jkap··on Cohost to shut down at end of 2024
we were not. all of us made exactly the same amount, and it was well under market rate
jkap··on Cohost to shut down at end of 2024
salary for four employees working well under market rate
jkap··on Privacy Nightmare on Wheels’: Every Car Brand Reviewed by Mozilla
I drive a top trim 2021 Mazda 6 and as far as I can tell it doesn't even have any sort of bidirectional data transmission outside of the standard Sirius XM traffic/weather/whatever systems. The internal GPS doesn't even work right since i declined to buy the $400 map pack (carplay is more than good enough for me). I haven't read any privacy policies yet, but my hunch is that there's nothing that bad in them, especially since I'm not even sure how they'd get the data off beyond a dealer service.
jkap··on Elevator Sabbath service mode (SHO)
as a jew, this is simply the nature of judaism
jkap··on Launch HN: Xkit (YC S18) – OAuth infrastructure as a service
Xkit is still actively maintained, albeit by a new team [1]. When I saw this, my first thought was "since when was Xkit a YC company," so definitely an unfortunate name collision.

jkap··on Amazon Dash Button
It's being reported on as if it's not a joke, so I'm now assuming it isn't: http://www.theverge.com/2015/3/31/8316775/amazon-dash-button...
jkap··on Apple Built A SIM Card That Lets You Switch Between AT&T, Sprint, And T-Mobile
LTE uses SIM cards regardless of the network's voice system.
jkap··on Futilitris
This game is from 2011.
jkap··on Tesla Adds Titanium Underbody Shield and Aluminum Deflector Plates to Model S
The suspension in the Model S is computer controlled, so they just push an update to control it differently!
jkap··on Review: Google Nexus 4 Android Smartphone by LG
I'm currently on a $30 T-Mobile Mothly4G plan on a Galaxy Nexus. The catch is that, in my area, T-Mobile's service isn't quite as good as Verizon's, who I was previously with.

And that's it. That is literally the only complaint I've had and, for $30 a month, I'm willing to live with that.

jkap··on Will Rails be the new PHP

jkap··on The Nifty MiniDrive - SD slot hack for the Macbook
This would be really neat if the sd slot on my macbook even worked. Has anyone else had this problem?
jkap··on How Long Before VPNs Become Illegal?
It seems unlikely that VPNs will ever become completely illegal, at least not in the US. Too many very large companies use them for Congress to consider it. They may make them illegal for non-corporate uses, but that would be difficult to enforce and overall useless.
jkap··on Hacker News clone for CouchDB
I believe reddit's gives newer posts more points, rather than taking away points from older posts.

I might be wrong, though. It's been a while since I've looked at that part of the code.

jkap··on Apple to drop Google Maps in iOS 6 for in-house Maps?
No, it's shitty journalism in action.
jkap··on Reaching the Limits of Adobe Stupidity
This may be somewhat irrelevant, but what is the motivation for having a case-sensitive HFS volume? I agree that Adobe should support it (and separate volume installation) because these are edge cases that should be accounted for, but I've never heard the reasoning for having a case-sensitive format.
jkap··on Blood Tests Can Accurately Diagnose Depression
"Depressed people are found to be more rational than the people who feel successful."

You know how I can tell you don't have depression?

jkap··on Show HN: We made an addictive way to browse pictures on reddit
I was trying to make a joke about the addictiveness of reddit, but I agree, several of the subreddits are just complete bigoted shit. I've taken to just unsubscribing from them rather than getting angry everytime a post comes up.
jkap··on Show HN: We made an addictive way to browse pictures on reddit
You mean other than just using reddit?
jkap··on Zynga Files for $1B IPO
Except that Zynga actually makes profit.
jkap··on Show HN: Entire concerts algorithmically "reconstructed" from YouTube videos
I had the idea to do this (albeit, manually) a while ago, syncing the audio from Justice's "A Cross The Universe" with Youtube video of the concert it came from. Really cool to see it done, though!
jkap··on Amazon in talks with HP to buy Palm
It's still very clear what you're getting with each Kindle product.

Kindle DX has a massive screen, Kindle Keyboard has a keyboard, Kindle Touch has a touch screen, Kindle has buttons, Kindle Fire is a tablet.

And then there's the 3G and Wi-Fi splits, but that's also an obvious feature.

jkap··on Rate my App: Tea for iPhone--getting quantitative about tea
Aren't you Aaron's brother? I remember him showing me this a couple months ago.

It's a really nice looking app, both aesthetically and functionally. If I drank tea I'm sure I'd use it.

jkap··on Show HN: My imageless one page website, thanks to CSS3
When you said it was imageless, I assumed that you meant you base64'd everything into one CSS file to avoid multiple requests.

I think that would look a lot better, and it can degrade well for IE7 and under.

jkap··on How html5-boilerplate helped drastically improving our website performance
I noticed that as well. After looking at the waterfall chart [1], it looks like Facebook is screwing up the numbers, not anything they can control.

jkap··on Using an oscilloscope as a Gameboy display
This is probably one of the coolest hacks I have ever seen.

Practical? Hell no. Awesome? Hell yes.

jkap··on Ask HN: Soon to be high school graduate with two full time job offers. Help?
That's what I've been seeing a lot too. Almost everyone recommending college over the jobs are life, not potential career benefits.

I'm American as well, btw.

jkap··on Russian peasant multiplication
I used this a lot while writing a 16bit math system for the NES. A similar trick to this is Egyptian Division (http://everything2.com/title/Egyptian+division)
jkap··on How did you find your first programming job?
Complete luck. I managed to get an internship doing programming work with a local design firm simply because I knew iOS development and they wanted someone who did.

If I were you, I'd try contacting companies that are doing things to want to do and sending them your resume. Persistence is key.
