I press buttons. More often than not, the right ones.

jfim··on Grok3 Launch [video]
I've found that Claude has been pretty decent at writing boilerplate code.

For example asking it something like "I have an elixir app that is started with `mix ...` can you give me a Dockerfile to run it in a container?"

It can also do things like "Given this code snippet, can you make it more Pythonic" or even generate simple apps from scratch.

For example, a prompt like "Can you write me a snake game in HTML and JavaScript? The snake should eat hot dog emojis to grow longer." will actually generate something that works. You can see the generated code for that prompt at https://claude.site/artifacts/34540f88-965e-45ca-8083-040e30...

Following up with "Can you make it so that people can swipe on mobile to control the snake?" generates https://claude.site/artifacts/651e957a-9957-488c-ae6b-e81348... which is pretty good IMO for 30 seconds of effort.

It also has a surprisingly competent analysis mode where you can upload a CSV and have it generate charts and analyze the data.

It's not perfect, it'll sometimes get confused or generate some dubious code, but you can quickly get to a 90% good solution with 1% of the effort, which is pretty impressive IMO.

jfim··on Resigning as Asahi Linux project lead
That's pretty fascinating, thanks for sharing it! It's a pretty compelling explanation as to why some people seem to be completely unable to logically explain their reasoning for certain beliefs and just fall back to "well it should be so because everybody says so."
jfim··on Show HN: I made a tiny book using a pen-plotter and AI
The author mentioned that the maker of their pen plotter is evil mad scientist, so it's likely they're using the AxiDraw
jfim··on Show HN: I made a tiny book using a pen-plotter and AI
Super cool and it looks fantastic!

I've been wanting to do something with a plotter, thanks for the tip about center line tracing

jfim··on E Ink’s color ePaper tech gets supersized for outdoor displays
It's not only you. Movement in general is a preattentive feature, meaning that it gets processed subconsciously and appears to "pop out" in an image.
jfim··on Trump says he has directed Treasury to stop minting new pennies
The overhead of obtaining a large amount of pennies and smelting them likely makes the whole operation unprofitable, besides being illegal for defacing currency.
jfim··on Show HN: Value likelihoods for OpenAI structured output
You can ask it to generate R or Python code to do the clustering, and review the generated code.

I'm not sure about ChatGPT, but I know Claude has a data exploration thing where you can upload a CSV and ask it questions; it generates Python code and it can be reviewed.

jfim··on The Toyota Prius Transformed the Auto Industry
What EV model would that be, out of curiosity? I wasn't aware the Germans were making EVs back then.
jfim··on Brood War Korean Translations
The author also used domain specific language when they meant jargon.
jfim··on Celebrating the Timeless Allure of Tintin's Aesthetics
Some countries have moral rights which are perpetual, and are meant to prevent works from being mutilated, defaced, misattributed, or otherwise could cause reputational damage to the author.

It's not unreasonable for an author to want their creation to be enjoyed as it was designed to be, but not torn apart to be reassembled in different ways.

jfim··on A rare alignment of 7 planets is about to take place
Will a picture from a wide angle lens actually show the planets? I thought planets just show up as a bright dot in the sky.
jfim··on Three-quarters of the land is drying out, 'redefining life on Earth'
Depends on who "we" includes. First world, probably not. People doing rainfall based subsistence agriculture, some will.
jfim··on Natural acid induces pseudo-starvation, anti-ageing effects in animals
The article doesn't have links or references to the original papers.

A better source for this is this news post by nature (https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-04220-5) which also has proper citations for the original papers.

jfim··on Grayjay Desktop App
My completely unsubstantiated pet hypothesis about this is that it's cheaper and easier to cache the same click bait for everyone instead of different well tailored recommendations.
jfim··on Show HN: Artemis, a Calm Web Reader
I believe the idea is to have a source that updates infrequently, so that one isn't compelled to refresh it all the time.

It's not unlike one service that I saw where you'd get email once per day in your inbox, at a specific time.

jfim··on Documented and annotated source code for Elite on the Commodore 64
The creator of the repository does mention it:

> My hope is that the educational and non-profit intentions of this repository will enable it to stay hosted and available, but the original copyright holders do have the right to ask for it to be taken down, in which case I will comply without hesitation. I do hope, though, that along with the various other disassemblies and commentaries of this source, it will remain viable.

jfim··on The era of open voice assistants
That's a pretty timely release considering Alexa and the Google assistant devices seem to have plateaued or are on the decline.
jfim··on Why microservices might be finished as monoliths return with a vengeance
Demoralized or denormalized?
jfim··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
One thing to check is whether the power saving options are disabled.

I turned them off one time and it wouldn't even last a day, but after enabling them back again it's back to it's normal multiple days battery charge.

jfim··on What does this button do? – My new car has a mysterious and undocumented switch
Depends where you live, and how much of a hassle it is to get a rental car.

If you live somewhere with decent public transportation and good car sharing infrastructure (eg. walk to a nearby car share and unlock the doors with an app or a card vs Uber to Hertz and wait for an hour to sign paperwork), then yes that's a viable option. For many places in the US and Canada, that's not viable unfortunately.

jfim··on Car tires shed a quarter of all microplastics in the environment
One potential way to do this would be to weigh the tires at sale and charge a tax based on the weight of the tire. When the tire is ultimately disposed of, a refund is issued based on the weight of the disposed tire.

This would encourage both avoiding tire wear and proper disposal of tires. That assumes obviously that people don't cheat the system by making tires heavier somehow when returning them.

jfim··on Spotify has shut down several API endpoints
It might be Grooveshark that they're thinking of, it was notorious for quickly reuploading content that was taken down by DMCA requests: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grooveshark
jfim··on Avremu: An 8-Bit AVR Microcontroller Simulator Written in LaTeX
That's absolutely hilarious, and a pretty fun hack.

By the way, if I understood you correctly, this sentence

> I'm still missing 5 opcodes (MULS, MULSU, FMUL, FMULS, FMULSU), but until now I did not encounter a C file, the AVR-GCC emits these opcodes.

could be rewritten as

> There are 5 opcodes that are not implemented (MULS, MULSU, FMUL, FMULS, FMULSU), as I have not yet encountered a C file for which AVR-GCC emits these opcodes.

jfim··on DB48X: High Performance Scientific Calculator, Reinvented
Do you mean KhiCAS?
jfim··on DB48X: High Performance Scientific Calculator, Reinvented
For those of us that used those calculators in engineering class, the math that is displayed by the calculator also looks like what's in the textbook, making it easy to check if one has entered the right thing in the calculator.

Here's a simple example from their documentation: https://education.ti.com/en/customer-support/knowledge-base/...

Using the Python repl doesn't display nice math as far as I know (let me know if there's a way to make it so it), as you'd have in an environment for doing symbolic math (eg. https://www.wolframalpha.com/input?i=integrate+sin+x+dx+from... )

Another thing if I remember correctly one could do is something like 3_ft*3_ft>_m^2 to convert 9 square feet in square meters, and do things like keep units throughout a calculation as a quick check that the calculator input is sane.

jfim··on Steve Ballmer was an underrated CEO
Out of curiosity, what do you see as the fall of Xbox? It seems to work fine to play games, even if they had missteps with certain things (eg. Kinect being deprecated after being mandatory, some hardware issues).
jfim··on BYD EV teardown in Japan reveals secrets to its affordability
They already are. Android auto and Apple carplay use your smartphone's brains to display on the car's touchscreen.
jfim··on I Had $100k in Debt So I Moved into My Car

jfim··on Review: ReMarkable Paper Pro
