jhot··on Orange Pi Neo Coming as a Ryzen 7 and Linux Powered Handheld Device
I recently went down this rabbit hole. I bought a controller and mount for playing emulated games on my phone and then started seeing references to various handheld emulation devices. The amount of options from $50-200 is insane and I think my kids will love one of the switch-like devices that can play a ton of retro games.
jhot··on Lie About Your Birthday
This is the way. The more who join, the less of an outlier we become.
jhot··on The Orange Pi 5 Plus
The brand is GenMachine. Bought from Newegg and shipped from china so you can probably just order from their website
jhot··on The Orange Pi 5 Plus
I recently bought a mini pc with an AMD 5500u (6 cores, 12 threads, 15W), 16 GB DDR4, and a 512 GB nvme SSD for $225 (on sale a bit). I suspect it would run laps around the orange pi despite the similar price and wattage.
jhot··on I built an offline smart home
All the switches I've bought are different from normal ones. They are always in a central position and you push on the top for on and bottom for off. Some are also just a single button and pressing it toggles the light.
jhot··on How Australia’s ‘Bluey’ conquered children’s entertainment
Definitely one of my favorites and gets me emotional every time. I can only hope my kids have the same empathy and awareness as Rusty.

The Grandad episode also hits hard as my parents age and I see them only a few times a year.

jhot··on 7 watts idle – building a low powered server/NAS on Intel 12th/13th gen
I'm running truenas on a used e3 1245 v5 ($30 on ebay) and an Asus workstation Mobo with 32 GB ECC and 4 spinning drives. Not sure individually, but the nas along with a i5 12400 compute machine, router, and switch use 100W from the wall during baseline operation (~30 containers). I'd consider that hugely efficient compared to some older workstations I've used as home servers.
jhot··on Cheapest and Most Expensive Appliances to Run Each Year
After buying my house, the first hot month caused some panic when I got the electricity bill. I quickly ordered a zwave thermostat that I could control and wrote some quick code to optimize my costs a bit.

1. Dial the temperature back quite a bit during peak hours and just run the central fan. 2. Get alerts when the outside temperature is above or below the internal temperature (so I open/close windows at optimal times). 3. Pre-cool the house outside of peak hours.

Additionally I close vents downstairs during the summer, and use a box fan blowing outward at night. Those things brought my bill down over $50 each summer month.

Now if I could just get my trees to grow faster...

jhot··on A data corruption bug in OpenZFS?
My cheap solution for large datasets is to buy a raspberry pi and external hard drive(s), setup in a friend or relatives house, and setup syncthing. One friend has a copy of my ripped discs, my parents have copies of my photos, etc. Make sure the remote instance is in read only mode.

For sensitive data I would run something else that can be a Restic target so backup data is encrypted, I currently use a cloud drive that supports WebDAV for that.

jhot··on Windows and macOS targeted by new Go-based malware
I would love to know if they've found a way to monitor the clipboard without cgo so I can make a side project of mine easier to cross compile.
jhot··on A warrant showing the U.S. government is monitoring push notifications
Already had ntfy set up and took the time to setup MollySocket so I can get signal notifications without firebase or a dedicated websocket connection (even if no message data is included). Here's to hoping more apps are brought on board.

I also love ntfy for its general handiness.

jhot··on Show HN: Rot - Offline secrets management
I just setup sops for a personal project today and wished it was slightly more opinionated much like this (I also like the age reference in your readme). Will definitely give this a go.
jhot··on Ask HN: What are some unpopular technologies you wish people knew more about?
I used to do some professional services work, and magic wormhole was one of the most reliable ways for me to get files to clients who's companies blocked traditional file sharing hosts like Dropbox and Google Drive.
jhot··on Cicadas are so loud, fiber optic cables can ‘hear’ them
They were called locusts in my area as well. Wasn't until college zoology that I learned we were calling them the wrong thing.

Anyways, I had a dog that would watch from the back porch and when he saw one flying low across the back yard would run out and catch it out of mid air. The things would be flapping and croaking about until they were crushed mid-swallow. It was a gross but impressive feat to behold.

jhot··on A rural post office was told to prioritize Amazon packages. Chaos ensued
I used to live in a small mountain town. The official vehicles were ancient so any time there was snow I'd see the carriers in Tacomas or Jeeps with a magnetic US Mail decal on the side. They also modified their routes slightly to accommodate left side steering wheels.
jhot··on Ask HN: What are you passionate about at the moment?
I love bikes and was going to comment about them so I'll just tack on to your comment.

