Hey Joe, what do you know?

jjoe··on Show HN: My Trick for Securing Websites Without a DB
Neat, but this (/etc/ssl/ca/certs/users/) is a "DB" in its loose meaning :)

Cheers

jjoe··on Hitch: Scalable TLS termination proxy
The reason I think Varnish needs a native TLS implementation is to be able to talk directly to TLS backends. Otherwise you have a gaping hole in your stack should one need Varnish to communicate over the Internet.
jjoe··on Hitch: Scalable TLS termination proxy
Varnish needs its "own" native TLS termination badly. I'm not sure if an external proxy like Hitch will successfully fill the gap. I understand phk's stance on Varnish doing ssl but with this announcement, it's clear pressure's mounting.
jjoe··on How Much Does a Cremation Cost? Depends Who You Call
But the resulting ash isn't biodegradable. Cemetery land can be reused after full decomposition and after enough time has passed.
jjoe··on How Much Does a Cremation Cost? Depends Who You Call
I understand that the choice/decision to cremate the self is personal. But I think it stops where the personal starts affecting us all. Is cremation that negligible of an issue for the environment?
jjoe··on Show HN: Bayaa – Bookkeeping and Taxes for Startups by Pro CPAs
A Show HN showcases your own project not others' (like a vendor). It's likely to be more visible that way too.
jjoe··on Ask HN: You're building an app in 2016 – How would you let users login?
I think we're back to email/pass as a preference. Because folks are so wary of apps requesting permission to their social accounts or people no longer using said social network. There's definitely social fatigue in the air.
jjoe··on How Elon Musk Stole My Car
Had this been "Elon took my car and told his company to give me a heavily discounted one in exchange" then presumably this article would have been filled with praise for their customer service. What a missed opportunity.

Were it the case, we'd have never heard anything from this customer. Happy customers rarely make the news.

jjoe··on Jewish problems (2011)
While we're discussing this subject, and hoping to shine a bright light away from all the negativity, the solidarity of the Jewish people is amazing and unequalled! Jews seem to show great compassion and provide unconditional help for their own.

There's wisdom to be gleaned from this I'm sure...

jjoe··on Tech faces hour of reckoning as fundraising drops, layoffs rise
Most startups have already priced this fundraising-drought in their previous fundraisers. Instead of raising exactly what they needed, they over-raised by double or tripple that. It's selfish in some way as it likely contributed to the negative sentiment and the high valuations.

I think this won't be an acute bubble for incumbents but for early stage startups that need funds badly to keep the short runway clear.

jjoe··on Show HN: Kloudsec, Our Bootstrapped Anycast CDN with LetsEncrypt for Your Site
Hi

I'm curious, how are you solving the issues inherent in multitenant CDNs like yours (e.g. performance).

Cheers

jjoe··on The Founder’s Battle for Mental Health
It's perfectly normal for folks who are motivated, driven to succeed, and who work hard, to burden the stress and strains along the way. But there's wisdom in understanding one's own limits. It's a balancing act. A psychatrist and a blue pill aren't the fix here.
jjoe··on In the Works – AWS Region in Canada
It's great AWS is expanding. Here's to hoping they fix the dire reliability issues they've been facing every now and then. I looked really hard at using AWS for ELB and other services but GCP won me over because they solved the ELB and scalability pre-warm up issue(s).
jjoe··on Show HN: Get help with your tasks intsantly
As wingerlang pointed out, you'd be missing out on business from folks who live in countries you currently support but are travelling abroad and need to post a task from said unsupported country. It should be a simple tweak to your workflow to accommodate this.

Good luck

jjoe··on Show HN: Get help with your tasks intsantly
I'm on a short trip abroad right now. And because your website checks my IP and geolocates it outside of your service area, I can't use your service nor even check what you guys do in the first place.
jjoe··on “Corn-Pone Opinions” by Mark Twain (1901)
Thanks, I over-analyzed again and I'm way off w.r.t PG!
jjoe··on Ask HN: Agencies, how do you host multiple client websites?
We host several agencies' clients' websites. The majority host their clients' websites across several managed servers (VPS or dedi). They opt for managed servers because they don't want to deal with upgrades, patching, or day to day server work. It frees up their time substantially (dev work is time consuming too).

