jherdman··on Use Rails
What are you using for your ORM? Last I checked Prisma is the new hotness, but it's testing story is frankly unacceptable (i.e. manual DB purges, https://www.prisma.io/docs/orm/prisma-client/testing/integra...).
jherdman··on The Reddits
I'm in the same boat. I only ever log in periodically to see what's going on with r/AskHistorians, and then promptly run away.
jherdman··on GitHub Actions could be so much better
FYI garden.io’s landing page appears to be broken on iOS. It runs off the page to the right.
jherdman··on SvelteKit 1.0
I'd love to hear about your testing story with Prisma. I recently looked into it but was disappointed to see the recommended approach was more or less to nuke the contents of the DB (https://www.prisma.io/docs/guides/testing/integration-testin...) instead of just rolling back a named transaction at the end of a test (a la https://hexdocs.pm/ecto_sql/Ecto.Adapters.SQL.Sandbox.html, or just about every other framework I've used with Ruby or Elixir).
jherdman··on Ask HN: Can anyone share cases study of successful SaaS getting into the market?
I just checked your comment and submission history but couldn’t find anything.
jherdman··on Ask HN: Best books read in 2022?
This is fantastic. I'm a relatively new parent, and I really feel like I could use some of these materials. Thank you for sharing.
jherdman··on Ask HN: Any good black Friday deals?
Hot lead! Thanks for sharing
jherdman··on Ask HN: What is the most impactful thing you've built?
My first web app was a del.icio.us clone, it helped me get started as a web dev. I still write clones of it when testing new web tech. Many thanks!
jherdman··on Is Rust Ready for the Web Yet? (2020)
It sounds like you've found your weekend project ;)
jherdman··on A Replacement for Strong Parameters
Because a well crafted response could write whatever they wanted to your DB as you’ve given the client too much control.

If I know, for instance, an admin is identified by an `is_admin` flag, I could add this to the allowed params and send my flag. Bam. I’m now an admin.

I know the example is a bit simplistic, but it wouldn’t take long to comb your app for a real world example where this would be problematic.

jherdman··on Remote startups will win the war for top talent
I’ve been remote a little over 9 years now. When I read a message that sounds a bit hostile, or the tone sounds a bit off, I reread it in an intentionally happy voice. Sometimes this helps me reframe it. Failing this I simply reach out on a video call.
jherdman··on Using Nix on macOS
Something not mentioned here is that each and every single macOS update will break your Nix install too. This is, by far, the most frustrating part of using Nix on macOS.
jherdman··on Vim Color Schemes
(Neo)Vim and colour schemes are the thing that finally pushed me to use VSCode after more than a decade of using Vim. I was just so fed up with trying to find the right incantations of environment variables to get the damn things to work correctly every single time. Hats off to those still fighting the good fight.
jherdman··on We have jetpacks and we do not care
> Humans evolutionarily think about movement with a 2 dimensional mindset because for much of our history we only needed to think about 2d movement.

Citation required? If you hang out with a child you quickly discover that their world is quite three dimensional. Heck, climbing is a fast growing sport. Again, three dimensional. We're made to run, jump, and climb. Three dimensional.

jherdman··on I was terrified of an eyeball injection
I'm very sympathetic to the author. I had to take a few breaks reading this article. Eye damage, things coming close to my eyes, or needles near my eyes are pure nightmare fuel as long as I can remember. "Fire in the Sky"'s experiment scene really pushed this over the edge for me as a child. I still get queasy thinking about it.
jherdman··on Stripe is kick-starting market for carbon removal
> Climate tech (ie hardware and software solutions) is a bad fit for VC money outside of carbon accounting software (which adds little value) benefits.

Can you elaborate on this assertion?

jherdman··on Is nuclear power our best bet against climate change?
You can't ship solar power to remote places that need power in the way you would a barrel of oil, or coal. We also don't have batteries that are up to the job of storing power.
jherdman··on How we got to LiveView
Thank you for your response, Chris. It's much appreciated!
jherdman··on How we got to LiveView
Hi Chris.

We've been using LiveView to build a new app at Precision Nutrition and are largely quite happy with it so far.

One concern we keep coming back to is that of the need for constant connectivity in order for the app to work. I'll throw up the disclaimer here that I've not spike on how to handle network disconnects. That said, we've had a few of our internal users lose their connection to the web socket, and the app just beach balls. You can't do anything. Another example we keep coming back to is a user going onto a subway.

How do you envision spotty connections being handled long term?

jherdman··on Yarn 3.0
It's basically not supported in Ember yet, so.... Not at all. My fingers are crossed for pnpm support soon so I can be done with the sadness pile that has been yarn as of late (e.g. linking just flat out doesn't work for us with Ember addons).
jherdman··on The Human Side of Elixir
I did this twice this year at my current job. Each time I made a case for introducing something new and interesting (Typescript, and Elixir). It took some convincing, and finding the right projects to introduce these technologies, but it happened. The result is that I've shipped four projects with Typescript, and am in the middle of delivering a greenfield Phoenix (with LiveView) app.
jherdman··on History of RSpec
Having used RSpec and Cucumber for quite a number of years, and on quite a number of projects I think that, were I to (begrudgingly) start a greenfield Ruby project tomorrow I'd stick with MiniTest out of the box. I'm done with RSpec's extensive and seemingly magic API, and Cucumber's promises are hollow — business is not quite to write specs.

I firmly believe that Elixir's ExUnit mostly got it right: `refute` and `assert` — that's it. I do miss nested context's and describes though.

jherdman··on Starting a TypeScript Project in 2021
TSLint is deprecated in favour of ESLint. See https://palantir.github.io/tslint/.
jherdman··on Nix is the ultimate DevOps toolkit
We're using Nix packages at Precision Nutrition to manage our dev environments: https://github.com/PrecisionNutrition/pndev/. It's been enormously successful. I highly recommend it.
jherdman··on I hope work from home continues
Our company implements Holacracy which largely solves this problem.
jherdman··on I hope work from home continues
I've been at a remote-first company for nine years now. I'll go back to an office as an absolute last resort. All of the wins the author described just begin to touch the surface of what's available to you. Once you can do your work even slightly asynchronously the quality of life improvements are just too overwhelming to go back.
jherdman··on I hope work from home continues
I can't help cynically read that as challenges with management, not the creative process itself.
jherdman··on Statement on New York Times Article
> ...they have been overly focused on their agenda...

Can you elaborate on this? What is their agenda?

jherdman··on Todo List for Vim
> ... wouldn't it be a better option to rely on python scripting by providing a plugin API

NeoVim is using Lua for this very reason. It fits the bill nicely, and is quite fast.

jherdman··on Rollerball Pens of 2021
I definitely agree with this. I've noticed that the more time I spend away from handwriting the worse my handwriting gets. The only way to improve is to write more. As a developer, this is sadly not something I get much opportunity to do throughout the day.
