jjcon··on Supreme Court rules Andy Warhol’s Prince art is copyright infringement
> The work of dead artists should be in the public domain.

“Murder of popular musicians and artists up 1000% this year… news at 11”

Joking aside, if I am the artist, shouldn’t I be able to give those rights to my children to provide for them after I’m gone? I agree with the spirit of what you’re saying but I think a reasonable threshold after death is appropriate (20 years maybe instead of 70?)

jjcon··on Place mushrooms in sunlight to get your vitamin D (2012)
According to this at least 5k to 50k daily appears to be safe:

Not sure what happens if you eat 10 mushrooms though

jjcon··on Ninth-Century Coins Change Our Understanding of Alfred the Great
Did I read that right? If you find an old coin on your land in England you could go to jail for not reporting it? So not only do you not own it, the crown owns it because it is ‘treasure’ and you can go to jail for not reporting the find? Huh… looking at the linked law they give you 1 day to report the finding or else risk jail time… England takes their treasure seriously I guess.
jjcon··on Arrest made in SF killing of Bob Lee – alleged killer also worked in tech
> a police force which refuses to prevent crimes

That isn’t what the law has determined though. The law has only determined that police can’t be sued or imprisoned for failing to assist. It can be my job to pick up trash, but that doesn’t make it my legal obligation even under threat to my own life.

jjcon··on Arrest made in SF killing of Bob Lee – alleged killer also worked in tech
In what way would precogs have absolutely been required here? This was out in the open in a public place. Ever considered that if there were ample police people wouldn’t be so brazen as to commit murder in public, better yet, police could have potentially prevented it from happening or assisted after the fact. The fact that many SF can’t even imagine another way this could have been prevented is exactly why they can’t fix it… and exactly why people are fleeing. Don’t delude yourself.
jjcon··on Arrest made in SF killing of Bob Lee – alleged killer also worked in tech
More than SF currently has… clearly
jjcon··on Arrest made in SF killing of Bob Lee – alleged killer also worked in tech
You think precogs are required for any level of crime prevention? No wonder people are fleeing SF
jjcon··on Arrest made in SF killing of Bob Lee – alleged killer also worked in tech
Legally obligated to protect != Prevention

Not sure how that is relevant

jjcon··on Arrest made in SF killing of Bob Lee – alleged killer also worked in tech
You can't possibly be serious, right? So what is the point of police patrol? Adjusting police presence in different areas? Community initiatives? Prevention is definitively a key component of modern policing at least in every city and country I have lived in.

If that isn't the case in SF I'd say then that they have obviously failed on all levels at enforcing the law. Not to mention, punishment is definitely not the job of law enforcement.

jjcon··on Warm liquid from Oregon seafloor comes from Cascadia fault
Ah okay I see the distinction, that makes sense. We can give advance warning better than we used to but not predict the actual impetus.
jjcon··on Arrest made in SF killing of Bob Lee – alleged killer also worked in tech
> San Francisco authorities hit back at Elon Musk and others who had used Lee’s killing to criticize law enforcement in the city.

Tagline is kinda weird... isn't murder kinda indicative of a law enforcement failure?

jjcon··on Warm liquid from Oregon seafloor comes from Cascadia fault
Didn't the Japan early warning system work pretty well? I'd say it was an improvement that wouldn't have been possible without increased abilities over the decades.
jjcon··on Blue Sky: Can Twitter be owned by its users?
I’m as annoyed as the next person at those looking to see the new twitter fail, having said that I simultaneously love the idea of new things challenging the status quo. Decentralization is somewhat a core tenant of the hacker ethos so I don’t think it is strange to see that reflected here.
jjcon··on Personal Concierge Using OpenAI's ChatGPT via Telegram and Voice Messages
Maybe it is just my niche use cases but after spending a good few hours with both, 3.5 for me has actually produced more coherent outputs for me which is a little confusing to me. Maybe I need to rethink my prompting or something.
jjcon··on FCC warns Portland church to shut down pirate FM operating under its steeple
How powerful of a transmitter can you operate legally in the USA? How much space does that cover? I know there is some limit cause drive in theaters used to transmit on FM and I believe there even used to be adapters for cars that would transmit a very very short distance.
jjcon··on I’m a doctor: Here’s what I found when I asked ChatGPT to diagnose my patients
Continue to spew misinformation and those are exactly the headlines we'll see more of. You are the one speaking in falsehoods and having your comments flagged and removed by moderators not me. No amount of hand wringing, inflammatory language and Hacker News rule breaking on your part changes the facts here.
jjcon··on I’m a doctor: Here’s what I found when I asked ChatGPT to diagnose my patients
Exactly, due to tons of misinformation about the law like the above - it is causing tons of problems - we don't need to further spread it.
jjcon··on I’m a doctor: Here’s what I found when I asked ChatGPT to diagnose my patients
> because this doctor is not practicing in Texas where such a procedure might get you arrested

https://texas.public.law/statutes/tex._health_and_safety_cod...

