jesse_dot_id··on Dots: Always-on agents
Dots is a little on the nose isn't it? Like the damage over time spells I used to spam in MMORPGs.

It's a little crazy that OpenAI is releasing sandboxed agents that are supposedly isolated to act autonomously on your behalf, encouraging people to hook them to their various social accounts when they can't even control 700 of them with access to nothing. 700 seemed fine and not problematic, why not try millions with access to every social media platform instead?

We're sure this wasn't the product they were testing that used makeshift forums to start hacking into stuff? I thought it was suspicious that they went so cute and cartoony with the design. Because if it wasn't, you might do the math?

jesse_dot_id··on Dots: Always-on agents
The only reasons I can think for OpenAI and Meta to make their always-on agents cute little cartoons are all nefarious in nature.
jesse_dot_id··on Dots: Always-on agents
Nope. If an AI agent can't intuit how I will feel about an action it's taking on my behalf, I'm not give it access to my digital life. OpenClaw, Muse, Dots... doesn't matter which one. All are an equally awful idea.
jesse_dot_id··on GPT 6.1 Sol
No.
jesse_dot_id··on Meta VR Glasses
But won't the low FOV make it impossible to glance at other displays, even if the text is sharp enough?
jesse_dot_id··on Meta VR Glasses
$1300 for 70° × 66° FOV is pretty awful. Also, I wish they'd stop hyping these devices for productivity when they know the text isn't sharp enough. This will be good for watching stuff and that's about it. Is it good enough at that to justify tethering yourself to a brick? I suspect not for $1300.

I'm in VR a lot, mostly in bigscreen VR, and have had the Quest, Quest 2, and Quest 3. I don't see any reason to upgrade from the latter at all.

jesse_dot_id··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
We've all used LLMs. It was certainly somebody using Claude.
jesse_dot_id··on Fable 5 – Median thinking declined in August
It would change my perception but only if there were a competent and stringent administration in place. I didn't used to have to wonder if the ground beef I was buying was actually 1lb because there were inspections and repercussions, but stuff is kind of chronically underweight these days.

A properly run OWM enables you to stop wondering if you're being ripped off and that's what AI needs because I think it's incredibly easy to just assume we're being ripped off because these companies are all built on a foundation of wonton theft. (Not that I really care about that — I think all information should be free, but still.)

jesse_dot_id··on Fable 5 – Median thinking declined in August
The Office of Weights and Measures exists because, long before any of us were born, in 1836, companies were up to shady shit and consumers were paying for inconsistent products. I.E. Being scammed.

AI companies should be subject to the OWM like any other company that sells a product that varies in weight. Perhaps when a sane administration is re-elected; one that can read history books and comprehend why our regulations exist in the first place. Or have even a semblance of respect for its citizenry.

jesse_dot_id··on Grok 4.7
Yeah, not touching xAI for several glaring reasons. I share your confusion.
jesse_dot_id··on We Write Code by Hand
Good for you. Some people paint on canvases, too.
jesse_dot_id··on A heap overflow and SSO misconfiguration to compromise OpenAI internal repos
Let's have the nationalization argument with literally any other US administration in place.
jesse_dot_id··on Artificial intelligence now beats some of the best human forecasters
Climate as a pattern of weather over a long period of time. If the climate is increasingly unpredictable, I would think that it wouldn't really effect our ability to make short-term predictions, like a few days out.

But our ability to forecast weather on a longer timeline, like for industrial forecasting, is calibrated on historical weather patterns. But with weather being more erratic and unusual, I don't understand how AI will be forecasting with the models they have now.

jesse_dot_id··on Artificial intelligence now beats some of the best human forecasters
It will be interesting to see if this changes because presumably AI is using very predictable historical models, but it seems like the climate is shifting into something unseen that we won't have models for?

At least 150k on my relatively small FastAPI project, but hit my session limit. Continuing in a few hours.
jesse_dot_id··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
Hard agree. The entire tech media is acting insanely gullible in this regard. It's insane.
jesse_dot_id··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
Nobody at OpenAI is closely monitoring token usage or egress, eh? Alright. They should potentially fire a whole team of engineers if that's the case. I monitor egress from VMs that don't have shit on them.
jesse_dot_id··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
No?
jesse_dot_id··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
No, they're not wrong. There are just a very large number of people who are a special kind of stupid.
jesse_dot_id··on I resigned from Anthropic today
There are so many other existential risks to humanity. Throw it on the pile. At least this one has a chance to be really cool.
jesse_dot_id··on I resigned from Anthropic today
There are humans behind all of these actions. We're just not holding them responsible for some reason re: hacking into tech companies.
jesse_dot_id··on America's two largest school districts impose AI moratoriums
I truly don't understand why people think LLMs eliminate the need for mastery, or that they limit thinking. I have a lot more time to think when I use a good harness. It handles the pointless toil and I handle the thinking. I'm just thinking about different things. Instead of trying to coax the correct answers from a search engine, the LLM is doing that for me and parsing the correct output, so I'm not spending hours upon hours wading through detritus. While it's doing that, I'm using that time to think more about the problems I'm solving, the UX, etc.

I'm not sure what to tell you if you think the LLM solves for novel thinking.

jesse_dot_id··on America's two largest school districts impose AI moratoriums
Imagine saying this about a graphing calculator, because that is essentially what the LLM is for knowledge work. You can either be dumb and spell 8008135 or you can get an education and make it sing. They definitely want us dependent on their products for life, because that's what capitalism is, but dumb kids won't be the profitable ones.

Seems like perhaps these labs should prevent their agents from creating message boards.
jesse_dot_id··on GPT-6 Astra
Instinct. I think it drives UX. When I am designing an interface, I'm not just parroting something I've seen before. I am calling upon the breadth of my human existence, my professional experience, my empathy, to think about how another human will be using the applications that I create. It paints everything I touch.

LLM will never be able to do that. It can clone things that humans have created in the past but it can't create novel solutions that a human will enjoy without a human at the wheel iterating through prompts until it's great. AGI doesn't mean 'good enough' to me. It means better.

jesse_dot_id··on GPT-6 Astra
No, they're pretty clearly gaming benchmarks.
