jimbob21··on DOJ seizes $2.3M in cryptocurrency paid to the ransomware extortionists Darkside
If the key is solely located only in the hacker's brain, yes it is out of their reach. Usually, however, if you gain access to the hacker's comp, they'll have it written down somewhere.
jimbob21··on Google removes its head of diversity after 2007 blog post surfaces
Its even in the actual hyperlink. Trolls will be trolls.
jimbob21··on Had Covid? You’ll probably make antibodies for a lifetime
If she was out for a month and then again for a week, it sounds like a compromised immune system more than anything else, assuming she isn't elderly.
jimbob21··on Ask HN: Are you satisfied with Elixir or do you regret choosing Elixir?
Exactly. One of the MOST valid criticisms of a language is the way (or lack of ways) in which it can be used.
jimbob21··on Apple Readies MacBook Pro, MacBook Air Revamps
I'd argue it has much less to do with mac mini being any more important than the chip itself being important. They're probably trying to push it in every spot they can, and there is no sense in making more old chips if you can just put the new one in instead.
jimbob21··on Home ownership is the West’s biggest economic-policy mistake
If we had no grocery stores we would all own farms. Please stop providing these services
jimbob21··on Coinbase from YC to DPO
>Vanguard is managing $6+ T of actual assets; that's many times the total market cap of all cryptos.

Well, 3 times more.

>And now here's the question: if they had the same valuation, would you put your money on Vanguard or Coinbase?

Depends on what the bet is. For growth of stock price? Obviously coinbase. The company that is more likely to last another hundred years? Probably Vanguard.

jimbob21··on Intel 3rd gen Xeon Scalable (Ice Lake): generationally big, competitively small
Yes, quite simply they have fallen behind while also promising things they have failed to deliver. As an example, their most recent flagship release is the 11900k, which has 2 fewer cores (now 8) than its predecessor (had 10, 10900k), and almost no improvement to speak of otherwise (in some games its ~1% faster). On the other hand, AMD's flagship, which to be fair is $150 more expensive, has 16 cores, very similar clock speeds, and is much more energy efficient (intel and amd calculate TDP differently). Overall, AMD is the better choice by a large margin and Intel is getting flock because it sat on its laurels for the last decade(?) and hasn't done anything to improve itself.

To put it in numbers alone, look at this benchmark. Flagship vs Flagship: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i9-11900K-vs-AMD-...

jimbob21··on NFTP, the World’s First Non-Fungible Toilet Paper
You pay in Ethereum or another ERC-20 token, not BTC
jimbob21··on The Victims of the Eviction Moratorium
Except now people are literally choosing not to pay rent. And there are no consequences. So who wins in this scenario? The landlord is screwed over, and the house is taken by the bank. Then they sell it at a loss cause its filled with a useless nonpaying tenant and that bombs all the housing prices in the neighborhood. Millions of dollars will be lost, corporations will come out ahead, and everyone is worse off. Brilliant, this moratorium.
jimbob21··on WallStreetBets vs WallStreet: It's not about the money anymore
They're nearly the same thing in the hedge fund's case. Most of them take some variant of 2&20 still, so 20% of fund profits is their revenue.
jimbob21··on California Voters Exempt Uber, Lyft, DoorDash from Having to Reclassify Drivers
>The Assembly's job is to pass bills that positively benefit California as a state and as a society long-term.

While also ensuring that what they're passing is what members of their state want. If they're not sure, you should not pass that thing. If the state needs the benefits of that thing (and that need is backed by research), then they should go about finding another way to acquire the benefits that has public approval. That's the entire point of a democracy

jimbob21··on All systems go for UK’s £55M fusion energy experiment
How is what they just said any different than a standard nuclear reactor that just heats up water to produce steam into electricity?
jimbob21··on We chose Java for our high-frequency trading application
>but the nature of the industry is not wrong or evil, it's actually beneifical.

Can you prove how? Thats what the previous poster was asking.

>'Good ads' are a win for everyone.

Again, how? I don't like ads. I think they're annoying. They're not good for me.

I think you're drinking the koolaid.

jimbob21··on US college enrollments are falling, except for graduate degrees
>in fact most of the teaching in humanities is just assigning books to read

I don't know what college you went to, but at mine, reading was the homework, and the discussion on the books (even with the professor's inherent biases) in the class with my peers is what developed the profound thoughts and ideas that I still carry with me. Humanities might not contribute to jobs, (I'm STEM) but I don't for a second regret the philosophy classes I took.

jimbob21··on I overslept because iOS 14 disabled my alarm
You must have it on do not disturb. I exclusively keep my phone on silent (but within view) and have no problems answering calls because it pops up on the screen.
jimbob21··on One Year with ThinkPad and Linux (From MacBook Pro)
Can I get some laptop recommendations with similar specs (and most importantly battery time) as the MBP from you? I've been looking around for a new one.
jimbob21··on Jacques Cousteau’s grandson wants to build the ISS of the sea
That seems to be just a pool to mimic zero gravity, which I would not equate to the ISS in ocean form at all
jimbob21··on Optimal Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches
The last picture has both the peanut butter and banana slices.
jimbob21··on Secret gyms and the economics of prohibition
"More arrogant than putting other lives at risk because you can't put your routine on hold for a bit? No. It isn't."

This is the part I'm confused about. If gyms were open, people who's lives were at risk still wouldn't go to the gym. Only people who didn't care would go. They are consenting to the risk that would inherently come with it. It isn't the type of place that at risk people HAVE to go, so why shouldn't we open it for people that are fine with the consequences? Also, restaurants are all completely open for dine-in in many of the places that gyms have yet to open. How does that make any sense? No one magically stops breathing for the hour+ they're in the restaurant.

I think quarantine should be down to the individual and the rules they'd like to implement on their private property (including their business), but you've probably already gotten that by now.

jimbob21··on Remote work is reshaping San Francisco, as tech workers flee and rents fall
Finally a truthful comment. Everybody goes there to make money, that's it. There's nothing wrong with that, so why do people still try to pretend that isn't the reason when out of view of their employers?
jimbob21··on Boom supersonic jet readies for rollout

jimbob21··on Why I Quit Google to Work for Myself
Well that's the difference then, you were headhunted and they wanted you to stay. That isn't perceived disloyalty, it is the exact opposite: you wanted to stay there but be compensated the same way.
