jguimont··on Finding My Next Bootstrapped Business Idea
I would like to know your opinion on "When to drop the ball when trying to build a business?" You need to persevere, but like playing poker, you invested so much energy that it might be hard to pull the plug. Success might be just around the corner...
jguimont··on Google Stadia uses Style Transfer ML to change video game art in real time
Throw in a VR headset and you got Ready Player One.
jguimont··on How to drive in India (2015)
And that is why when I went there for business, my company insisted on hiring a driver for the whole month. He was a phone call away and was driving me all over the place, anywhere I wanted.

(that's also why most politician or people in high places get a driver)

jguimont··on In Georgia, a legal battle over electronic vs. paper voting
I do not understand why paper ballot would be difficult to achieve, that is the easiest to do!

I never voted in the US, but the system seems overly complex for such a simple exercice. Here in Canada, we have a paper ballot (http://www.elections.ca/vot/yth/stu/gui/images/dxsmp1-e.jpg), which is pretty simple. The vote is done, the stub is tallied and 2 people need to verify the vote before dropping it in a sealed box. When the polls close, the votes are counted, by multiple persons, by hand. Nothing electronic.

... and there is a single vote at a time, no votes on laws when electing representative, etc. That is just non sense.

jguimont··on Two French rivers disappear underground in cracks and sinkholes
It says 13 days ago, but the linked video is from 2012?!
jguimont··on Machine learning can run on tiny, low-power chips
Of course it should... :P

Neurones are electrical but mostly chemical when they work. The average speed of a connection from one neurone 0.1-0.5 m/s. So if you hit your toe on a chair and you are 1.8m meter high (and pardon my rough math/science here) it would take almost 1 second to reach your brain (of course this is why reflexes are handled close to the spine and not the brain).

And now imagine the complexe processing that is required to view/ear and recognize something. It is done quite quickly and yet the basic processing unit of the brain is slow. One might think it is the massive parallelism of the brain that makes this possible so quickly, but even there if you think about it it all that processing done in such small amount of time cannot be more than a thousand operations...

jguimont··on Do not use NPM 5.7
I believe that node is installed with npm and both are installed in system directories. I think they should by default point the npm global directory to the user dir and not a system dir.
jguimont··on Do not use NPM 5.7
I am the one who reported this ;) In fact that was a single production server that I tried to reinstall 3 times before catching it was not really one of the commits that was doing this. No data was lost or connectivity (as long as you do not reboot it), you just lose any ssh connection/login.

Should I have done this on a staging server? Sure, but that does not change the fact that I would have had to rebuild the whole server there too. It is not expected that updating npm will kill the complete system it is on... It would be expected to have some deploy failure of some sort.

As previously noted, `npm update -g npm` pulls in version 5.7.0. Version 5.6 is still the latest but for some obscure reason if you have thisupdate anywhere in your deploy script you are screwed.

jguimont··on As of today, no US passenger airlines operate the Boeing 747
Well, there is Air Force One that is a modified 747 and both are still flying.
jguimont··on IBM contract cost for failure-plagued Phoenix payroll system jumped to $185M

jguimont··on Nintendo Switch – New Video Game System [video]
The video/gallery shows a gamecard and gamecard plug. Maybe there is no estore.
jguimont··on Yarn – A new package manager for JavaScript
If you look at ruby there is "gem" that you could equal to "npm". On top of that there is "bundler" that is you could equal to "yarn".

It is the same pattern.

jguimont··on The meaning of trust in the age of Airbnb
This reminds me of my philosophy classes. Rousseau believed all human are fundamentally good vs Machiavelli which thought people will act narcissistically and you need leverage on them to make them behave.

Trust vs non trust. We vs I. The futur vs the present.

jguimont··on Turbochargers Will Keep Getting Better
Ford 2.7 Ecoboost and 3.5 V6 are used on the F-150, which is not your regular car. It is however one of the most popular truck in north america (1st I believe), outselling cars in most states.

jguimont··on React Performance
His Vanilla examples is exactly what Ember.js does because it already knows which data changed and to which node it was linked to so it will diff the vDOM only for those.

I would love to see the same comparison with Ember.js in the mix.

jguimont··on Narrowing a residential street – McAllister
You have to change all trucks to accomodate such a street. Firefighters, paramedics, even some cops have cars/trucks that are too wide to fit those streets. There is a huge difference in size between european and american fire trucks. Paramedics and some firefighters in europe use something like a Sprinter or Transit, both of which are narrower and smaller than their american counter part.
jguimont··on Well, We Failed – Wattage is shutting down
I built the Timbuk2.com bag customizer (http://timbuk2.com/customizer) and I would say that 50% of their business is on the custom side. People are playing with the product and often they surprise us. Timbuk2 ends up charging a premium for the custom bag, but it a unique bag.

Same applies to Nikeid or adidas or converse or ... A lot of people are trying to build custom products and let the consumer get access to their manufacture, but it is not as simple as it sounds. There are, as in all things, a lot of moving pieces and enough rope to hang yourself.
