jianshen··on Inside The Fine Art Factories of Yiwu, China
Takashi Murakami [1] is doing much the same with Kaikai Kiki [2]

I think a lot of people (especially artists) don't realize or maybe don't like that in order for an artist to scale, they have to bring in help. As much as it sounds like the commercialization of a craft, I think these structures are important for the art economy to survive in this modern era of on-demand everything.

We try our hardest to make it work for the right candidates. A valid F1 is doable.

jianshen··on Toonz Goes Open Source
Anyone here in the animation industry used this before? Looking forward to March 26th!
jianshen··on How to Pass a Programming Interview
When I interview, I usually ask pseudocode first, then write it out in actual code. Think of it like writing a short essay. Outline first, then actually write the essay with proper grammar to the best of your ability. There will be typos and grammatical mistakes which I don't really care about but I do want to see your style and how you use the language to express what you want it to do.
jianshen··on Show HN: Venture Dealr – Visualize and turn the knobs on VC financing concepts
I wish more fresh grads and folks new to startups understood these concepts, particularly around how preferences work and that you can't just multiply # of shares by strike price given all of these considerations.

Great job on elucidating these concepts!

jianshen··on The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, a public live-in high school
Mental and Social development is a huge thing to consider here (for all you parents considering your kids for a school like this). You're introduced to college level independence at a ridiculously young age (don't forget the shmen...) and while the academics is top notch, campus life can be challenging to anyone at that age, even if you get to go home on weekends. That said, you'll likely make some pretty remarkable friends for life there...
jianshen··on Ask HN: The Internet is getting lame. What's next?
+1! I've met some of the most creative "weirdos" in the maker community and in particular the "hacker spaces" [1] around the world. Hacker spaces aren't as numerous however but I love that people have been organizing more and more mini maker faires [2] all over the world.

jianshen··on Early Japanese Animations: The Origins of Anime (1917-1931)
The simple explanation for all of this is that western audiences regard Animation as a medium solely for consumption by children. Disney/Pixar will likely always produce animated films for children first compared to Anime which produces films for all audiences.

"The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness" [1] is a documentary worth watching if you've seen any Studio Ghibli films. The opinion of Miyazaki is that Animation is a more freeing medium than traditional film. It's available on Netflix right now for those who have access.

jianshen··on Websites Prep for Google’s ‘Mobilegeddon’
As a front-end dev, I'm really curious about this. If you're using a native mobile app, do you expect the UI to zoom in on text inputs as well? Is that a common UI behavior?

I've always been a fan of moving mobile web towards the standards and behaviors of native apps which generally did not require zooming to get tasks done.

jianshen··on Game of Thrones leak and watermark: a stupid tracking system
+1 for enjoying scheduled programming.

I don't believe this model will ever go away because of things like live sports. You can't "on demand" a live basketball game and part of the joy is enjoying the results unfold together.

jianshen··on Introducing Messenger Platform and Businesses on Messenger
Y! Messenger monetized branded themes. National advertisers would pay for the experiences, users got to pick from branded backgrounds and emoticons. Chris Szeto, then Y! Messenger head, pioneered this revenue model. It was quite lucrative but then WebIM became a thing (a la Meebo) and the market shifted away from Desktop downloads. FF a few more years and we see Mobile eat WebIMs lunch. The cycle continues...

Thanks for the kind words about Meebo! I miss it a lot as well, particularly the people. P)

jianshen··on Introducing Messenger Platform and Businesses on Messenger
While I agree that all of these ideas have been thought of prior to the Asian chat apps, it's largely the similarity in execution that FB Messenger is taking compared to WeChat/ Line/KakaoTalk that the parent is talking about.

One important thing that the Asian messengers have executed better than the others is monetization of IM, something which has eluded Western messengers for a long time. To this day, FB still doesn't charge $$ for its stickers. Meanwhile, Line reported earnings of $600M+ and WeChat $900M+ from stickers/games/ads last year [1]. I think that's what has FB's attention.

jianshen··on My internship on the Khan Academy iOS team
Wonderful write-up and I'm happy to see some details and work that didn't make it into production get some attention here. It's often those exercises that we discard that make us better at what we do.

