jimsimmons··on Eastern philosophy says there is no “self” – science agrees
Advaita, which my orthodox Brahmin family believes and practices, proclaims the supremacy and totality of the self.

Buddhism which was dominant among the elites and aristocrats by 8th century was largely displaced out of India via scholarly debates.

This idea that east doesn’t believe in self is hokum

jimsimmons··on Google doesn’t want employees working remotely anymore
Sam Altman?
jimsimmons··on Google doesn’t want employees working remotely anymore
Definitely. I didn’t mean Americans are toxic. Workplace makes them different people though
jimsimmons··on Google doesn’t want employees working remotely anymore
Culture and nationality are different things. Competitiveness and toxicity go hand in hand
jimsimmons··on Google doesn’t want employees working remotely anymore
Entire SV VC sphere wants people in the office grinding
jimsimmons··on Google doesn’t want employees working remotely anymore
Europeans or literally anyone else are nicer workplace people.

American Corp culture is toxic af. Money thirst, shameless self promotion, competition etc really make you anxious all the time.

jimsimmons··on A confession exposes India’s hacking industry
In my college Infosys was always seen as the option only slightly better than unemployment. Actually this was not even the popular view by the time I left.
jimsimmons··on Popular Subreddits are organizing a strike on 2023-06-12 b/c high API prices
Very well articulated.
jimsimmons··on Chief executives cannot shut up about AI
Why wouldn’t capitalists drool over obedient, perpetual, cheap labour
jimsimmons··on Was modern art a CIA psy-op? (2020)
You think Van Gogh and Picasso are nonsense?

Or even Mondrian

jimsimmons··on OpenAI Employee: GPT-4 has been static since March
He’s talking about the API. Not the web client
jimsimmons··on Notes apps are where ideas go to die (2022)
Evernote context seemed great when I used it briefly with my premium subscription.

Bubbles up relevant notes automatically without having to link them like in Obsidian or something.

I think apart from that or an Anki like system there’s no way to solve this.

On the other hand maybe note taking is more about thinking and catalysing an idea and less about using in later

jimsimmons··on Ask HN: Is it just me or GPT-4's quality has significantly deteriorated lately?
OpenAI dev confirms that API models have not changed:

jimsimmons··on Lawyer cites fake cases invented by ChatGPT, judge is not amused
Well they had every opportunity to inspect its output. Where in the loop and what gets inspected is not an easy problem to solve.
jimsimmons··on Lawyer cites fake cases invented by ChatGPT, judge is not amused
You have no basis to make that claim.

My point was a lot more subtle: if someone asks things like “double check it”, “are you sure” you can provide a template “I’m just a LM” response.

I’m not expecting the model to know what it doesn’t know. I’m not sure some future GPT variant can either

jimsimmons··on Lawyer cites fake cases invented by ChatGPT, judge is not amused
In the loop there indeed was a allegedly trained human in this instance

They should RLHF this behaviour out.

Asking people to be aware of limitations is in similar vein as asking them to read ToC

jimsimmons··on Alpaca RLHF-ed to beat ChatGPT
You provide two samples side by side and see what humans prefer.

You should try asking what you don’t know in a non judgemental manner

jimsimmons··on Alpaca RLHF-ed to beat ChatGPT
The measure is win rate versus DV3. Their model wins more often than ChatGPT

Beating a weaker player more often is not evidence of being able to beat a stronger player on average though

jimsimmons··on Stability AI co-founder suing CEO

Good point. Edited

Cloud is doing pretty well. YouTube started making serious money. Pixel is a long term product line. Avoid metaberg-esque pivots towards crypto or VR

Very few businesses in the last 20 years that can compete with Google ad tech in scale and margins.
