jiqiren··on Show HN: A native macOS client for Apache Kafka
One problem I foresee is all my Kafka was behind layers of firewalls or restricted networks only accessible through jump hosts.

In other words, to make this easier it might be a good idea to have a builtin ssh/(generic CMD) kind of way of opening streams.

jiqiren··on My next Mac might be the last
as soon as Apple adds window snapping features we'll be reading blogs on this site about Apple stealing all these third-party developer ideas.
jiqiren··on Starlink Aviation
They were already operating StarLink on Gulfstreams back in February with Elon tweeting they expected full FAA approval 6 months later: https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1495320076135792644

Hawaiian Airlines seems to be the first airline that will be ready when approval hits: https://newsroom.hawaiianairlines.com/releases/hawaiian-airl...

jiqiren··on Pimping my Casio with Oddly Specific Objects' alternate motherboard and firmware
Why olive oil? Doesn’t that change the color slightly? Wouldn’t mineral or silicon oil work just as well without a color shift?
jiqiren··on Meta announces hiring freeze, warns employees of restructuring

jiqiren··on Reiser4 FS: Ways Extra Rigor Can Consume Years of Your Life [2005]

jiqiren··on Bots behind the game console shortage
Huh? I can buy Apple products at Best Buy, Costco, Target, Walmart, AT&T, T-mobile, Verizon, Kohl's, etc etc.

There are plenty of retail outlets that are more than happy to sell Apple products while Apple also sells...

jiqiren··on What Meta Does to Retain Me
It is very likely my dad will die from COVID, cancer, or heart failure thanks to Facebooks relentless stream of promoting lies across the platform.

facebook is great? Facebook is guilty of facilitating charlatans and grifters to hurt many more people.

jiqiren··on Why the Ukraine Crisis is the West's Fault (2014) [pdf]
From the opening paragraph this is extremely dated.

Recently, in so many words, Putin himself said he wanted the rebuilding of the old Soviet empire. This might have seemed like a plausible explanation during Crimea. But this is all garbage when hearing straight from Putin a couple of days ago.

jiqiren··on Apple to Apple Comparison: M1 Max vs. Intel
Incompetence.
jiqiren··on How credit cards make money
Is it true top tier customer reward cards (black/platinum/amex business/etc) have interchange fees that push into 3% territory? If so, how do companies like Square make money when they only charge the merchant 2.6% for a POS transaction?
jiqiren··on Man wins $65K after being fired for refusing to be fingerprinted
The company is a debt collector - they are already a bunch of bloodsuckers from the start.
jiqiren··on Detectives Just Used DNA to Solve a 1956 Double Homicide
The family agreed to help the police figure it out.

Maybe their reaction to learning the news was more like "yeah this makes sense - dad was an abusive asshole my whole life. At least I wasn't killed".

jiqiren··on The Sisyphean Task of DNS Client Config on Linux
If you are just trying to use curl or some other straightforward small application - this is enough. But running Kubernetes, docker, or some other container system? This mess is much more deep...

For example: there are known issues with systemd-resolved & Kubernetes (at least on Ubuntu that defaults to systemd-resolved) https://kubernetes.io/docs/tasks/administer-cluster/dns-debu...

jiqiren··on How Tim Cook transformed Apple after Steve Jobs
that's Bloomberg when one hits the free article limit. open the URL in a private safari tab.
jiqiren··on Ask HN: Why aren't you coding?
after setting up all the boilerplate I lost my steam.
jiqiren··on Amazon, Apple and Google Cut Off Parler
Is there honestly a struggle to tell the difference between a private company and a government? banning rioters from a plane doesn't seem unreasonable. they are not a protected class.
jiqiren··on A megacorp is not your dream job
After doing small startups, government work (research), and contract work.

Megacorp is easily the best. That pay of nearly $500k/year is actually really really great.

jiqiren··on Grubhub gig workers react angrily to change in tipping policy

jiqiren··on Fed announces details of new interbank service to support instant payments
Because there are already alternatives for transactions that have to instantly settle - like SWIFT or FedWire.
jiqiren··on GTK 3.99
This makes me feel old. I got fed up in university submitting app patches using GTK in ~1999.

Still hasn't been improved in 20 years? sad.

jiqiren··on Etcd, or, why modern software makes me sad
The Go Language.
jiqiren··on Students are failing AP tests because the College Board can’t handle HEIC images
ok but what if you're told this 'technical requirement' in a tweet while taking the test? and you don't even use twitter?
jiqiren··on Alphabet Announces First Quarter 2020 Results [pdf]
Can someone explain how YouTube creators are saying their cut of revenue has been reduced by ~50% but YouTube is reporting record jump in revenue (up 33% Q1)? YouTube is just squeezing them for more profit?

jiqiren··on The facts around Zoom and encryption for meetings/webinars
you're missing the fact they manage all the keys. So it isn't E2E encryption... Each client should generate their own key and exchange it with all the other clients directly. Zoom is collecting all the keys in their cloud.

Their blog post even says if zoom managing keys isn't good security for enterprise - they will have a new product (soon?) to host the keys in an enterprises DC instead.

jiqiren··on California once had mobile hospitals, ventilator stockpile but dismantled them
Only needed $5.8million/year in an overall budget of $129billion. It also resulted in an ultimate loss of an already spent $200million initial investment.
jiqiren··on California once had mobile hospitals, ventilator stockpile but dismantled them
I kind of wish Arnold was more vocal about the stupidity of them dismantling what he built. Was only $5.8million/year to maintain the $200million+ initial investment. What a huge waste.
jiqiren··on An Update from Robinhood’s Founders
Quick example: They bought puts on Friday and couldn't unload them for a full day + following morning.

Monday morning puts were down - it was obvious the market was recovering in a big way. Instead of cutting losses at ~20% in the morning they lost ~99% of their position. Some lost 100% since the options expired EOD.