Sounds like a stellar internship!

jianshen··on How We Did It: SNL Title Sequence
I'm really happy to see a post like this on HN. Pulling off creative in-camera shots like these are a million times more rewarding for some reason than creating/editing them in post. There's something visceral about getting the shot right in the moment.
jianshen··on HP 3D printing
Anybody working on this project here? I'm genuinely curious if they've invented some new photopolymer resin that cures faster.

Current 3D Printers need to make the same leap as desktop printers did from dot matrix to laser in speed and fidelity to really change peoples' minds about their utility.

Either way, congrats HP on diving into the deep end of the pool here.

jianshen··on Magic Leap Secures $542M Led by Google
Strangely enough, the kind of immersive experience technology that Magic Leap is developing might just help with that problem.
jianshen··on Lapham's Quarterly
Lapham's Quarterly is another example of print never going away (though it may become a niche one day like vinyl records). Their attention to physical detail in paper, ink and illustration gives each issue a tangible value that's hard to replicate in the digital world no matter how "interactive" you might make it.
jianshen··on Reddit
I most often discover new subreddits by clicking "Other discussions" on links that I particularly like. That's how I discovered /r/artisanvideos.

I'd love to see those related subreddit threads (possibly sorted by activity) be surfaced more visually when I visit a comments page to find our more about it. Just an anecdote but I feel like you guys have a lot of data to play with.

jianshen··on Fighting to Honor a Father’s Last Wish: To Die at Home
I would add that it's not just end-of-life decisions that we ignore or fear but anything long term or non-acute. Modern medicine is geared towards getting better quickly but there are certain ailments, be it old age, a traumatic brain injury or mental illness, that we're absolutely terrible at dealing with. It's not that people are not willing to put in the years (as is demonstrated by the brave woman in this article) but that the learnings and breakthroughs for long term illnesses takes generations, not years and sadly we're barely at the starting line.

Please thank your mother for everything that she does for her patients and thank you for sharing.

jianshen··on I Had a Stroke at 33
There will be things that your insurance plan will just randomly decide not to cover or worse, you just don't have the right kind of insurance for what you need.

Both my parents have suffered strokes. My father had to go to a step down unit which requires Long Term Care Insurance, something that I'm willing to bet most people aren't familiar with. Even that, due to changing regulations, your LTCI that you purchased decades ago most likely no longer covers today's prices. Unfortunately you just can't prepare for everything.

jianshen··on Commander Keen source code released
This just caused a rush of nostalgia from a generation of PC computing that seems like a lifetime ago.

Norton Commander, Jazzy the Jack Rabbit, TheDraw, the Gravis Gamepad...

jianshen··on Hyperlapse, Instagram's new video stabilization app
For folks who haven't seen the Hyperlapse technique before, here's a great example of the style done professionally blended with traditional timelapse:

jianshen··on A Single Div
This was really fun challenging myself not to look at the source and thinking thru how I would do each one myself. Things are not as hierarchical as you might expect. Great job!
jianshen··on Commencement address by Bill and Melinda Gates
Actually I think that's the point of the speech. A lot of folks (not just college grads) aren't aware of how lucky they are and are perhaps even more unaware that they have the ability to do anything.
jianshen··on Mario Maker: Create Your Own Super Mario Levels
Are the Mii's not considered user made content? In the upcoming Super Smash Bros', you can customize your own Mii to be a fighter and it looks like there's a whole community of Mii customizers [1] who make celebrities and the like.

jianshen··on New Entry Level 21.5-inch iMac
Having been that "help" for many years for parents and grandparents, I can guarantee you that having a setup with as few components and cables as possible that break is more for my sanity than for their comfort. As folks get a little bit older and less nimble, random cables get pulled and drinks get spilled on keyboards.
jianshen··on How did we get so busy?
I think this is something a lot of people miss. I actually think it's ok to say you're busy even if that time is spent staring at a wall and I hate that people should feel guilty for wanting that. Cheers for knowing that you need these things to keep sane.
jianshen··on Three.js Interview: Online 3D Modeling and Rendering With Clara.io
Fantastic! I did a quick one over of the docs but didn't think to look there.