But the choice between VPS and dedi depends on several factors (traffic, requirements, compliance, projections, etc). I always recommend starting small unless the business whose website being hosted is already established.

As far as the hosting platform is concerned, you should always seek to leverage a control panel. This is one of those things you wish you had only after you're stuck without one (we support panel-free servers too). Your clients don't need to contact you for every little change they need to make.

jjoe··on Ask HN: How did the YC Fellowships worked for anyone involved?
YC founders are generally advised not to discuss/announce their acceptance into the program. That they're better off annoucing it through the press for the biggest effect/impact possible.

It makes sense that you don't hear much from them here on HN.

jjoe··on Show HN: I spent 6 years making a cool free game
I run a web hosting business and have servers to spare. Email me and I'll get you one for as long as you need it (see profile for email address).
jjoe··on Show HN: Looking for your insight!
Are the popups part of the demo only or there when you create an account? My scrolling was interrupted ad infinitum and repetitively. I ended up closing the tab. Maybe show an option to mute them?
jjoe··on Show HN: Phoenix – a lightweight OS X window manager scriptable with JavaScript
You should definitely add some screen shots. Good luck!
jjoe··on Ask HN: Resources to build VMs for an Opensource project
Hi peedy

I can provision a dedicated server (baremetal) if you can't find what you need elsewhere. You don't have to pay. Email me at joeh whereDomain is unixy.net if you're interested.

Cheers

jjoe··on Ask HN: How to (instantly) search by filename in Linux?
This is probably over the top. But why not mirror those file names in /dev/shm/ (memory) and search against that instead? Ex:

# create dir structure

find /media -type d -exec mkdir -p /dev/shm/{} \;

# create file structure

find /media -type f -exec touch /dev/shm/{} \;

Then search /dev/shm/ for your files.

jjoe··on Ask HN: Why are there so few Show HN threads on homepage these days?
I'm not against what you're saying w.r.t it being a place to show code and interesting not-for-profit projects, but we can't force Show HN to be that and only that. Forcing an open-source only culture on Show HN is no better than startups/SV forcing a for-profit culture on Show HN. I think we're better off with an open place that's balanced and healthy.
jjoe··on Ask HN: Why are there so few Show HN threads on homepage these days?
Frankly, I'm not sure this answers poster's question. While Show HN submissions are visible and volume is high, quality isn't so much. Maybe this explains why Show HNs don't make it to the front (not worth voting up).

I'm suspecting folks aren't submitting to Show HN anymore. They'd rather someone else submit their project for them once it's out of MVP/beta and matures a bit more. It has a much better chance of being noticed and gaining traction then. I also noticed Show HN volume is much higher a day or two after YC-rejection emails are out.

jjoe··on VLC contributor living in Aleppo writing about the Paris attacks
Although Rwanda is among the most Christian countries in Africa, in the 1994 genocide, church buildings became the primary killing grounds. To explain why so many Christians participated in the violence, this book looks at the history of Christian engagement in Rwanda and then turns to a rich body of original national and local-level research to argue that Rwanda’s churches have consistently allied themselves with the state and played ethnic politics. Comparing two local Presbyterian parishes in Kibuye prior to the genocide demonstrates that progressive forces were seeking to democratize the churches. Just as Hutu politicians used the genocide of Tutsi to assert political power and crush democratic reform, church leaders supported the genocide to secure their own power. The fact that Christianity inspired some Rwandans to oppose the genocide demonstrates that opposition by the churches was possible and might have hindered the violence.

The Rwandan genocide, just like the Paris attacks, must've been carried out by a bunch of nutsos. They both used religion and its tools to promote and support their wicked agenda forward.

jjoe··on VLC contributor living in Aleppo writing about the Paris attacks
What would be fair comparison is a country or region with a large Christian population that's at war or serious unrest. One country that comes to mind is Rwanda in 1994.

jjoe··on WordPress now runs a quarter of the web
It's roughly $90/mo for 1m+ pvs/mo (includes management). With wp-super-cache you're still hitting PHP/MySQL (although not as heavily if you're pulling everything cold).

Whereas with Varnish you're getting hot pages off RAM and on you go.

jjoe··on WordPress now runs a quarter of the web
We have clients running multisite with 150MM+ page views per month but on dedicated hardware and Varnish running in front of it. The latter is a must in a setup like this. You save on MRC for server rentals, which is a huge value proposition.
