jinpa_zangpo··on FTX faces potential hack, sees mysterious outflows totaling more than $600M
All the countries in South America have extradition treaties with the United States. If he's looking for a monastery, he should head to a Buddhist monastery in Vietnam.

PED = Performance enhancing drug. Used by athletes for a competitive edge.

TRT = Testosterone Replacement Therapy. Used by older men to restore youthful levels.

SARM = Selective Androgen Receptor Modulator. Non-steroid drug with steroid like effects. The term "steroid" refers to the shape of the molecule. Steroids have four linked carbon rings as a backbone.

jinpa_zangpo··on White House Is Mulling a Ban on Bitcoin Mining
Instead of picking and choosing what types of energy use should be allowed, the government should determine what the environmental cost of all energy use is and apply that as a tax. A so-called "carbon tax." One would think that this is Economics 101, but the idea evades many intelligent people.
jinpa_zangpo··on Will This Be the First Country Bankrupted by Crypto?
El Salvador is in no danger of defaulting on its debt. It has offered to buy back its debt maturing before 2025.

Mario Gómez was briefly detained by police in El Salvador on suspicion of being involved in a phishing scam and then released. There are many vocal critics of President Bukele and his bitcoin policy in El Salvador's Assembly and the legacy press. None have been jailed.

jinpa_zangpo··on JPMorgan: “El Salvador Reduces Fiscal Deficit, Despite Bitcoin”
If you only follow the US press, you haven't heard of the following scandal surrounding the US Embassy in El Salvador.

Last year (2021) two deputies of Bukele's New Ideas party, José García and Gerardo Aguilar, were caught on audio tape discussing with Roy Garcia, a representative of some El Salvadoreans living abroad who was trying to form a new party, how the United States embassy was offering money to induce 20 members of the New Ideas party to leave and join his new party. The US embassy denied the plan existed, but the two deputies were expelled from El Salvador's assembly. The US ambassador to El Salvador, Jean Manes, left her position shortly after the scandal became known.

jinpa_zangpo··on JPMorgan: “El Salvador Reduces Fiscal Deficit, Despite Bitcoin”
The same president that made bitcoin El Salvador's legal currency also managed the growth of the economy and its response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Nayib Bukele is the most interesting politician in America today.
jinpa_zangpo··on Is El Salvador Up?
A fair analysis of El Salvador's bitcoin experiment would have to include the foreign investment and international travel that it stimulated.
jinpa_zangpo··on Crypto miners aren't honest about power use – time for a crackdown
We have a free market to make decisions about what uses of energy are worthwhile and government decisions about how to allocate energy are likely to lead to cronyism if not outright disaster. If you want to reduce the use of energy in order to reduce carbon emissions, the market oriented solution is a carbon tax or a cap and trade system.
jinpa_zangpo··on Ask HN: What exactly is a mindfulness meditation?
Mindfulness is focusing your attention on the present moment. Usually some object is used, most often the breath. It differs from non-meditation because normally we spend most of our time thinking about the future or the past, often with worry or regret. While we are focused on the future or the past we are living in our imaginations and not in reality.

The purpose of mindfulness meditation is to develop the habit of being present to what we are experiencing now. Like all habits, it is strengthened through practice. Of course, sometimes we must think about the future or the past, but this should be a conscious choice rather than an unconscious habit.

With time, our ability to be mindful gets stronger so that we can practice meditation without an object. In this sort of meditation we remain aware on whatever arises in our minds without trying to alter in by holding on or pushing away. The advantage is meditation without an object is less artificial and allows us to understand the mind as it naturally is instead of some contrived state. This meditation is sometimes called "doing nothing." This is both true and false, because normally we are always doing something with our minds. Simply observing is unusual. You might object that we are always aware of our minds. Yes, but there are degrees of awareness. Just as we always have some attention on the present, we are also always somewhat aware of our minds, but the degree of awareness can be less or more.

jinpa_zangpo··on U.S. inflation reached a new four-decade high of 8.6% in May
Inflation is caused by growth in the money supply. It will end when this growth is restricted. Controlling inflation is not some unknown black art. If socialist Venezuela can solve its inflation problem (and it has) so can the United States.
jinpa_zangpo··on El Salvador expected to default as Bitcoin plummets
First, El Salvador is not a dictatorship. President Bukele and his party won in a free election and everyone expects he will win re-eelection in 2024.

Second, no branch of government has been eliminated. What happened is that his party impeached the justices on their supreme court, replacing them with justices from his party. In fact, "packing" the court, the same thing leftists are urging the Democrats to do in the USA.

