jet_32951··on EPA Launches Biggest Deregulatory Action in U.S. History
"It's one thing to burn down the outhouse and quite another to install indoor plumbing." - P.J. O'Rourke
jet_32951··on Marketing to Engineers (2001)
A good example, especially if you are interested in any facet of video imaging, is [0] and here is why: 1) it provides standards references, 2) it provides usable first approximations you can execute right away to verify them, 3) its examples are well-selected. Since my company supports about the most conservative industry on Earth, we have to convince layers of bureaucrats we know what we are doing and the concepts therein helped us do it. We will not necessarily buy the company's products, but they certainly gave us some ability to attach numbers to what was a bit hand-wavy. In return the company is now 'of interest'.

jet_32951··on Show HN: Vowl daily word guessing game
mostly straightforward, but a question: should you use 'Antigua and Barbuda' as the country question would you have it as V__V_VV/V__/_V__V_V ? The rules are easy to get used to through the intro but edge cases may get odd.
jet_32951··on Generation Junk
That's my metric. A VF display is OK but an LCD, especially on kitchen appliances or white goods, is just about a guarantee of a short life span - never mind a touchscreen.
jet_32951··on Ask HN: What is a quote that permanently changed the way you think?
so long as a man rides his HOBBY-HORSE peaceably and quietly along the king's highway, and neither compels you or me to get up behind him,--pray, Sir, what have either you or I to do with it?" - Laurence Sterne
jet_32951··on Schedule Chicken (2007)
Reminds me of 'countdown roulette': system managers have buttons to slap if they want a launch hold. About the time batteries are initiated ("squibbed") a number of those buttons get pushed but the earliest of the bunch is the one who gets the blame for the hold.
jet_32951··on The end of cool small cars
It's hard to know what to mourn more here: the subsumption of NSU into Volkswagenwerke AG, or the demise of Citroën in the USA. Both manufacturers had genuinely fresh ideas; both provided truly mold-breaking machinery.
jet_32951··on France is going to destroy wine for 200M €, topping up a 160M € EU fund
Guardian is behind the times. Languedoc, Roussillon, and Midi-Pyrénées have been subsumed into a region now called Occitanie. Bordeaux lies in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. And the statistics [0] show it isn't even close: Occitanie raises 2.5 litres of wine for every litre from Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

It is beyond dispute that the value of the wines are different. Bordeaux' wines are on average much better than Minervois', but wine lakes are the province of Occitanie.

jet_32951··on Medicine is plagued by untrustworthy clinical trials
Have a look at Derek Lowe's excellent blog [0] to view the depths of malfeasance, if not outright fraud, in which "studies" are created.

[0] https://www.science.org/content/blog-post/fakin-it-modern-wa... is just his latest in a long string of well-documented posts.

