Excellent to see Balanced getting love for the great product they've built! Congrats guys!!

But does this stat of ~72% success rate (28% failure rate) include canceled/removed projects, which happens quite often after a failed attempt?
jjb123··on Dalton Caldwell: App.net is not Vaporware
Is the funding goal about the financial significance? I'd argue it's more about the significance of proving there are 10,000 paid members as the foundation for the community (a notion of PG's that Dalton has referenced).

I'm a backer, and I'd argue the brilliance of this is two-fold: Dalton gets to spend a month to see if there is enough demand to build this out for an initial community (instead of 8 months finding out the hard way), and us as backers will only be charged if there is a critical mass of interesting folks to launch the community.

Neither of these are about the financial significance of $500,000 or $200,000 for that matter.

jjb123··on Show HN: Stairway, daddy that will enforce some online meeting culture
Very impressive and refreshing. For our team, this would replace google hangouts and non-technical people needing to wade through technical discussions on irc... And more than anything, would replace a lot of unnecessary emails.
jjb123··on Maybe we're in a bubble but it doesn't matter
Right, I truly think it was genuine pride for the excellent addition of technology to the process. The guy rocked, but the point remains - the addition he's excited about will likely result in frictional unemployment in his particular position.

> Most people aren’t self aware enough to realize what is happening that is making their jobs disappear: a strong trend in software automation to make business processes more efficient.

This reminds me of a really helpful salesperson at the Apple store that was really excited/proud to tell me that you can now walk in and purchase an item without ever talking to a salesperson...

jjb123··on Demoting A Loyal Friend - Ben Horowitz
> Those are some powerful emotions, so get ready for an intense discussion. Ironically, the key to an emotional discussion is to take the emotion out of it. To do that, you must be very clear in your mind what you’ve decided and what you want to do.

Just had to do this, and this part nails it on the head. There cannot be any air of doubts or opportunities for the individual to feel they can change your mind. They won't change your mind. And it's better for all that there is not this ambiguity left in the situation.

jjb123··on 88% there: "Don't Mess With The Internet" billboard in Lamar Smith's district
as bostonvaulter noted below, i don't think it's so much about illumination on the issue (given there is only a billboard to work with). i think the idea is finding whatever will be the best vector for further news articles about the issue, local and national.

plus #dontmesswiththeinternet is a tiny bit shorter than #lamarsoldyououtforbiggovernment

ax, the link that started this thread is actually a good example of something that is possible through Crowdtilt and not through Kickstarter. groupfunding, as we call it, allows you to pool funds for anything from a $4,100 airbnb house for a bachelor party to a $1,800 campaign for a friend's dog's surgery (two examples of campaigns that tilted today that wouldn't be a use case for Kickstarter). Hope that helps!

Thanks, and yes those are steps we're actually working on right now :)

Give the site a try sometime and let us know any feedback you have that could improve the experience: team @ crowdtilt.com

jjb123··on 88% there: "Don't Mess With The Internet" billboard in Lamar Smith's district
that's not entirely true, as his district also has part of Austin where anti-SOPA/PIPA sentiment is quite high.

Yeah, we think the models that Kickstarter/Indiegogo have for projects and pre-sale retail is pretty amazing and we actually see campaigns that go up on our site that are more suited for a model like Kickstarter. With Crowdtilt, we've essentially taken our favorite elements of crowdfunding models like those and provided it for groups of friends/existing networks instead (so think of it for funding a wedding gift between bridesmaids or renting out a bar for sxsw, instead of a documentary or creative project).

I don't want to speak for Alexis, but I think he just thought he'd send it out to friends and people he's gotten through the SOPA ordeal to see if it had a chance of getting funded - wasn't really a "let's rally the internet" kind of thing (I literally think he set the whole thing up in about 10 minutes).
jjb123··on 88% there: "Don't Mess With The Internet" billboard in Lamar Smith's district
we actually want to provide a pretty substantial dashboard to admins so they can see (and like us, get obsessed with) things like referral traffic, the referrals with the most value/contributed, the velocity of contributions you've mentioned, etc... But we never thought of providing those kinds of metrics to general visitors actually. That's good feedback rdl, thanks.

(most uses of the site are for a "kickstarter for groups of friends" where instead of a $30,000 documentary, it's a $1,300 party-bus where like an evite, you share the link/campaign with your group instead of strangers just coming across it through a "browse" page)

As one of the co-founders of crowdtilt, I figure we'd mention that this is our fastest growing campaign to break $10k (2 days) to date. Not saying a _whole_ lot since it's only been about a month since launch, but still cool to see it go from Alexis' idea of "let's toss it up and see what happens" to ~90% funded in that time frame.
jjb123··on Don't mess with the Internet
this has been our fastest campaign to break $5k so far (2 hours).

not saying a whole lot since we just launched last month, but pretty awesome to see (and is a cause we're really glad to be a part of)..props to alexis and the reddit community.

jjb123··on 'Petridish' Aims To Crowdfund Science And Research Projects
i'm one of the two founders of crowdtilt, in the current yc batch - our modification on the model is crowdfunding for groups of friends (ie instead of a $40,000 documentary it's a $800 party-bus or $500 tailgate), though now it's being used for bigger things like renting out a space for sxsw or renting out a big house for group vacations.

note: crowdtilt doesn't really enter the discussion of this thread, but figured i'd answer your question above

jjb123··on NYC isn't catching the Valley anytime soon: Reflections on Startup School
I just got to Austin, and may be leaving at the beginning of the year, but as a city, the place is unreal. It's now bigger than San Francisco, but still feels like a town, which I prefer... Nothing like the Valley, but they say 2011 was kind of a watershed moment for the Austin tech scene with three web-based companies going public (shift away from enterprise tech). We'll see how that goes back into the ecosystem...
