jimt1234··on Talking to strangers at the gym
I had a friend years ago that was truly amazing at interacting with people. She could, and did, talk to anyone - a rich guy with a $20K watch or a homeless guy; it didn't matter to her. And, the thing that really stuck with me is she always left the people that she interacted with feeling better. Always. I have numerous memories of her conversing with people and watching their expressions or body language completely change in a matter of minutes.

Anyway, that's the part I've tried to focus on - making at least one person I interact with everyday feel better. It doesn't have to be a major, life-changing interaction, just inject a tiny bit of positivity into someone's life. The main thing I realized was that I had to surrender the fear of being perceived as cheesy, corny, fake or manipulative. I think it's gone well; I hope I've made others feel better, if only for a moment. But honestly, I think it's helped me the most.

jimt1234··on Refuse to let your doctor record you
This situation is real. I've had the same doctor my entire adult life (~25 years). We've got a pretty informal relationship. I even saw her hammered at a bar one night, and had to give her a ride home because her friends were also drunk AF. Anyway, a few years ago, during an annual checkup, she asked how my family was doing and I made a joke about my brother drinking too much. A few weeks later I started receiving pamphlets in the mail about treating alcoholism, ads for rehab centers. I just brushed it off, didn't make any connection. Then, the next year, during my annual checkup, my doctor wasn't available, so I got a different doctor, someone I'd never talked to in my life. She immediately started asking me about my drinking. I fired back, asking WTF she was talking about. She said, "Oh, well your file says alcoholism runs in your family.", and then started lecturing me about getting over the shame of alcoholism is the first step to beating it. I don't even drink. No one in my family drinks other than my brother. He was drinking a lot at that time because he favorite NFL team (LA Rams) was doing really well, and he was celebrating a lot. And it was just a joke.

The next year, during my annual checkup, I gave my doctor a load of crap, telling her to record nothing I say unless I explicitly tell her to. She tried to defend the system, but she agreed. I'm still upset that my "file" still mentions alcoholism.

Unsurprisingly, Trump is downplaying the situation, comparing it to Pete Rose betting on his own team. And, naturally, conservatives are falling in line, excusing the situation because Congress does this all the time.

jimt1234··on Ping-pong robot beats top-level human players
I've always wished for something similar: autonomous car racing. No human drivers. No remote controls. Just program the cars before the race, and let them go. Maybe even load the cars with mild explosives so they go BOOM when they crash.

jimt1234··on At long last, InfoWars is ours
I visited with my family in rural Missouri recently. Alex Jones and InfoWars is gospel to them. I was amazed at how many times cited him as an authority on various topics. I thought they were joking, but apparently, Obama made a promise with his father before his passing that he would destroy the United States. Oh, and of course, Obama is Satan, and Trump was sent by God to protect us all. Of course.

jimt1234··on The future of everything is lies, I guess: Where do we go from here?
One of the "lies" that concerns me is AI-generated music and its deterioration of the personal connection between musician and listener. As MCA from the Beastie Boys said, "If you can feel what I feel then it's a musical masterpiece." The listener feels a connection to the musician (and other people) with sad songs because everyone has felt sad, or with love songs because everyone has fallen in love, and so on. The listener can still get a feeling from AI-gen'ed music, but is it the same? What is the connection? Or, has that "connection" between musician and listener always been bullshit? That is, has it always been just about music triggering your brain to make you feel a certain way, and the source of that feeling really isn't what people care about - just give me a feeling?

jimt1234··on Afrika Bambaataa, hip-hop pioneer, has died
Back in the early-80s, after learning about sampled music, most people's next question was, "Who the fuck is Kraftwerk?" LOL
jimt1234··on Afrika Bambaataa has died
Afrika Bambaataa is a major reason I fell in love with hip hop back around '82. Further, I've always felt "perfect beat" is a much better song than the more popular "planet rock". Back then, "planet rock" was for regular folk, "perfect beat" was for the breakers. Regular folk would be dancing on the floor, just like normal, and then, later in the evening, the DJ would drop "perfect beat" and it was on - specifically, this part: https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=229&v=rHQ11l4uiM4 . The dance floor would clear, otherwise you'd catch a foot from some dude spinning around. Good times.

I'm still trying to digest all the s3xual abuse allegations against Bam later in life.

RIP Bam

jimt1234··on Move Detroit
> I think Detroit is well past its “bottom”.

Agreed. My family's from Detroit. Like so many others, they left in the mid-70s because Detroit had become unfathomably bad - the job market was shit, crime and corruption was out of control, and there was no hope for things turning around. In the mid-80s, there were countless jokes about Detroit, like this: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/iFxyAA0l0nU

jimt1234··on 81yo Dodgers fan can no longer get tickets because he doesn't have a smartphone
My concern here is not that a simple transaction like purchasing a ticket to a baseball game requires a smartphone, but that the purchase now binds the customer to a personal and irreversible relationship to multiple entities (MLB, the Dodgers, the ticket agency, etc.) that (1) is not necessary, and (2) adds no benefit to the customer.

Honest question; sorta related: How long until prostitution is legalized in the United States? jimt1234··on The truth that haunts the Ramones: 'They sold more T-shirts than records'
Seems like The Ramones were way ahead of their time, whether they knew it or not. Before the digital age, most bands made the bulk of their their money from record sales. Concert tours were just promotional events for the latest album. That model has since been flipped to what The Ramones were doing 50 years ago - "music sales" earns little compared to concerts and merchandising. Now that's punk rock! LOL
jimt1234··on Walmart: ChatGPT checkout converted 3x worse than website
I'm not promoting "ChatGPT Checkout", however, just because something sucks now doesn't mean it will suck forever. I'm confident they'll iterate and improve. I say this because my 14-year-old niece's entire world seems to be ChatGPT; it's pretty much the only way she interacts with the internet. I don't think she's alone - all her young peers are like this, too. Retailers know this, so they've got no choice but to improve the experience of purchasing crap through an AI chat system.

A childhood friend's dad was a cop for 25 years; retired in the mid-90s. He never shot his gun, and only unholstered once in his entire cop career. My friend followed his dad, also became a cop in the exact same district; he's getting ready to retire. He's unholstered his gun countless times. He says he's shot at numerous people in his career, and even killed one dude. I once asked him what the difference was between his career and his dad's. He said crime was actually worse when his dad was a cop, a lot worse. But the big difference was the public's attitude and his training. He said the public had accepted the "tough on crime" narrative; that wasn't the case in his dad's days. But also, the training was straight-up military. He said that if he didn't use the military-style tactics, he would be sunned by his peers and even reprimanded. He said the training repeated one narrative, over and over: "It's us versus them."

He told me a story about a noise complaint. He said him and his partner banged on the front door of the house, but there was no response. He said they called in the status, but were told to wait. About 10 minutes later multiple SWAT vehicles arrived. He said one of the vehicles literally drove into the side of the house, making a huge hole in the house. About a dozen SWAT officers ran into the house, multiple shots were fired, the tear gas started a fire. The house was absolutely destroyed. ... No one was home; the house was empty. A kid left the TV on really loud when he left for school. A neighbor called it in, hoping the cops could just go into the house and turn off the TV. Worse, there was no punishment to anyone involved; the cops were doing as they were trained.
