jinnko··on Ask HN: What default model do you use and why?
I was using various open weights models until glm-5.3-flash came out recently. It's incredibly capable and cheap, even if it's very verbose and not the fastest. I've assigned it to all my agents across my harness and it's getting the job done. Still needs a good steer every now and then, but a great work horse.
jinnko··on Linux 7.1
Check out FastFlowLM for AMD NPU support.
jinnko··on Reconciling Earth's growing energy imbalance with ocean warming
After seeing the photos of earth from the Artemis II mission, I wondered why the new photos look washed out. Could it be the ”dirty mirror" effect described in this paper?
jinnko··on Asbestos, talc, and The Lancet's 1977 publication
Veritasium recently did a very good episode about asbestos which also mentions this paper. Well worth a watch. https://youtu.be/cMx139eTxoc
jinnko··on Incremental Backups of Gmail Takeouts
I haven't used it for a while, but imapsync[0] still supports Gmail. With an approach like this you can regularly sync and get your messages in a standard format. Plus you don't have to wrangle those 50GB takeout dumps.

jinnko··on DNA Learning Center: Mechanism of Replication 3D Animation
I remember studying this in detail 30 years ago. To watch that whole process in a video now it's mind blowing. Thank you.
jinnko··on New antibiotic targets IBD and AI predicted how it would work
I had a similar experience, i.e. strict keto for 9 months and fully came off meds with no signs of UC or asthma. UC came back after around 2 years and I don't remember how long before I had to start asthma meds again. I can no longer do keto though, each time I try I get palpitations now after around a week.
jinnko··on Ask HN: The government of my country blocked VPN access. What should I use?
AmneziaVPN has censorship circumvention options and makes it easy to set up a self hosted instance of that's what you prefer, or use their hosted service.

jinnko··on GDPR meant nothing: chat control ends privacy for the EU [video]
Once upon a time, prior to Microsoft or eBay purchasing it, this is what Skype was. It required a set of central instances to be supernodes to facilitate discovery, then each client communicated with others directly. And IIRC any client up long enough and with sufficient compute and bandwidth, could become a supernode.
jinnko··on Ask HN: Why is "Tea" still on the App Store after so many data breaches?
According to Wikipedia this is misattributed.

Still resonates though.

jinnko··on Show HN: Empty Enter Expander – Type less in the terminal with this tool
I've been using https://github.com/denisidoro/navi for this kind of scenario.
jinnko··on Ask HN: Best way to simultaneously run multiple projects locally?
I hadn't come across overmind before and searching turned up several very different projects.

I think the parent comment is referring to this one: https://github.com/DarthSim/overmind

jinnko··on Goodbye K-9 Mail
It's a reference to Dr Who.

jinnko··on Wikipedia searches reveal differing styles of curiosity
There's a good episode of Mindscape (Sean Carroll) with the authors of Curious Minds, Perry Zurn and Dani Bassett, which goes into depth about the busybody, dancer and hunter concepts.

jinnko··on Cannonball: An enhanced OutRun engine
This is great.

If you're into these retro games there's a couple of others that have been fun:

jinnko··on Using GPS satellites to detect tsunamis via ionospheric ionization waves
I don't get it, are the figures here typos?

> Given that GNSS satellites typically travel in medium Earth orbit, approximately 20,000 km or 12.4 miles above the surface, GNSS systems are well suited for detecting fluctuations in ionospheric density. > > Further, because ground stations can detect GNSS satellites from such a significant distance (up to 1,200 km),...

Should that be 2000 km and 1240 mi?

jinnko··on macOS 15.2 breaks the ability to copy the OS to another drive
A bit of nostalgia.

jinnko··on Using Rust in non-Rust servers to improve performance
I'm curious how many cores the server the tests ran on had, and what the performance would be of handling the requests in native node with worker threads[1]? I suspect there's an aspect of being tied to a single main thread that explains the difference at least between tier 0 and 1.

jinnko··on Proton announces release of a new VPN protocol, "Stealth"
Tailscale has been working in China for me the last couple of weeks.

jinnko··on SSH over HTTPS
I used to use a tool that does exactly this nearly 20 years ago to poke a hole through corporate firewalls, corkscrew[0].

Nice standalone implementation and write up though.

jinnko··on Show HN: Obligator – An OpenID Connect server for self-hosters
I recently came across Caddy Security[1], and while it's not an OIDC IdP itself, it does serve as a good authentication gateway that's easy to get up and running and maintain.

jinnko··on Bedbug crisis sparks political row in Paris as insect ‘scourge’ continues
Last year we were at a very well kept Airbnb in Cornwall that turned out to have been bugs.

Last spring we stayed at an equally nice family place in the black forest (Germany) also with bed bugs.

My brother bought a nice wooden cabinet in London that turned out to be infested.

It's incredibly distressing cuz you don't want to bring them home. And I've spoken with a fair few people since who've had similar experiences in the past few years.

jinnko··on A place where no humans will tread for 100k years
