jgilliam··on Google has 'outgrown' its 14-year old mission statement, says Larry Page
The Guardian's headline is very misleading. Google's mission statement is not "don't be evil" - it's "to organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful."

Larry Page is clearly referring to the mission statement that may need to change, not "Don't be evil." This is all made very clear in the original FT article The Guardian cites, they just chose to go for a more inaccurate and salacious framing of the entire story. http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/2/3173f19e-5fbc-11e4-8c27-00144...

[edit: the guardian changed the headline!]

jgilliam··on Patents Are Eating the World and Hurting Innovation
I read the headline as "Parents are eating the world and hurting innovation."
jgilliam··on Update on Julie Horvath's Departure
A "full investigation" is the law in California when sexual harassment claims are made. It's not an admission of anything, it's just literally the law.
jgilliam··on New Mac Pro Available for Online Orders
Film editors will gobble these up.
jgilliam··on Why Aren't Salespeople Running Software Companies?
There are tons of software companies run by sales people...they just all fail.
jgilliam··on Ask HN: Startup CEO Salary
Anyone who thinks they should get a salary like that when you've only raised $250k should not be your CEO. Run away quickly. Don't even try to negotiate him down.
jgilliam··on Ask HN: Who Is Hiring? (June 2012)
Los Angeles, CA

NationBuilder is hiring developers and a designer. We build tools for leaders, mostly focused on politics right now.

We're backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Sean Parker, and many others.

jgilliam··on Tony Hsieh's new $350 million startup
His point that Zappos isn't a technology company, but rather a customer service company makes Las Vegas the perfect fit. Las Vegas is the #1 city in the world for service industries.
jgilliam··on Ask HN: How has your life changed after selling your startup?
The main thing for me was being able to pursue an idea no one would fund. I could self-fund it to the point where it was obvious people wanted it, at which point fundraising is easy.

And having done a few startups, I also had the confidence to not need anyone else to tell me it was a good idea. I just needed to build something customers would pay for. Those can be two very different things.

jgilliam··on Photojojo, Jelly founder needs bone marrow match to save his life
One thing to know that is somewhat unique to bone marrow transplants, is that you need a lot of people registered in order to find anyone who will match. It's not like you can go pay someone for their bone marrow and be done with it, you need to find that one person amongst millions.

That changes the incentives a lot. When you register, some day you may get a call that you are the one person in the world that can save someone's life.

[I had a bone marrow transplant from a stranger 15 years ago]

jgilliam··on Posterous Swaps Blog Platform for Social Network
Except they aren't called sites and groups any more. You're really underestimating how important labeling is.

EDIT: Lots of people want sites, lots of people want private groups, but no one wants a space simply because they don't know what that is.

jgilliam··on In Case You Wondered, a Real Human Wrote This Column
If a computer had written this article, maybe it would have mentioned how useful this technology is for spammers.
jgilliam··on Your startup probably isn't a platform
How is Amazon not a platform? Completely leaving aside AWS (which the author does mention):

a. it has zillions of stores selling through it b. a whole generation of small businesses have been built by people selling used books, cds and dvds. c. anyone can publish their own books, cds and dvds d. anyone can use their fulfillment services and payment services e. digital video and music f. kindle

jgilliam··on "Any time you have worked long hours, it is a sign of a broken process."
Ah, so this is why it takes LinkedIn forever to add new features.
jgilliam··on Chris Hughes's Startup Jumo ‘Acquired’ for $0 and a Graceful Exit
Jumo is a non-profit, not a startup. Using the language "acquired" and "exit" doesn't make any sense.
jgilliam··on Facebook Wins “Worst API” in Developer Survey
I wonder if there is a way to calculate the total cost of lost developer productivity due to Facebook bugs, changes, and bad documentation. I swear I spend way too much of my time dealing with it, and it sounds like everyone else does too.
jgilliam··on Direct Democracy: Iceland's crowdsourced constitution submitted for approval
The Constitution is not about direct democracy at all, it's setting up a parliamentary republic. And the drafting of it involved a lot of online feedback and participation, but was ultimately written by a committee of 25 people.

Some noteworthy aspects: It guarantees universal health care, the President is elected with preferential voting (where voters rank their choices 1,2,3,etc.), and to amend the Constitution, Parliament must pass a bill and then a vote is held within 1-3 months. It's also possible for Parliament to unilaterally amend the Constitution, but only with a 5/6th super super majority.

jgilliam··on Aaronsw indicted for hacking MIT network to download millions of JSTOR docs
He posted on his blog yesterday that there would be a "major announcement" on blog.demandprogress.org today, but nothing has been posted.

jgilliam··on The Fridge (YC S10) Is Going Dark
Path is also doing really poorly. Another site based on sharing information privately with a smaller group of people. Has anyone shown traction with a product that is explicitly anti-viral?
jgilliam··on Google Loses Access to Twitter Stream, Suspends Realtime Search
Why would you write a contract in October of 2009 to expire on July 2nd? Such an odd date.
jgilliam··on Cross Platform Mobile
I think he is saying we shouldn't use jQuery Mobile because it's a web app that tries to look like a native app.
jgilliam··on Show HN: NationBuilder, my startup just launched
Jesse Haff, he is amazing. http://3dna.us/about
jgilliam··on Show HN: NationBuilder, my startup just launched
Thanks for the feedback. We definitely struggled with the overall positioning at launch. Our initial target is political campaigns and non-profits, mostly because they know they need this kind of a tool, and the current options are ridiculously expensive. For them, it's all about coordinating volunteers and engaging people in every channel possible.

But we also think, based on our background using political organizing to distribute documentaries, that there is a big market potential for independent creators as well, a market that will get very large. Authors, filmmakers, musicians, comedians, YouTubers, bloggers, etc.

The first few questions in the FAQ talk about this: http://nationbuilder.com/faq

We're definitely gonna play around with the main language on the website, thank you.

jgilliam··on Show HN: NationBuilder, my startup just launched
It's built from the ground up, Ruby on Rails mostly.
jgilliam··on Jack Dorsey Takes Over Product Again at Twitter as Executive Chairman
My guess is that he just really loves the product, and now that Ev and Biz are AWOL, he can actually do what he wants with it.

It's also a great PR response to the #dickbar.

jgilliam··on 50% of Tweets Consumed Are Generated By Just 20K Elite Users
Last I heard, Twitter has 200 million users. So that means the top 0.01% of users get 50% of all tweet impressions. Tweet wealth is 100x more concentrated than financial wealth in America.
jgilliam··on Four lines of code for The New York Times’ paywall
It was clearly designed to be easy to hack, so they are not afraid of that. What they've really done is set a premium price on their content. Whether people pay it or not, everyone will now feel like the NYT is very high quality. That seems to be the intent.
jgilliam··on Heroku is partially down (my site unresponsive)
Amazon is having problems, it's impacting Heroku and many others.
