jhart99··on The need to reform the National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding process
This captures the problem I have with this system. The wasted effort is absolutely immense. Rejected grants do come back with comments so you can try to fix the perceived problems. You can also consult with the NIH about how you can improve. But sometimes your idea is just not going to get funded.

The current pay line is about 12%. On average a researcher is going to end up failing 7/8 times. They are going to waste years of effort going back and forth to get a single R01. I don't remember the statistics but it is something like 8-10 years for a new professor to land their first R01. At my institute, you are basically required to have 2 R01 grants to keep things running. That means your job is not to do science at all, but to be a grant writing machine that gets enough funding so your lab can do whatever it is you want to do. On some level academic science is really marketing your brand of science.

As a NIH funded researcher, everything here is spot on.

I think the issue with some of this documentation is that for other packages, the function documentation is largely self contained. If I look up glm() it tells me how to use glm(). However, for ggplot2 there is an assumption that you have some level of knowledge of how the pieces should be strung together. So when I know I want a boxplot, and I find geom_boxplot() documentation it wonderfully describes the options for itself, and gives examples for it's use. But sometimes it doesn't give a good idea of the context of how the other pieces might interact. It makes complete sense if you read the book and just want to refresh your memory, but if you are coming in as a new user it really can be difficult to use the documentation exclusively.
jhart99··on UCLA hiring Asst. Adjunct Professor “on a without salary basis” (PhD required)
There are limited exceptions for interns as well, but those cannot replace a paid position and must be enrolled in a school at which they will receive credit for the internship.

I'm really wondering what this job posting is about as well.

jhart99··on Deliberately optimizing for harm
I've also worked in chemistry research labs and there are certain compounds (in the US) at least that will need approval. Anything on the DEA precursor list will do it. There are certain chemicals that are dual use for chemical weapons and chemotherapy synthesis (things to make melphalan for example). Those required some extra forms to order.

Somewhere I have a pair of Google "I'm Feeling Lucky" boxers and a Napster t-shirt. For older things, I have a Sun Microsystems koozie in an absolutely hideous purple and gold color.

Not to mention the net of seismographs across the US. Those would tell us within our own borders if a nuclear detonation has occurred within seconds of impact.
jhart99··on How to set up a blog with Hugo and Cloudflare, and why you should
I think it is because the container it spins up is a bit heavy. When you select a framework, it just sets a build command. It seems as though every framework and tool is installed in that build container.

I have used this for Chinese and English bilingual websites and it works very well once you get the hang of it.
jhart99··on Ask HN: Alternate Email hosting to G Suite
I do this with ImprovMx. You set up the inbound to forward to some other address. For outbound you can either pay them or set up GMail to do outbound aliasing. It works fine for me, but there is some lag on inbound emails.

This has also been my experience. Google One will get you to the right person to get things fixed. I had a billing issue that they were able to resolve in under 24 hours. But I could see the problem if your account gets banned that has the Google One on it... Would be hard to submit a request when you can't log in.
jhart99··on Smart kids should skip high school (2015)
I totally understand that sentiment. I agree people don't need to be particularly smart to do it too. I started with math classes that would normally be considered remedial and it was amazing. It let me zoom through what would be normal high school level math in about a year.

But too many people doing it would just turn it into High School 2.0 or worse if it turned into another competition among the smart high school kids.

jhart99··on Smart kids should skip high school (2015)
You can't take a GED in California until you are 18. I didn't bother getting one until the pandemic because it mostly doesn't matter. I just finally went and did the tests so that I wouldn't have an awkward blank spot on certain funding applications.
jhart99··on Smart kids should skip high school (2015)
By selecting the community college, I was just like any other student. I just had a regular counselor who made sure that I was picking at least 12 units that went toward my different GE categories or toward my intended major(originally EE, but switched to chemistry). Otherwise I was free to choose anything I wanted and did choose a lot of classes that didn't exactly fit with my plan, but were interesting to me.
jhart99··on Smart kids should skip high school (2015)
I did this. Let me tell you my experience.

I grew up in the outskirts of LA where there is a mix of farmland and people willing to drive a long way into LA. My family moved there because of the military and i had previously been in a "good" school, but this area was more than 50% the children of farm workers and they had really been screwed by fate. Most didn't speak English and the school system was constantly struggling to get them to learn enough English so they could understand the other subjects.

Anyway, by junior high, I had worked out a deal with my school that I could take some classes at the local community college and not take them at junior high. So rather than take Algebra I or whatever I would take a math class at the college. Well... by the end of 8th grade I had taken the first two calculus semesters.

When transferring to college I should have gone to one of two particularly bad high schools and it make things worse, the high schools were not going to allow me to take any college classes. I would start in high school at algebra II.

So I dropped out. At the time in California, you were able to select a community college as your high school. This is sadly no longer the case. I took all the classes I needed to fill in my general education requirements and took STEM classes I would need to transfer to a CSU or UC school. I didn't take things too seriously. I took whatever classes looked interesting including SCUBA, TV production and some music classes. I finished with everything needed to transfer at 16 and transferred to Calpoly. I finished with my BS in Chemistry at 19. Took a year off because I didn't know what I wanted to do. Worked at a winery as an analytical chemist which was loads of fun. After a year there, I decided I needed a PhD if I wanted to do research and did that at Caltech.

Personally, I believe this worked out fine for me. The people at the community college especially in STEM classes were great. I had and made friends along the way. Going to high school would have been a step down and a step back for me, but I don't think skipping high school is for everyone.

jhart99··on Rejected internal job applicants are twice as likely to quit
I have been that external candidate. I saw a random job on USAjobs a few years ago that really seemed to fit all of my experience so I figured I would apply for the heck of it. Within a few hours the listing was withdrawn. Weird. Then the same thing popped up again and again over the next couple of weeks and I would apply and it was immediately withdrawn again.

Good to know what was really going with that now.

jhart99··on 65k fake students applied for financial aid in wide community college scam
You could just go down the 10 to Santa Monica community college though even if you didn't want to travel. I think the extension is more about someone putting 'UCLA' on a resume or job application.

If you live in California, use the CCPA to figure out what they have on you and then submit a deletion request.
jhart99··on Philippine ethnic group has most Denisovan DNA
I remember a really good issue of national geographic that I read as a kid that talked all about this. Level is a bit higher but they showed how they have found evidence through bones and dated them in different ways and how they reconstructed different parts of the evolution to modern Homo sapiens.
jhart99··on Philippine ethnic group has most Denisovan DNA
They give confidence intervals in the text for about 51 MB(mega bases) which would be about 2 percent or so if that was across the whole mappable genome. Just a note that does not translate to 2% different genes or something, but rather that specific mutations they know can be traced back to a specific population. Most would have no effect.

I also just got the full screen ad on the phone app. I've been a YouTube subscriber for ages and this is the first time I have had an ad like this. I agree it is BS even if YouTube doesn't think it is an ad, it definitely was an ad.
jhart99··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
I think this is something that is really under appreciated. When there is inherited property, the cost-basis is reset to when the parents died and the Prop 13 basis is also inherited now if it becomes their primary residence. This is a huge advantage for those people who happen into this sort of situation.

jhart99··on California Passes Regulation Banning "Dark Patterns" Under Landmark Privacy Law
Does it really matter though? In my experience, the CA attorney general fails to enforce even flagrant violations of the CCPA. All you get is a form letter when you report a violation.

Some examples I have collected: non-response to requests, spamming the email address used for a request, failure to disclose specific pieces of personal information, etc. The best one I had was a letter from Experian where they had everything redacted even my address.
