jfno67··on Parsing / Recursive Descent Parser
I read it on my own, while I was writing compilers for a reengineering tool. I have to admit this was a very long time ago.
jfno67··on Parsing / Recursive Descent Parser
I feel obliged to mention "Compilers: Principles, Techniques, and Tools" or more commonly known as the dragon book. I loved that book.
jfno67··on Lemonade files S1
I think you can say that all insurance have at least partial network effect built in. Quality of underwriting comes from a diverse and large risk portfolio, which leads to profits and pricing accuracy.
jfno67··on Google Maps is filled with false business addresses pretending to be nearby
Locksmith use to do the same kinds of scam on 411 services and yellow pages listings. The fees to have multiple business phone lines with the phone company was the real curation.
jfno67··on Google Cloud Text-To-Speech Powered by DeepMind WaveNet Technology
I decided to do the opposite so French text with the wavenet English voice, pretty funny too.
jfno67··on Mark Karpeles Will End Up Taking $859M from Mt. Gox Bankruptcy
Isn't this the choice you made at filling time when you specified you wanted to be repaid in BTC?
jfno67··on Startup Technical Diligence Is a Waste of Time
Beating random doesn't mean making a return. A lot of VC plainly and simply lose money.
jfno67··on Dozens of oil tankers cluster off the coast of Texas due to oil price fall
I wonder if all those tankers next to Fujairah are indicating the same thing. http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/centerx:56/centery:...
jfno67··on The Driverless Car Revolution Should Not Begin with Cars
You can also have a convoy of 1 manned truck with n driverless truck that play follow the leader. You end up with a train model on the road infrastructure.
jfno67··on Poll: How do you create the website for your startup or side project?
Once I heard Marissa Mayer recount that she asked Sergey Brin where he got the idea of doing such a minimalist design for Google. Sergey's answer was: I don't do HTML.
jfno67··on Google Play revenue grew 17%, iOS revenue contracted 0.7% in Nov 2012
Contracted vs grew is still in opposite direction and significant, but I doubt those numbers are right, they should both be growing.
jfno67··on The Sudden, Mysterious Exit Of A Quora Cofounder Has Silicon Valley Baffled
After the new $10M in cash it is $20M/3,000,000, so they are worth $6.66/share
jfno67··on Building A Factory vs. Discovering A Goldmine
The formula by Sivers he refers too seems to be the best approximation to value idea. I still like to put emphasis on execution instead of idea, since almost everybody I talk with that value idea is in fact doing some analysis paralysis and will start working when they get that "great idea".
jfno67··on How many metrics matter for your startup? Only one
Cool recap of all the aspect you want to monitor while building your business. While giving you the way to not drown in too much information by focusing on one.

In retrospect it is obvious, but so hard. I always wanted to focus on the metrics where we were doing well or where we knew what to do next.

jfno67··on Blind man shocks researchers with what he sees.
This subject was presented in a book I read recently, along with many interesting aspect of how our mind works. The book is definitely worth reading, it was "Thinking, Fast and Slow" by Daniel Kahneman.

I wonder if it can explain the fact that I don't fall or bump into obstacles when I walk and read at the same time...

jfno67··on Marissa Mayer Employment Offer Letter
I saw her current net worth being evaluated at $300,000,000. I doubt this moves has anything to do with money, but she would not want to be seen as a cheap hire either.
jfno67··on Why Privacy Matters Even if You Have 'Nothing to Hide'
The article cited never asked "Is 12,000 ...". They say "Look cameras are not that bad since most are on premise and are privately owned and operated." I find that this comparison is dishonest and is not relevant.

edit: changed "you cite" to "cited", The response is not to the OP.

jfno67··on Why Privacy Matters Even if You Have 'Nothing to Hide'
The fact that the majority of camera is privately owned is not relevant. The question remains: "Is 500 cameras too many, too little or just about right, for a county of 1 million?". I have no idea, but I don't see why the ratio public/private is important.
jfno67··on Google Maps for Android Labs Offers Offline Caching
I used it while abroad. Since the GPS works, you can see where you are on the map, which is a big plus over only a paper map. Obviously getting data access would be even better, but it's a nice free alternative.
jfno67··on Light Table - a new IDE concept
I immediately thought of Visual Age for Smalltalk when I saw this, but having been done is no reason to not try again.
jfno67··on Light Table - a new IDE concept
This is great, I would love to try something like it. Making each code artifact living outside of the file paradigm should enable new way to develop, but in the past what I saw trying failed (at least for me). The drafting table look like the abstraction that can make this work. The interactivity would be key too.

I can't help but think of a drafting pad and drafting notebook to allow us to work on our system everywhere...

jfno67··on What you could do if you were Google and had their databases
They do say they check if the same user by cookie or logged in is back on Google within a short amount of time. This would mean the site was a poor fit for the query. It is an indicator of the quality of the result for this query and for this user. They never mentioned using Google Analytics, maybe they do too.
jfno67··on It’s too late for Dave Winer and John Battelle to save the common web
The timing seems strange if you are not following Dave Winer and John Battelle blogs. They both recently talked about Data Lock In and Scoble seems to see it as too little too late. He uses the story to back his position.

My guess is someone pressured him to take a stand and he doesn't want to. Would he have really taken a stand 4 years ago? Probably not, Scoble needs his audience.

jfno67··on Motorola vs. Apple: Apple may no longer sell iPhone 3 and 4 in Germany
They understand how lucrative it is for lawyers. Check what they were doing prior to being politicians.
jfno67··on Request for Startups: Kill Hollywood.
It's not the amount of money spent, it's the time available. They probably fear far much the time spent in Facebook, casual web games, youTube, etc... Those are only starting and they see what it means for revenue in the future.
jfno67··on The real reason you can't hire developers....
At one company I was working the career section was listing open position and we were actually doing cost cutting layoffs. Not listing position on your company website is seen as a bad signal to send to the public and your investors. Sometimes, it's more a marketing statement than anything.
jfno67··on Why did we do this?
The problem often becomes that even if it is written, the documentation is rarely or never read. People then wonder if they should write more or less and why it is this way. I think one of the problem is we think we are finished after we write it. I would like to see a place where someone went over the documentation and rewrite it to extract the cultural references instead of the specifics of one situation. The documentation would be more about how to react than what to do exactly.
jfno67··on An eruption from the Sun that happened today
In 1989 the Quebec province power grid was brought down for some hours following important solar activity. Like you said for consumers it was simply a black out. As for the power infrastructure I think they made important changes to make it more resistant (in Quebec), but I don't have more details.
jfno67··on How AirBnB Became a Billion Dollar Company
This is spam pure and simple the seller can't decide their product is so in line with what you need that they can spam you. Who is then the judge of what is spam. Contacting user that haven't specified they don't want to be contacted by commercial interest is OK, but not someone who said no.
jfno67··on Can BitCoin, the First Open Source Currency, Threaten the Dollar?
Even if they never convert it to USD, taxes has to be paid on all revenues, regardless of currency.

The fact the transactions can be pretty anonymous makes them think they will be able to hide them.
