jgilliam··on Why Van Halen's contract calls for the removal of all brown M&Ms
Because you'll still filter out people who can read the listing, but either can't or don't want to write an italian sonnet.
jgilliam··on YC startups unite to drive nail into the coffin of Internet Explorer 6
I've heard that IE6 is prevalent within the federal government.
jgilliam··on [dead]
When people start doing something with a website of mine that I don't want them to, I just give them some other place to do it. So with a blog on a particular topic, if people get more social and off-topic, I'll create an "off-topic forum," and direct everyone there.

There is definitely an influx of politics into HN, and it will probably continue. Why not create a HN: Politics site?

jgilliam··on Ask HN: Payroll for bootstrapped startups?
I use SurePayroll and recommend it. It takes care of all the tax stuff, and you can include 1099 contractors as well as W2 employees.
jgilliam··on Imagine Pot Was Legal. How Would You Brand It?
Popular opinion is accelerating in favor of legalization. See this chart from fivethirtyeight: http://is.gd/1TbjZ
jgilliam··on The Quirky Genius of the Dos Equis Ad Campaign
The ads are created by a company that imports the beer and markets it in the U.S. So they actually can't make the beer better.
jgilliam··on Twitter Banned from White House
so who's updating this? http://twitter.com/whitehouse
jgilliam··on If you find yourself competing with the Internet, find a way out.
I'm not completely sure that Evan Williams is trying to exert control in the same way Microsoft has. Much of the great stuff that happens online is due to a "benevolent dictator" approach. Someone (or a team) needs to shepherd the "big new idea" through many phases, in an environment where a lot of people are trying to muck it up (trolls, spammers, you name it).

Giving anyone the firehose could cause all sorts of problems in the short-term. It seems reasonable for Twitter execs to think carefully about the right way to do that.

jgilliam··on Confirmed: Digg Just Hijacked Your Twitter Links
They're pushing bit.ly pretty hard, it's the default.
jgilliam··on Confirmed: Digg Just Hijacked Your Twitter Links
I just started an act.ly twitter petition to put some more pressure on them: http://act.ly/9u

Tweet: petition @digg to stop hijacking twitter links. no bait and switch! http://act.ly/9u Retweet to sign #digg

jgilliam··on Twitter’s Internal Strategy Laid Bare: To Be “The Pulse Of The Planet”
Google employees spying on Google Analytics accounts would definitely be considered "evil."

Supposedly, ending the entire drug war would save the country $77 billion a year.

jgilliam··on YouTube Will Be Next To Kiss IE6 Support Goodbye
This seems like a move by Google to push faster adoption of HTML 5.
jgilliam··on MySpace now a “digital ghetto”
MySpace started in Los Angeles, and its first users were mostly from the local club scene. Very big difference from the Ivy League.
jgilliam··on The Taming of Comment Trolls
I don't see why whitehouse.gov shouldn't be allowed to delete comments within a specific defined set of published rules. If you're in a courthouse, and start hurling obscenities at the judge, or do anything "out of order", you can actually get thrown in jail. There are no free speech issues there, so why can't a similar (although hopefully less draconian) set of rules apply online?
jgilliam··on Ask HN: what unwanted domain names are you sitting on?
climatecancer.* yesweare.org/us question4.org & questionfor.org
jgilliam··on 5 very detailed posts analyzing Google Wave
The demo video had a spam folder, just like gmail, so there's something baked in.

People will be able to write robots that will flag spam.

jgilliam··on Ask HN: S-Corp/C-Corp/LLC
If you register as an S-Corp in California, your company will be able to get group health insurance regardless of your personal health situation. It's required by California law. You won't be able to if it's an LLC. This may not be a big deal for you, but it was for me since I wouldn't have been able to do my startup if I couldn't get health insurance through the company.
jgilliam··on A hundred million mistakes: Microsoft's Bing search engine
Microsoft's DNA is to copy or buy things, it's simply what they do. It started with QDOS/86DOS.

jgilliam··on A brazen ripoff of Twitvid
The copycats must have made the calculation that if twitvid.io couldn't afford to buy twitvid.com, they wouldn't be able to afford lawyers either.

I hope twitvid.com finds out they are wrong.

jgilliam··on How do you deal with competitors, people who want you to fail, in open systems?
Correct, that's why I'm making a distinction between them. How do you deal with the people who don't want government to succeed? I'm not asking how do you deal with people who may have a different vision for how government can be successful.
jgilliam··on Startup Idea: A butler for your idle computer
A better title would have been: "Bring back PointCast!"
jgilliam··on Ask HN: check out our upcoming web stats dashboard app - MightyReach.com
There's definitely a huge need for this.

You should include delicious links too.

jgilliam··on Laws to Save Journalism (or The Most Unintentionally Funny Thing I've Read All Day)
Nationalize a few newspapers. A couple billion dollars a year would finance an incredible number of investigative journalists, and it would be far better for democracy than what we currently have -- dumbed down news designed to maximize viewership and ad sales.
jgilliam··on Ask HN: Please review my new social learning site
More food for thought.. "Enroll" feels like there is going to be some requirement of me, and I wasn't willing to make that commitment yet. This isn't the right language, but something like "keep tabs on this course", or simply "follow", or maybe there's two options: "enroll" and "audit"
jgilliam··on Ask HN: Please review my new social learning site
I signed up. The "conversational japanese" course was highly rated and recommended, so I enrolled in it, but I don't know what to do now. There doesn't seem to be anything there. Where's the course?

The "enroll" button was a bit scary, I wasn't sure what that would do. I'd expose as much of the course materials as you can without forcing someone to enroll.
