jinpa_zangpo··on Metaobject protocols: Why we want them and what else they can do (1993) [pdf]
Raku (formerly Perl 6) is built on top of a metaobject protocol:

> Raku is built on a metaobject layer. That means that there are objects (the metaobjects) that control how various object-oriented constructs (such as classes, roles, methods, attributes or enums) behave.

jinpa_zangpo··on Covid-19: Researcher blows the whistle on Pfizer vaccine trial data integrity
In the 50's 10-30% of the polio vaccine was contaminated with Simian Virus 40 (SV40), a virus shown to cause cancer in animals. There was much concern that the contamination would lead to increased cancer risk in humans, though results from studies were mixed. I believe this meets the definition of long term damage from vaccines.
jinpa_zangpo··on Covid-19 Mortality Risk Correlates Inversely with Vitamin D3 Status
There are relatively few dietary sources of Vitamin D, fatty fish and fortified foods being the main sources. It is quite possible to eat a healthy diet and be deficient in Vitamin D if you do not eat these foods. The principal source of Vitamin D is exposure to sunlight on bare skin and people at northern latitudes cannot get sufficient exposure during the winter.
jinpa_zangpo··on Effect of early treatment with fluvoxamine on risk of hospitalization for Covid
Here's an analogy originally from Pam Popper. You wouldn't go to a car dealership and buy the car that the dealer recommends. You study up on the models available and choose the one most appropriate for you. And even if you don't know much about the mechanics of cars, even how to change your oil, you probably do a pretty good job, at least better than choosing the car the dealer recommends. Yet the majority of people accept whatever treatment their doctor recommends without asking questions or doing any research on whether the treatment is appropriate. People can learn how to make independent medical decisions, just as they can learn how to buy a car for themselves.
jinpa_zangpo··on Covid is the #1 killer of LEOs in 2020 and 2021
I don't want to minimize the damage caused by Covid-19 over the past year. But I think cardiovascular diseases probably killed more police officers over the past year.
jinpa_zangpo··on IBM and airlines won’t comply with Texas governor’s ban on vaccine mandates
1. Vaccine mandates ignore the science by not recognizing people with naturally acquired immunity to Covid.

2. They ignore the science by not recognizing that the vaccinated also transmit Covid.

3. They are unjust because they do not recognize some people declined the second Covid shot after a bad reaction to the first and are therefore considered unvaccinated.

jinpa_zangpo··on Art and Theosophy (2006)
The anti-vaccination movement predates theosophy and is as old as vaccination itself. There is some overlap in membership, but it is a historical error to see it as an offshoot of theosophy.
jinpa_zangpo··on Covid: 37% of people have symptoms six months after infection
The symptoms reported in the article do not require hospitalization.
jinpa_zangpo··on Major Tea Party Group Was Backed by Billionaire Donors, Hacked Documents Reveal
If you make a donation to a political candidate, that is public information today.
jinpa_zangpo··on The UK’s delta surge is collapsing
Long Covid is not a problem in children according to this study:

jinpa_zangpo··on Who Are the Unvaccinated in America?
When I've asked the question, the answer offered is that vaccines produce higher antigen levels than natural immunity. However, I don't believe this is evidence that vaccines produce longer lasting immunity.
jinpa_zangpo··on The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind (1976)
The wider question is how the nature of consciousness has changed through time and what evidence do we have that it has. The example that has stuck with me is when St. Augustine marvels in his Confessions that Bishop Ambrose of Milan could read without moving his lips, suggesting that at one time all thought was subvocalized speech.