Built a single speed out of a cheap, used frame with some spare or cheap parts and it has been going strong with little maintenance for 14 years.

Also have a long-tail cargo ebike that I got this summer and already have over 500 miles on it. It can be faster than driving a lot of times on top of being more fun for me and my kids.

And to top it off a full suspension mountain bike (2018 YT Jeffsy) which I get out on about twice a week and is really great for my physical/mental state, and has a huge skill ceiling so there will always be something to strive to get better at. Just got back from a weekend off riding an area with huge granite boulders and slabs with a few friends. Really fun to attempt features that made us a little uncomfortable and build skills/confidence.

jhot··on Disc Brakes Took over the Cycling World. Here's Why That Was a Mistake
I'm with the op, once you get used to servicing hydraulic I find them easier in many regards and require less frequent adjusting.

Sure if you get a leak on trail you're screwed, but that has happened to one bike one time in my riding group over the last 10+ years. I will be happy to have a cable-free bike someday.

jhot··on Paperless-ngx – Open source document management system
docker-compose --env-file .env exec postgres /usr/bin/pg_dump -U postgres "$db_name" | gzip -9 > "$BACKUP_ROOT/postgres/${NOW}.${db_name}.sql.gz"
jhot··on Should you buy or build tools for your business?
I knew this would be some plug for a low code platform. Does anyone have success with low code? From my brief exposure, low code == basically coding but slower and with extreme guardrails.
jhot··on Caddy is the first and only web server to use HTTPS automatically and by default
I do this at home. The labels are generally much simpler than traefik.

labels:

  caddy: subdomain.${DOMAIN_NAME}

  caddy.reverse_proxy: "{{upstreams 8000}}"
jhot··on Why are our keyboard not wireless?
To give a positive response in the sea of negativity, I'm very happy with my all wireless setup. I have a keyboard (Nuphy) and mouse (Razer) that can switch between Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz. I connect to my work laptop via BT and gaming PC via 2.4. No issues with latency for me even in twitchy shooters.

I have a BT headset for work but do wire it in while gaming and have a USB mic.

Really nice to be able to switch between two computers without a KVM.

jhot··on Amazon CEO reportedly told remote employees: It’s probably not going to work out
I have a friend who has worked remotely for Amazon for a few years. He now has to ride a bus to the nearest office (1.5 hours away), meanwhile the rest of the teammated are at different offices. What a waste.
jhot··on Self-driving cars less likely to detect children and people of color
Why guess depth from images when you can know depth?
jhot··on Ask HN: Best WFH Purchases?
My dog of 15.5 years passed away recently and I thought I would allow a few months to grieve and experience life without a pet. 2 weeks later and I got another dog. Very nice to have something around and a good excuse for a couple walks throughout the day.

Otherwise I recommend decent speakers (I have a pair of Sonos Era 100s). I don't have many meetings besides the daily standup so filling the silence with some nice sounding music really helps me get in the groove.

jhot··on Ask HN: Underrated music, books, movies?
There is a band named From Indian Lakes and their 2nd and 3rd albums (Able Bodies and Absent Sounds) are masterpieces of indie rock.
jhot··on Comparing Windows uninstallers, getting upset and then deciding to make my own
It's been many years but I used to be in charge of the installers for a small company. WIX was an incredible gift compared to InstallShield and company but it did have a steep learning curve. Much easier to do as I pleased in CI/CD though.

In regards to the exe wrappers, handy for bundling dependencies but also useful for elevating permissions in ways you can't do in a standard MSI which only allows elevated permissions during certain stages of the install.

jhot··on Driving is more expensive than you think (2020)
I ride year round with my 2 kids in Colorado as long as the roads are decent. I wouldn't ride main roads with them when the bike lanes are crowded with snow but there are plenty of neighborhood routes and bike paths around town.
jhot··on Show HN: Linkwarden – An open source collaborative bookmark manager
Linkding does support header auth if your provider supports that (I run authelia backed by ldap).
jhot··on If we want a shift to walking we need to prioritize dignity
I live in the US in a "platinum rated" bike city (so there are a relatively high amount of bike commuters) and have gone through drive throughs on my bike a handful of times. Every time I have been served but told not to do it again.
jhot··on Open Source Outdoor Air Quality Monitor
One of the Plantowers in my purple air has died and the power supply is flaking out as well. Think I'll grab one of these as a replacement.
