what is SoMe?
jerrre··on Tech-savvy audiences block Google Analytics
It's the tracking part here that's hard. How do you know that the FB/IG ad was the first time the converting user heard of your product, or that it was the deciding factor? If you literally have no other way of discovering your product than this works, but it's easy for FB/IG to show your ad to users who were already going to convert and claim the conversion...
jerrre··on My mouse driver is asking for a firewall exemption (2019)
Assuming this question is in good faith:

I think* it has to do with not wanting to say something as 100% truth without knowing it's 100% true. Which can be interpreted as weakness/insecurity among more business/marketing minded folks.

*see my own usage of "I think"

jerrre··on TikTok overtakes Facebook as most downloaded app
Interesting quote, but if I'm not missing anything this link is just a bit shortsighted as proof right? If it's just the pic+names.
jerrre··on It doesn't take much public creativity to stand out as a job candidate
Your analogies are things that you use a large % of the time, almost any second. Whereas I've been programming for years, and never wrote a binary search (I think?), but perhaps I don't qualify as literate?

I think writing an if-statement would be closer to your analogies.

jerrre··on Sega sued for ‘rigged’ arcade machine
Your link goes to this current page, I assumed you were linking to an article about that anecdote.
jerrre··on Creep – a pretty sweet 4px wide pixel font
Nice experiment! Would be nice to see some example text in the end..
jerrre··on Ways to ship software
Might be because it's hard to reverse such a process if needed?
jerrre··on I Tricked Myself into Liking Running
For me the sweating would make this prohibitive in most case
jerrre··on I Tricked Myself into Liking Running
This resonates greatly with me, never thought about it this way, thanks!
jerrre··on How to Work Hard
Isn't that always subjective? Pointless with regard to what goals/standards?

Is lying in the grass pointless?

jerrre··on We moderns are status-drunk
is the last book you mention "The Savage Truth on Money - Terry Savage"?

The first is by Pink?

jerrre··on Why Can’t I Sleep?
Do you mean just before bed, or in general during the day?
jerrre··on Stripe Tax
Do you also provide advise on how to register?
jerrre··on Stripe Tax
There are also a lot of thresholds that might apply to your situation. More rules to look up, but could simplify it to having less administration if your revenue is under a couple K's
jerrre··on Stripe Tax
Your accountant is not going to build a system for you that verifies VAT IDs and can automatically calculate the tax % on check out I think?

jerrre··on We’re all paying for someone else’s 4-hour work week, not ours
You could argue that what's exploited is the fact that there is a country with a minimum wage of $8, and another with a median of $1.50 in your example. So if you're Tim Ferriss raised in the first country it works, but in the second it doesn't (if you don't find an even cheaper country).

The luck/unequality is in that what's not much money for you, is a lot of money for some-one else.

jerrre··on Dorodango: the Japanese art of making shiny mud balls (2019)
Do I understand correctly if you keep the middle portion? You remove both the water, and what settles immediately? I have a hard time visualizing.
jerrre··on How Japanese technology shaped dance music
1) Since many of these algorithms need to run on standalone hardware devices, many are still limited in power by their chips (and the economics). Amount of voices, oversampling, amount of presets, sound banks, samples can increase the quality of many devices. And many purely pc based electronic compositions also run into CPU/RAM limitations. Perhaps with endless money you don't run into this too quickly, but allowing more "bedroom producers" more power will surely breed new musical ideas

2) in my opinions there it is hard to overstate how much new inspiration can come from work on new UX/workflow/control ideas. Many of which will come at a cost of more CPU as you move away from 1 to 1 mapping from the DSP algorithms.

jerrre··on The problem with ‘follow your dream’
This will surely create lots of cases of athletes just crossing the border of what the body can take. I'd expect the show would become more about mishaps, than extreme performance.

Must definitely have a target audience, but not me.

jerrre··on The word “decide” has deadly origins
Interesting, and funny sounding, although apart from not translating, I don't really know a better translation for root in this context?
jerrre··on The word “decide” has deadly origins
To clarify: lisp as in speech impediment, we don't have our own word for the programming language
jerrre··on Why do we buy into the 'cult' of overwork?
Quite a bluff to pull: saying your starting early when you don't, when it's so easy to fall through. Does this actually happen?
jerrre··on Bird song sonographs show distinct drawing patterns
Interesting train of thought.

Perhaps it's good to know that the x axis (from left to right) is temporal. So for someone/something to translate this to an image with some special sense would also necessitate some memory part.

With a big fantasy you could continue your hypothesis by comparing it to describing an object you see with words by telling the height of the outline from left to right.

jerrre··on Hatetris – Tetris which always gives you the worst piece
This is perhaps why Magic the Gathering is a better metaphore for life than Poker, which also has the elements above, but not this one.

Although with poker you have the house that always wins...

jerrre··on How fit can you get from just walking?
I Have a this too and it can feel like I'm broken for that, as it's the exact opposite of people who feel energized from exercise. I'm not in bad shape at all but even a 1hr walk takes some time to be back to where I can focus on work most of the time. No solution yet sadly, apart from doing it in the evening when you don't need to do anything afterwards.

Meta enough this post was #1 for me on HN, making it the biggest drop of between regular and Classic HN.