Owen Barfield thought that you could trace the evolution of consciousness through the history of language and made the argument in the book "History in English Words": "In our language alone, not to speak of its many companions, the past history of humanity is spread out in an imperishable map, just as the history of the mineral earth lies embedded in the layers of its outer crust.... Language has preserved for us the inner, living history of our soul. It reveals the evolution of consciousness"

jinpa_zangpo··on Google Drive bans distribution of “misleading content”
The problem isn't that one company has made its own decision on what to ban. The problem is that the White House is literally compiling a list and telling all the social media companies who to ban. This is censorship by proxy.
jinpa_zangpo··on A Chemical Hunger: Mysteries
People are getting fat because they are consuming more calories. And they are consuming more calories because processed foods are engineered to make you overeat them. To lose weight, stop eating processed foods and learn to cook simple foods from scratch, minimizing the use of sugar, salt, and oil, three common appetite stimulants.
jinpa_zangpo··on El Salvador to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender
El Salvador has already given up control of its money supply. It uses US dollars as its currency.
jinpa_zangpo··on The S1 protein of SARS-CoV-2 crosses the blood–brain barrier in mice
I assume this also means that the mRNA vaccines also cross the blood-brain barrier, or am I mistaken?
jinpa_zangpo··on Anti-vaxx industry ‘could be worth more than $1bn to social media giants’
The article concludes: “This is why we need government authorities ... [to] clamp down on criminal profiteering from health misinformation.”

It is not a crime to publish articles or videos with views disagreeing with the mainstream view. Not long ago the lab leak theory was considered "health misinformation" and thus criminal activity from the article's point of view. I would hope people would be more cautious after that mistake, but apparently not.

jinpa_zangpo··on How a secret European language ‘made a rabbit’ and survived
The phrase "it's all Greek to me" comes from Shakespeare's play, Julius Caesar:

"He gave a speech in Greek."

"What did he say?"

"It was all Greek to me."

jinpa_zangpo··on Male balding is a major risk factor for severe Covid-19
"There are a lot of myths out there about balding men. One of them is that men with MPB are more virile and have higher levels of testosterone. This isn’t necessarily the case. Men with MPB may actually have lower circulating levels of testosterone but higher levels of the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT. Alternately, you may simply have genes that give you hair follicles that are highly sensitive to testosterone or DHT." [1]

jinpa_zangpo··on A Complete Course of the Raku programming language
Rational numbers instead of floating point as the default real type.
jinpa_zangpo··on YouTube suspends Donald Trump's channel
I still believe the solution is to handle social media like email. Have a common protocol that all providers use, have multiple providers, allow providers to remove abusers, and give users the ability to block.
jinpa_zangpo··on Gene Wolfe Turned Science Fiction into High Art (2019)
Gene Wolfe explained in a commentary to his series that the aliens (called hierodules) are speaking in blank verse.
jinpa_zangpo··on George Orwell is out of copyright. What happens now?
I think a Disney version of Animal Farm is more likely. Animated talking animals are Disney's wheelhouse. I can see Napoleon and Snowball singing a duet as the opening song.
jinpa_zangpo··on New U.S. Dietary Guidelines Reject Recommendation to Cut Sugar, Alcohol Intake
School meals are designed around the US dietary guidelines, so they are important.
jinpa_zangpo··on Evidence of “modified gravity” in 150 galaxies bolsters dark matter alternative
ApJ is one of the most respected journals in astronomy.
jinpa_zangpo··on YouTube to remove content that alleges widespread election fraud
The conclusion o draw from this is not YouTube / Google are bad for censoring, but near monopolies are bad, especially in the field of news and information delivery. And the solution is to use existing antitrust law to break up the monopolies and require them to support a common api, like Open Social.
jinpa_zangpo··on The impossibility—and the necessity—of distinguishing science from nonscience
There are no experiments in astronomy either.
jinpa_zangpo··on Humira’s Drug Formula: Start at a High Price, Go Higher
The solution to overpriced patent protected drugs is forced licensing of patents at a royalty rate set by the government.
jinpa_zangpo··on In Raising the World’s I.Q., the Secret’s in the Salt (2006)
Several European countries add fluoride to salt instead of water.
jinpa_zangpo··on It Costs $30 to Make a DIY EpiPen
There's no evidence stents prolong life. The real corruption is that stent operations continue to be done in spite of doctors knowing this.
