jiqiren··on Google threatened with being broken up by US
Calling people became cheap. Think about making a cross-country phone call in the pre-broken up AT&T era. It was like 25¢/min. Now I pay $35/month and can literally call most countries for up to 500min before I get metered (Visible+).
jiqiren··on Intel lost the Sony Playstation business to AMD
The key in this quote is: "in hindsight, the forecasted cost was wrong"

100% intel screwup.

Digg v4. I started at Digg as employee 30 or something close to that. When v4 was being designed I was (among others) very much not supportive of the concept. I did the work they asked of me and about ~4 months before launch I was fired.

Some Digg colleagues reached out asking why I decided to leave… since that is what digg internally announced. This is when I understand a number of others before me were also fired and not just “deciding to pursue other opportunities”.

EDIT: to be clear I don’t fault them for firing me. People not onboard for a decision made by leadership in a startup are fair game to be fired. You need people to believe in the product and I definitely wasn’t a believer.

Anyway I had 60-90days (can’t remember deadline) to exercise my options or let them expire. I decided to let them expire since I thought v4 was a bad direction. Honestly I was very stressed about this decision but I went with my gut. Saved me half a house worth of money.

jiqiren··on How Hertz’s bet on Teslas went sideways
The scenario of Elon aggressively cutting prices was likely not something they modeled as it is pretty unprecedented.

Elon should have kept prices high while giving deep discounts and priority on parts to fleet purchases. That is what a sane car manufacturer does. To keep cars moving for retail you can have limited sales for holidays and seasons with "cash back" (not officially changing base price) and buying the loan APR to a lower rate.

Instead Elon crashed the price of Tesla's entire lineup.

jiqiren··on Kia recalls over 427K Telluride SUVs because they might roll away while parked
I was taught in drivers education (California) to always set my parking brake because popping out of gear while parked was a common issue.

I hope Kia and Hyundai learn from this and get OTA updates working for everything.

jiqiren··on Learn to Read Korean in 15 Minutes
I believe most Koreans would argue it’s fortunately. Hanja is no longer needed.
jiqiren··on US developers can offer non-app store purchasing, Apple still collect commission
You missed where Epic was ordered to pay the 30% cut they "saved" when using their own payment processor. It was ruled this cut is completely legal. Now that Epic lost appeal with Supreme Court that ruling sticks.

Apple is likely asking for 27% cut for non-IAP w/Apple because they are saving 3% by not processing credit cards directly. They don't need devs complaining it's MORE expensive to use their own payment processor.

jiqiren··on Cloudflare employee posts layoff call with HR and goes viral [video]
It really depends on the company and why you are going. I gave 6months notice when I worked at Apple (FIRE) and slowly offloaded all my responsibilities. I documented many things for whoever would come in to replace me. They gave me a going away dinner and I still connect with former colleagues.
jiqiren··on Google lays off hundreds working on its voice-activated assistant
I've not shared my story. Much of the FIRE community is sick of hearing about engineers doing it. I was a SRE in Maps - I joined after Apple fired Scott. Many gave me a lot of hell for going to Apple Maps but there was a ton of work. I did move to Portland metro area during pandemic and actually got permission for perm remote work at Apple. But once I saw I could FIRE I waited for 1 more RSU vest and left. Zero FOMO - a coworker on my team left 6 months before me. I'm currently on a 4month vacation in Asia with wife. I'm still connected to former colleagues at Apple and visit the offices. I left Spring of 2022.

Also retired from Apple (FIRE). I never worked so hard or got paid so much in my life. Would recommend AAAAAaaa+++++ would do again
jiqiren··on Hobbes OS/2 Archive: As of April 15th, 2024 this site will no longer exist
I ran a BBS on my 386 in a DOS box on OS/2. I basically had a usable computer and in the background people would dial-in, play door-games, download files, get some fidonet(?) feeds, etc etc. Was completely not a bother at all.
jiqiren··on Gmail using too much RAM: 1-2GB per tab in Safari
exactly. I have 12GB of gmail all synced with mail.app and it's using ~540MB ram.
jiqiren··on What If Google Wasn't the Default?
Google should be forced to spin out Chrome and Android and let each of them charge for defaults.
jiqiren··on Booking.com makes a fortune – so why is it leaving its bills to hotels unpaid?
if this is US, file a wage claim with local state government. Reimbursement for expenses while traveling is valid.

Depending on the state you can file many years later after you've left the job. So feel free to get a new job and file a claim with a spreadsheet of what they missed.

jiqiren··on D.C.'s ban on cashless businesses takes effect
Article didn't state if it was legal or not - but maybe the solution is to charge a $5 fee for using cash.

Also... Yes, cash is expensive to handle. Theft, keeping change, a register, maybe a safe, transport to bank, fees from banks etc

I'd be at the Apple Store the following day buying a new iPhone. I don't understand all the romanticizing over having a break - F that. I got stuff to do and people to call.
jiqiren··on I think I kind of hate lazy loading
This is a solved problem with Safari since at least High Sierra days. You add any webpage to your reading list and with appropriate settings you'll have a full local copy.

https://support.apple.com/guide/safari/keep-a-reading-list-s... relevant quote below...

Save a page in your Reading List to read when you’re not connected to the Internet: Control-click the page summary in the sidebar, then choose Save Offline. You can also swipe left over the page summary, then click Save Offline. To automatically save all pages in your Reading List, choose Safari > Preferences, click Advanced, then select “Save articles for offline reading automatically.”

jiqiren··on Texas paid Bitcoin miner more than $31M to cut energy usage
Why not just roll some blackouts to these businesses obviously not essential services?
jiqiren··on UK pulls back from clash with Big Tech over private messaging
I was a federal contractor for NASA and let me tell you about government email: quota of 250MB of storage (2010-2012).

I spent every morning moving emails with attachments to local folders on my Mac (which had no backups) to keep from going over quota. If I went on a 2 week vacation emails would start to bounce to me.

After that fiasco I understood why Colin Powell told Hillary Clinton to just run her own email server (for non-classified communication).

jiqiren··on Hotels turn to robots and room cleanings every 4 days to ease staffing shortages
they were likely so underpaid at terrible jobs they already had subsidized healthcare, section-8 housing, and know all about food pantries etc.

Going out less, not spending money on childcare, getting rid of extra car, and spending time cooking for self instead of going out - a bad low paying job is easy to lose.

jiqiren··on Google admits to violating federal law and plans to keep doing it
please update if you get $10k out of them in a settlement. I'll be happy to file myself.
