jkeuhlen··on Federal appeals court finds geofence warrants “categorically” unconstitutional
This isn't true, nor is it how the US courts work. Prosecutors have to prove that their evidence is admissible and it can definitely be challenged easily by the defence. The police need to prove probable cause to enter in cases like this.
jkeuhlen··on Federal appeals court finds geofence warrants “categorically” unconstitutional
Intent is the key to the good faith exception here.

If you intend to kick down a door to find evidence of wrongdoing, anything you find is inadmissible. But if you kick down a door because someone on the other side is screaming for help, evidence of other wrongdoing that you find is admissible still.

Here, they are saying that they had good reason to believe they could operate in the way that they did, so while the geofence evidence itself isn't able to be used, other evidence derived from that work is still usable. But going forwards, no one can use the geofence technique in good faith.

It's crazy to me how much of large business revenue comes from ads. Just under one third of their revenue is from advertising!

Is this a recent shift, or one that I'm just now noticing? Other large tech companies have had substantial increases in ad revenue as well: notably amazon and uber. Is advertising shifting away from Google, or is this just a normal part of large businesses (like paying for placement in retail stores)?

If you haven't seen it, we (Mercury) are also offering debt financing these days, starting with VC-backed companies: https://mercury.com/venture-debt
jkeuhlen··on Why am I no longer qualified to be a Brex customer?
Our unit economics are strong for all businesses, so we don't anticipate ever having to do something like this.

Banking is our primary focus, not an add-on feature, and we invest significantly on the product teams that enable strong unit economics in banking for the long run, like partner integrations, support experience, and onboarding/risk.

Hey abofh! I lead the engineering team responsible for payments at Mercury. We're definitely looking at adding better and faster payment rails in the future, but I think that your scheduled ACHs should go out in the first ACH window right now. It's possible that your receiving bank isn't posting them until later in the day, but we send those first thing in the morning when pre-scheduled. If you want to email me, I'm happy to double check that for you. jake at mercury dot com

My company is hiring frontend engineers (React/Typescript stack), but we do have a technical coding interview. What exactly do you mean by "coding exams"? We have a ~2 hour, synchronous technical challenge that all of our engineers go through (as well as screening questions before that point). No leetcode style problems, no take-home tests though.
jkeuhlen··on About that time I had an outburst during the Y Combinator Interview
I've thought about this problem a lot too. In my mind, there is no "Adult rec league for eSports" that exists right now. I can go to my local rec center and sign up for adult soccer, football, volleyball to meet people and play for fun in a lightly competitive environment, but no one has done that for eSports yet.

I like the idea of booting up old games in that format as well.

It's definitely a hard problem, but with the increase in recreation time, especially for creative workers, that we're continuing to see I think it could be a big company.

I noticed that you all have a similar feature integrating with truework.

How does that work in comparison?

jkeuhlen··on Ask HN: What RSS Reader do you use?
For what it's worth, reddit's RSS feeds are pretty broken in my experience. It's highly likely they had to write some custom code for that as well.

The federal government does not have the jurisdiction to change how people vote in elections. That is determined by the states.
jkeuhlen··on Ask HN: I'm building budgeting app. What features would you look for?
Basically every major budgeting app I've looked at doesn't allow rolling buckets of money. For example, my wife and I budget $X per month for travel, but we only travel once or twice a year. What I'd really like to be able to do is allocate some amount every month to certain activities and have my budget keep track of how much I've saved for that purpose.

On the other side, sometimes it's hard for us to reconcile our food budget between months. If we have a big grocery trip on the last day of the month, we kind of expect to spend less the next month but won't always remember that when we go reconcile our budget.

jkeuhlen··on The Webpage, an online RSS reader and news aggregator, styled like a newspaper
This looks really interesting! I've been building an RSS reader for myself in my free time, and this will be really useful. I was wondering if you know anything about the legal implications around scraping full-content like this and packaging it up? I was planning to do it with some fun added-on features, but was worried it would be considered copy-right infringement (since I would basically be re-hosting other site's content without permission). And some websites outright ban this kind of usage in the TOS for their RSS feeds. For example, from the Washington Post[1]

> a. For any article, you may not display more text than we provide in the RSS feed.

Just curious, without any other information presented at all, you just buy up people's side projects? How does this work?
jkeuhlen··on Show HN: Profit Hunt - Get inspired by profitable online projects
I'm at a stage where I have a side project that works well for me. I'd like to open it up and allow other people to start using it, but I'm not really sure how to take it from fun project to side business. Do I need to hire a lawyer to draft a Privacy Policy and ToS? Do I need to incorporate an actual business in order to open an account with stripe to accept payments? Anyone have resources on the legal/operational part of this process?

jkeuhlen··on Why Child Care Is So Expensive
Most of those families with multiple kids don't have 5 infants, but rather ages of the children are spread out. The ratio GP is talking about is, I believe, a limit so that infants are not neglected due to lack of time on the caretakers part. Infants do need lots of care and attention specifically during early development.

jkeuhlen··on Ask HN: Dell XPS 13/15 best developer laptop? Preparing for Black Friday
> it works perfectly out of the box.

Did you install a specific version of Ubuntu or something? I have a recent XPS 15 that I installed 18.04 on, and I have had a fair number of problems. My USB-C hub (from Dell as well) doesn't work properly for USB pass through. My bluetooth headphones require me to connect, disconnect, and reconnect every single time to work properly. My wifi drivers will randomly disappear from time to time. And I have a scattering of other random issues with it.

Most of these feel like "minor" problems, as I can still work productively with my setup. But I definitely couldn't describe my experience as smooth.

My intuition is that the elected officials are wary of choosing positions blatantly opposite of the interests the lobbyists are pushing for since the lobbyists could easily support a different candidate and put a lot of money into supporting them. So if you don't behave in the way the powerful lobbyists want, they'll get you kicked out of office.
