFOSEC and Help desk n00bs. Being able to introduce intentionally humorous material (that is documented within a scientific document process) has been a huge help.
jkonline··on How to Learn Nix
I think you've identified one of the author's many not-so-subtle (but still somehow obscure) themes.

Next I want to write, "For me, I enjoyed it," but I hesitated initially, because I'm surprised that I'm not more annoyed.

jkonline··on Project Oberon
I find it hard to cpnclude how "useful and usable in a production environment" an OS project can be, when the project website still isn't using SSL/ HTTPS.
jkonline··on Chatbots: Still dumb after all these years
Wait, I still don't know:

"Is it safe to walk downstairs backwards if I close my eyes?"

Granted, I'm more biased here than most, I suppose. I emergently received 10 screws and 2 plates to repair my broken ankle, after falling down my home stairs last year. I wasn't walking backwards, nor were my eyes closed.

jkonline··on Protected: December Post
Protection. And, perhaps, shameless plugging?
jkonline··on Is watching the 1984 Ghostbusters movie killing people?
This morning, I heard about the OP's article on the podcast "More or Less." Hats off to OP, and shame on me for getting caught in the trollnet. :D

. .

BTW, More or Less is a great data science / stats podcast! https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qshd

jkonline··on Is watching the 1984 Ghostbusters movie killing people?
<soapbox>

> I don't know how to explain this other than movie-caused mortality.

The above sentence alone gets my Skepticism antennae whirling, let alone the majority of the (relatively unassociated) facts.

What the heck is movie-caused mortality?

An exact search[0^] returns this same HN post, no help there.

An inexact search[1^] returns results mainly about deaths that occurred during the filming of a movie or TV show. These deaths are very much not the point the OP is trying to make.

Issue #1): the sentence quoted above is non-sensical, as the OP's purported method for "how to explain this," doesn't explain anything, let alone anything related to the point OP is trying to make.

Issue #2): Even if "movie-caused mortality" was a valid explanation... Not knowing how to explain something doesn't allow one to arrive at any conclusion (other than, "the thing can not be explained," pedantically speaking).

Frankly, it makes as much (as little!) sense as, "I don't know how to explain this other than time-traveling telepathic murder bots."

jkonline··on Ask HN: How to setup meaningful 2FA in 2021
Hoping for some good thoughts on this topic!

I can't contribute (much), as I don't have this figured out yet either. My moderate amount of research has me leaning toward BitWarden.

jkonline··on Submarine cable map rendered onto a globe
I've always enjoyed Hurricane Electric's 3D network map [1^], it includes a submarine cable filter view which always [2^] blows my mind.

[1]: https://he.net/3d-map/

[2]: of course, today the desktop I'm using doesn't support WebGL and I can't see the submarine filter on my phone. YMMV