jet_32951··on Man who nearly killed physical media returns with $60k vinyl turntable
The article says Ive's consultancy contributed the power/ speed control button and the hinges. It isn't as though they let him play with anything important.
jet_32951··on When an app asks for permissions, it should have a “feed fake data” option
GrapheneOS has implemented storage and contact scopes. Users can set a program's permitted storage environment. Similarly, contact scopes allows users to limit access to contacts that are tagged with a keyword. On my phone the 'special' contact group includes Djimn Hovnbg, with a number in Egypt, Blin Futtum'ch with a UK number, and so on.
jet_32951··on Buy well, buy once
In the US the calculus for cheap tools is "cheap Chinese chainsaw, $120; ER (emergency room) visit, $3750."
jet_32951··on Daniel Micay publicly steps down from GrapheneOS
Daniel, I am sorry your efforts caused you pain. I hold you in my utmost respect and hope you will master the pain your efforts have cost you.
jet_32951··on System D
nothing remains to be said. Thanks.
jet_32951··on System D
Could be but my understanding is the D stands for débrouiller (se débrouiller = take oneself out of the fog). Kind of like the American "National Awareness Day" where people are encouraged to extract their heads and take note of the people in their surroundings.
jet_32951··on System D
Brilliant. Apart from Freeling's "The Kitchen Book / The Cook Book" système D appears throughout French culture including the record "Système D" by Les Rita Mitsouko. It stands there encouraging those who get it to understand and overcome despite one's being knee-deep in sewage.
jet_32951··on Hundreds of changes made to latest editions of Roald Dahl's books
Reminiscent of '1984' is this tendency to bowdlerize art some people find offensive. It is literally editing the past, and it is a danger because someone is deciding what is to be edited, and it is probably not you or I.
jet_32951··on Police Keep Violating the U.S. Constitution With Illegal Traffic Stops
Yup. I lost any respect for Vero Beach, Florida police when they used a pretextual stop - dim, not missing, license plate light - to ask that they search my car. I'm a dull SOB but that pushed the wrong button and I declined. With all the foofaraw those clowns wasted 45 minutes of my life.
jet_32951··on Volkswagen Originalteil
And an ANSI standard (ANSI K100.1-1974) for dry martinis.
jet_32951··on The truffle industry is a scam
That is due to a species of yeast called Brettanomyces, usually shortened to brett. Judicious use of brett can impart smoky or leathery characteristics - lumped together politely as "barnyard" or "horse blanket" notes in beer or wine.
jet_32951··on San Francisco decriminalizes psychedelics
That's been thoroughly debunked by Derek Lowe: https://www.science.org/content/blog-post/fainting-fentanyl-...
jet_32951··on Amazon Closes, Abandons Plans for Dozens of US Warehouses
Amazon's losing it, here and there, on price as well. Their price for my cat's l-lysine supplement is 3/2 what it is from a well-known pet stuff supply. The price for my new sunglasses was matched by the manufacturer which also ships faster.
jet_32951··on Citroen 2cv pages
That sound from the Citromatic used to be called 'boinking' and it is inescapable unless the fluids and seals are up to snuff. Citroën hydraulics are detailed but not that complex, patience + Viton aftermarket seals (green fluid = hexylene glycol) are your friends.

Agreed that the ID (idée)-19 had a lot of advantages from its simplicity.

jet_32951··on Michael Lewis on why Americans don’t trust experts
An expert will, left to themself, set the stage by explaining the conditions under which their conclusions apply, and the assumptions made. That is completely antithetical to the sound-bite-oriented media environment.

Expertise doesn't work out of context, and as the amount of information one copes with increases so does the necessity of setting it forth. That is part of the problem of successive boiling-down of e.g. Powerpoints.

jet_32951··on We need someone who has done “it” before
Met this phenomenon today. The interviewer could not elucidate what 'it' was except with buzzwords that have been overworked into meaninglessness.
jet_32951··on Marriott gives away guest’s stuff, fights compensation in court
Why is it that Marriott seems to be over-represented in this kind of issue? One doesn't see Hilton or Intercontinental involved in shafting their guests.
jet_32951··on Disney says Florida cannot dissolve self-governing without paying debts
That's probably right, though I wonder whether facts impacting Florida's tax burden wouldn't be exposed by e.g. the Miami Herald - and whether it would matter.
jet_32951··on Disney says Florida cannot dissolve self-governing without paying debts
This is how Desantis' habit of coming in fast, loud and stupid will carry him out of politics. It will be a hell of a show when six million Florida households find themselves liable for 1.0e9 worth of bonds and Desantis says "oops".
jet_32951··on Project Gutenberg – Library of over 60k free eBooks
There is an Australian version of this link: http://gutenberg.net.au . There are quite a few books there that are not in gutenberg.org because the Aus. version observes Australian copyright law. You won't find much R.A. Freeman, for example, in the parent but almost his entire œuvre can be found on the Aussie site.
jet_32951··on Gold Grows On Eucalyptus Trees (2013)
Unlike eucalypts in Australia, in California and Hawai'i nothing eats them. Tasmanian bluegum is the most common eucalypt in that range [0]. Therefore a) they grow very rapidly, and b) are useless as structural or furniture woods. The Berkeley Hills "Tunnel" fire of 1991 [1] was driven in large measure by the presence of eucalypts. In much of northern California today, eucalypts are seen as large flammable weeds.
