jessermeyer··on A Review of the Odin Programming Language
Odin has renewed my joy of programming.

Built in bounds checking, slices, distinct typing, no undefined behavior, consistent semantics between optimization modes, minimal implicit type conversions, context system and the standard library tracking allocator combine together to eliminate the majority of memory bugs I found use for sanitizers in C/C++. Now I'm back to logic bugs, which neither Rust nor sanitizers can help you directly with anyway because they rely on program and not language semantics. Obviously these features together do not eliminate those classes of bugs, like Rust, but Odin chooses a different point on the efficient frontier to target, and does so masterfully.

To put the cherry on top, the sane package system, buttery smooth syntax, sensible preprocessor (the 'constant system'), generics, LLVM backend for debug info / optimization, open source standard library, simply build system, engaging and well intended community make day to day programming a pleasant experience.

Branch coverage is a tiny fraction of total program state coverage.
jessermeyer··on SQLite: Past, Present, and Future
Please quote the entire statement. And stop the needless "even owns up to it" FUD.

> Actually, SQLite will easily do 50,000 or more INSERT statements per second on an average desktop computer. But it will only do a few dozen transactions per second. Transaction speed is limited by the rotational speed of your disk drive. A transaction normally requires two complete rotations of the disk platter, which on a 7200RPM disk drive limits you to about 60 transactions per second.

jessermeyer··on I like Odin
As someone who programs professionally in C but writes Odin as a hobby, Odin contributes more like 1000% ease of use, comparatively. And I bet that scales up even more on a team as compared to C.

ASAN, complex build tools, undefined behavior, implicit type conversions, etc, each of these contribute substantial problems all on their own, and they basically don't ever arise in Odin from the start.

jessermeyer··on We don't know how the universe began, and we will never know
> She redefines science to require simplicity, when it simply doesn't require it.

God wills the Universe into Being. I have explained everything completely. What qualities of a selection function do you have that would choose a different explanation?

One that doesn't require something more complex than the Universe to explain the Universe?

Thanks.

If this is true, for the OP, please provide raw linear values!
jessermeyer··on Physically Based: A Database of PBR Values for Real-World Materials
What does does the 'linear' term in 'sRGB linear' mean? sRGB is not a linear encoding. Does this mean that the original value was sRGB encoded but is now linear (can be stamped directly into a vec3 for BRDF work)?

Blending between materials of various roughness, e.g, rust / paint peeling, etc.
jessermeyer··on Physically Based: A Database of PBR Values for Real-World Materials
Please consider adding an optional 'roughness' column for the materials. You include them in the shader snippets. :)

How are roughness, specular, etc, measured?

jessermeyer··on Ask HN: I'm disabled and out of money. Now what?
I've lived through this myself. There is hope. I had the great fortune of being able to live with family until I could weather the storm. It turned out I needed to de-stress by life, live with accepting people, and eat delicious and healthy food over the coarse of a few years. I had destroyed by mind and body burning the candle at both ends with little to no nourishment (physically and non-physically), and the tax man came.

Every hope for your success..

"I'm not going to try to convince you to start writing a blog, since that has to be something you want to do, but I will point out that there's a large gap that's waiting to be filled by your knowledge. When I started writing this blog, I figured almost no one would ever read it; sure Joel Spolsky and Steve Yegge created widely read blogs, but that was back when almost no one was blogging. Now that there are millions of blogs, there's just no way to start a new blog and get noticed. Turns out that's not true." - Dan Luu https://danluu.com/about/

jessermeyer··on Probiotics can support the effect of antidepressants
I read the study. The risk is real tho uncommon, but the study was unable to determine if bacterial overgrowth was the underlying condition responsible for the symptoms, because they appear the same as those from D-lactic acidosis, caused by the same bacteria as found in common probiotics.

So whether the issue is too much bacteria or poor compatibly with a host remains unanswered by your linked study.

jessermeyer··on Probiotics can support the effect of antidepressants
I did not imply probiotics were a panacea. Difficult to imagine such a biological war playing out in every host beneficially. Although the study you mention is concerned with an unusual fermentation process, which may be caused by a different biological mechanism.
jessermeyer··on Probiotics can support the effect of antidepressants
The brain fog could have been a consequence of the ensuing biological war you started by introducing a new strain of bacteria to your digestion for which your metabolism had yet to adapt to.