Please don't spread misinformation, there is enough confusion out there already. Texas law specifically allows for the removal of ectopic pregnancies.

jjcon··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
California is 48th in the US for veterans per capita so I sorta doubt veterans make up even a few percent of those
jjcon··on Experts warn yearly checkups carry risks and do not reduce mortality
So when the US FDA is shilling for obesity drugs, says that being obese isn’t a lifestyle problem but is purely genetic. Medical schools are lowering/removing certain standards for admission under the guise of ‘equity’ - thats all just some billionaires faults? Sorry, I don’t buy it. The medical and pharmaceutical industries have been rotting for decades in the US and protecting them, “because it would be better for our healthcare system” is exactly the mentality that gets you into this mess to begin with. State the problem, state it clearly. Don’t shift blame around to invisible boogeymen.
jjcon··on Heat pump sales outpaced gas furnace sales in the US in 2022
That is the pipeline... that is not the thing that goes to your house lol. Not to mention that a couple percent doesn't even come close to changing the math given above
jjcon··on The 'Insanely Broad' Restrict Act Could Ban Much More Than Just TikTok
The law is informed by human morality, they both retreated from upholding the law and in my opinion they lose the moral high ground simultaneously. That isn’t conflating, that’s stating what they did legally and then also stating my moral opinion on the matter
jjcon··on The 'Insanely Broad' Restrict Act Could Ban Much More Than Just TikTok
Not even close to accurate. Not at all. Wikimedia has been trying to get China to allow a stripped down version of wikipedia in china for close to a decade now. It would be hosted in china and stripped of all political content deemed inappropriate by the CCP, still no.
jjcon··on The 'Insanely Broad' Restrict Act Could Ban Much More Than Just TikTok
Neither of these are just my personal hot takes. EFF and IA are far and away on the wrong side of the law here regardless of jurisdiction or interpretation. You can't say that is just my personal "misinformation" when they were just ruled against by a US district judge on the merits of the case:

Former board member of ACLU on the current ACLU:

jjcon··on The 'Insanely Broad' Restrict Act Could Ban Much More Than Just TikTok
No, that isn't what astroturfing typically implies. Astroturfing is spreading FUD and misinformation in more automatable or massive ways, which in turn will cause articles to be written that echo these misinterpretations or misinformation.

EFF and ACLU don't exactly have much credibility left in my book, but that is a personal opinion. EFF is still defending Internet Archive in the pirated books scheme. ACLU has retreated from the USA first amendment, which was their main organizational principle. Not exactly a moral high ground anymore.

jjcon··on TikTok Ban Bill Is Patriot Act 2.0 Trojan Horse [video]
> You have the right to do all that, but you can't do all that and at the same time claim to be a morally superior, free and open society.

Again... in matters of trade and foreign affairs no country (including the US) is completely free and open. I don't think anyone in the US has ever claimed to have completely open international trade policies so not even sure where you are getting that?

Just because this affects an app used by average people doesn't change the facts.

jjcon··on TikTok Ban Bill Is Patriot Act 2.0 Trojan Horse [video]
> I don't know, but China is not posing fines up to $1M and threatening 20 years in prison + civil forfeiture to just run a VPN.

Good thing that isn't what is happening here

jjcon··on TikTok Ban Bill Is Patriot Act 2.0 Trojan Horse [video]
Something worse? China and others bans almost every western social media company. Is the US not allowed to retaliate on those grounds alone? This bill only authorizes the banning of tech companies operated out of western enemy states: China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, Cuba and Venezuela (with a caveat).

The international economy is already not free (never has been), so I fail to see how this changes much other than shifting and clarifying some governmental powers. The US has banned Huawei telecommunications equipment, is this all that different other than the fact that it is much more public facing?

What makes the Chinese government problematic is not protectionism or even the great firewall, it is the genocide, the policing of criticism from all sources, the authoritarian single party rule.