Third, the claim that the IMF does not lend to dictators is obviously untrue.

jinpa_zangpo··on Long Covid: the invisible public health crisis fuelling labour shortages
The more likely reason for the current labor shortage is Boomers who took an early retirement at the beginning of the Covid lockdowns who won't be returning to work. I suspect labor shortages will be the new normal as the number of workers retiring will continue to exceed the number entering the workforce.
jinpa_zangpo··on El Salvador expected to default as Bitcoin plummets
The real reason for the risk of default is that El Salvador was counting on a loan from the IMF and the IMF refused to make a loan to El Salvador while Bitcoin is legal currency. Despite his misadventures with Bitcoin, President Bukele is wildly popular in El Salvador.
jinpa_zangpo··on The quest to make a 'contagious' animal vaccine
"Sixteen case-control studies that assessed the development of low IQ in children who had been exposed to fluoride earlier in their life were included in this review. A qualitative review of the studies found a consistent and strong association between the exposure to fluoride and low IQ. ... Children who live in a fluorosis area have five times higher odds of developing low IQ than those who live in a nonfluorosis area or a slight fluorosis area."

jinpa_zangpo··on The quest to make a 'contagious' animal vaccine
"The oral polio vaccine that's used primarily in low- and middle-income countries - it's been the workhorse of this global effort to eradicate polio. But it is a live vaccine. It's cheap. It's easy to administer.

"However, this live vaccine is continued to be used worldwide. And while you're doing that, some of that vaccine has gotten out into the world. And it's mutated. It starts circulating again, just like regular polio. But early on, it's just - it's still a vaccine. It's not dangerous. And then slowly, it sort of regains strength. And they're finding they can actually genetically see this - that scientists can actually trace it back directly to the vaccine. And now these vaccine-linked cases are actually causing more cases of paralysis each year than actual traditional - what scientists call wild polio."

jinpa_zangpo··on Bitcoin Was Made for This Moment. So Why Isn’t It Booming?
Because "this moment" was anticipated and is accounted for in the current price. Bitcoiners are a paranoid group and have been expecting government overreach for years. Those late to the party, like DHH, are a minority.
jinpa_zangpo··on My Battle with Post-Finasteride Syndrome, Part I
Doctors are the highest paid profession in the United States because they have a legal monopoly on the practice of surgery and prescription of medicine. Because their income flows from this monopoly, they over value medical treatments that use prescription drugs and under value treatments that do not, such as diet and exercise. The latest example is the reluctance of the medical community to say the Vitamin D reduces the risk from contracting Covid-19, even though there is strong evidence to show this. Since this is so, your doctor is likely to not tell you the full story of the risks versus the benefits of the drugs you are prescribed and you would do well to research the question on your own, especially if it is a drug you will take for a chronic disease.
jinpa_zangpo··on Sinicization of Tibet
Tibet declared its independence from China after the fall of the Qing dynasty, just as Mongolia did. The only difference is that Mongolia had the Soviet Union as an ally and Tibet had none. So when the Red Chinese army invaded in 1951 it was forced to negotiate a surrender under the 17 point agreement. It should be noted that the Qing was not a Chinese dynasty, it was Manchurian.
jinpa_zangpo··on El Salvador Is Now over 31% Down on Its Bitcoin Bet
President Bukele is betting that the bitcoin community will lend him money on less onerous terms than the IMF and invest their profits from bitcoin in El Salvador. He is buying goodwill from the bitcoin community, whether he also makes a profit on his bitcoin is secondary.
jinpa_zangpo··on Ask HN: Are Covid vaccines an instance of the trolley problem?
The trolley problem is often misunderstood. The point of the problem is that two actions have the same consequence (pushing a lever and pushing a person off a bridge) but many peoples' moral intuition is that one action is moral and the other not. It is an argument against consequentialism, the belief that what makes an action moral or not is its consequences. The consequential view of morality is that authorizing the use of a vaccine is moral if it saves more lives than it costs. One deontological view might be that the government has a responsibility to completely test all vaccines before it releases them. Thus the early release of a vaccine on the theory that it would save more lives would be correct from the consequentialist view, but not on this deontological view. This would be the reverse of what the trolley problem is arguing.

Let me repeat what I've said before. The solution is not to regulate the big social media companies. It is to split them up and require them to implement an api so people can aggregate different companies of their choosing.

jinpa_zangpo··on IMF warns El Salvador: “Bitcoin should not be used as a legal tender”
The IMF regularly reviews the finances of different countries and makes recommendations. The report guides the government of the country as well as other countries which may provide assistance. This report is part of the IMF's usual cycle and is not in response to President Bukele making bitcoin legal tender in El Salvador, although it discusses that issue. Like most countries El Salvador runs a deficit and relies on foreigners to buy its bonds and financial assistance from other countries.
