jim_bailie··on V100 Server On-Prem vs. AWS P3 Instance Cost Comparison
Look, it was an informative piece and I'm glad I read it. I even book-marked it for future reference.

But let's be candid, It was a promotional piece as well and if I "owned" this forum I would certainly have something to gain by charging a modest fee for such placements. It may sound like I'm angry about this or have a negative feeling, but I don't; not at all.

jim_bailie··on V100 Server On-Prem vs. AWS P3 Instance Cost Comparison
Maybe not! I wonder how much if anything was paid for this placement. And I also wonder if I should be preparing an "article" about my company. We could sure use some extra exposure.

Anyway, despite my belly-aching, it was an interesting read.

jim_bailie··on Classic Mathematics Books for Lifelong Learners
As a primary guide to the subject, I would recommend "The Road to Reality" by Roger Penrose.
jim_bailie··on A proof that Unix utility sed is Turing complete
And I love Lazarus/FreePascal for those very reasons. A simple and very performant tool set that I use quite extensively for a set of mission critical quantitative financial analysis applications.
jim_bailie··on Office Space turns 20: How the film changed the way we work
I always felt that there should have been a sequel where Peter, Michael and Samir eventually reunited and started that company Penetrode.
jim_bailie··on Ask HN: What books changed the way you think about almost everything?
"Side Effects" by Woody Allen
jim_bailie··on Benchmarking 1M C# tasks vs. Go goroutines
Wow, a lot of interesting machinations. You've given me a few things to think about for sure. Thanks for the write-up!
jim_bailie··on Benchmarking 1M C# tasks vs. Go goroutines
This is an interesting and informative little benchmark. I'm sure a few things can be picked apart, but eh.

What am also interested in hearing about is the author's experience with building a web app with c# on Linux, or anyone else's experience for that matter. I really didn't know it was ever ported, but I don't get out much.

jim_bailie··on The TypeScript Tax
A thoughtful article this is. Heck, I like Typescript. I've used it in extensive experimentation and would gladly use it in production if a client or employer insisted on it.

Would I use Typescript for my own production use? Likely not. My perception is that it is yet another layer of complexity added to front-end development that, ultimately, does not need to be there.

jim_bailie··on Is a Serial-Killer Gang Murdering Young Men Across the U.S.?
I've not seen any indication of any "obnoxious and dishonest marketing campaign" on his part. All I know is that in his books he presents what I feel is very credible research and offers no conclusions.

The missing persons cases he examines are truly remarkable. I don't expect to persuade you of this, but I am responding to you for the possible benefit of anyone else who may be reading these remarks.

jim_bailie··on Goodbye, Trello
Is this an actual blog post or sponsored content or some hybrid of advertorial?
jim_bailie··on What People Say Before They Die
Yes! I like the way you think.
jim_bailie··on Ask HN: How to self-study mathematics from the undergrad through graduate level?
That was my $0.02 as someone who majored in Physics. You just gave $0.04. Good suggestions.
jim_bailie··on Is a Serial-Killer Gang Murdering Young Men Across the U.S.?
His books aren't cheap and I'm thinking he makes his living and supports his research from their sale.

I'm also thinking you have not read any of his books and really have nothing to say about his research or the circumstances of all the missing people that he is reporting on.

jim_bailie··on Ask HN: How to self-study mathematics from the undergrad through graduate level?
My $0.02: Make a goal to fully understand General Relativity as Einstein published it. Then work through the evolution of some of its mathematics.
jim_bailie··on Is a Serial-Killer Gang Murdering Young Men Across the U.S.?
Agreed.

If you're really interested in peeling back the layers of these stories, you're going to have to watch and read all the material published by David Paulides. Type "Missing 411" in your favorite search engine and watch him on the Youtube.

He is a long-time LEO and his books are incredibly well researched. They're not on Amazon and only available on his website.

Let me just say that this is some VERY strange sh%$t!

jim_bailie··on ‘A Minefield’: How Scholars Who Don’t Drink Navigate the Conference Social Scene
Let's not overthink this. If you don't want to drink alcohol get a soda and mingle and have some fun. Or do what I do: Get a seltzer water with a twist of lemon. Tastes refreshing and looks legit.
jim_bailie··on People older than 65 share the most fake news, a new study finds
Uh oh, you're getting grayed down. Get those critical thoughts out of your head at once and get back onto the reservation.
jim_bailie··on How Peter Jackson Made WWI Footage Seem Astonishingly New
That's remarkable. I'll be in an audience somewhere on the 27th.
jim_bailie··on How Ted Lieu Became Google’s Accidental Champion
You're darn right he became Google's champion. What a better champion than this flake who "would love to be able to regulate the content of speech,..."
jim_bailie··on WordPress 5.0: A Gutenberg FAQ
I up-voted you because you mentioned Processwire. Holy God is that a wonderful piece of work. We're getting ready to deploy an enormous amount of content using this platform and it's been a real pleasure working with it.
jim_bailie··on Where are they? Why I hope the search for ET life finds nothing (2008)
Never say never
jim_bailie··on Where are they? Why I hope the search for ET life finds nothing (2008)
What you claim is indeed so very sad, but I wouldn't gnash teeth or loose any sleep over it.
jim_bailie··on Where are they? Why I hope the search for ET life finds nothing (2008)
I wasn't positing faster than light travel, but rather a medium allowing a ftl transfer of information.
jim_bailie··on Where are they? Why I hope the search for ET life finds nothing (2008)
I don't know
jim_bailie··on Where are they? Why I hope the search for ET life finds nothing (2008)
All I know is that if we're going to locate or communicate with any other advanced civilization out there, it's sure not going to be with radio waves. It will be with something a little more subtle that may not necessarily be constrained by gravity or the speed of light. Just my $0.02
jim_bailie··on All of Life Is Creation: Jack Kerouac’s Art
So true. Kerouac was actually <gasp> conservative and quite religious.
jim_bailie··on GoAWK: an AWK interpreter written in Go
Ha! My interaction with AWK throughout the years has been a fuzz test in progress. Very interesting link though.

On the other hand, I think what you're saying about expanding a well known tool's range of use in new environments makes sense.

jim_bailie··on GoAWK: an AWK interpreter written in Go
I suppose I'm jaded. I've been writing software for so long and have been so underpaid for it, maybe I'm envious of your ability to follow through on your intellectually curiosity with such flourish. Anyway, great work. Looks good!
