jerrre··on It's been a little over 3 weeks since Google randomly sent me $249,999
Can't bob see who sent the money, to find out it's a loan company, not the messager?
jerrre··on Excuse me but why are you eating so many frogs
>if you don’t eat them, someone else will and they will be better off because of it.

so what?

jerrre··on Ask HN: Is it okay to just bootstrap it, even when VCs are knocking?
A third option would be: just not grow.
jerrre··on Ask HN: Is it okay to just bootstrap it, even when VCs are knocking?
Apart from the financial part, whether that's interesting as an option depends what you enjoy more:

creating a business from scratch, or running and evolving a business.

jerrre··on The end of the manual transmission is near?
why not walk, with that argument
jerrre··on Email Is Async
I don't have experience with anyone actually throwing a fit for not insta-replying. But one factor is that for some people not-insta-replying == never replying.

Email and text as async communication only works if both parties actually have the processes in place to reply async.

jerrre··on AppLovin bids $17.5B to acquire Unity
I would imagine that if something is deemed fraud, it's the ad-space buyer that is deemed the victim, as they're paying for clicks that aren't genuine interest, and not the user/viewer.

IANAL etc, but I thought it would be good to add the distinction.

jerrre··on Cat gap
seals are called "sea dog" in many Germanic languages
jerrre··on Becoming a Full-Time Creator as a Software Engineer
Interesting data point.

How close is your approach to what they described, and did you actually make <$10?

That would make it a lot less enticing :)

jerrre··on What I think about network states
What do you mean when you talk about "the real world", is there one such thing?
jerrre··on I don't care how you web dev; I just need more better web apps
you could take this anecdote as a proof for how rarely these things happen
jerrre··on GTA GeoGuesser
For me the same, plus I have visited LA, which also helped. But I like the idea of a procedural generated GeoGuesser. Maybe in Minecraft worlds? Although you do not have roads, which makes it a lot harder
jerrre··on Ask HN: Do you trust solo entrepreneurs?
Maybe you've flewn more times than you lived from 30-40
jerrre··on AI Wrote and Performed a Jerry Seinfeld Routine [video]
the topic was chosen by the creator, not the AI
jerrre··on AI Wrote and Performed a Jerry Seinfeld Routine [video]
And how do we know that this is actually GPT-3 generated (ad infitum)
jerrre··on Yep: Google alternative that shares revenue with creators – by Ahrefs
It would be a lot more valuable if you just explain your thoughts instead of creating a guessing game
jerrre··on Earth Overshoot Day
> We can outsmart, and have repeatedly outsmarted, all sorts of potential disasters.

While this is my general take on these kinds of things as well, it's good to keep in mind that it takes just one outlier disaster to never be able to outsmart anything ever again, and perhaps it's just dumb luck that we're in a timeline where that didn't happen so far.

jerrre··on A little fixed point math for embedded audio
> I also checked my approximation against the "real" floating point sine operation, and found a maximum error of 0.012% for any i16 value, which is more than close enough for my ears!

0.012% error ~= -78dB to put it in respect with other audio stuff, which in most cases should be more than low enough. For reference the dynamic range of 16bit audio is around 90dB

jerrre··on “World’s best” Guitar Hero player was a cheat
You might as well, but if one is more fun to you than the other, there is nothing inherently better with a "real" instrument.
jerrre··on Write plain text files
I'd say he does write plain text files, which he then converts to html when he wants to share it on his site.

The difference perhaps being that the note-taking/creating aspect is done in plain text, and stored as such.

jerrre··on Why are letters shaped the way they are?
To save others from looking it up:

upside down A: ∀

Capital Gamma: Γ

Entailment symbol: ⊧

That last one would also be hard to represent in a 7 segment display, perhaps that would be the upside down F

jerrre··on Feds arrest couple, seize $3.6B in hacked Bitcoin funds
still: physical threat + seed phrase cracked > physical threat
jerrre··on I would like a job writing Haskell
You could argue that if you see an activity as an investment, by definition it is NOT free time?
jerrre··on 'Dutch reach' rule change to Highway Code welcomed
I think the main difference is that bikes generally ride closer to the parked cars than cars. But yeah, looking before making any movement on the road seems like a no brainer.
jerrre··on 'Dutch reach' rule change to Highway Code welcomed
I can't remember getting taught this method in my Dutch Driving lessons (ca 2008), and funnily enough I don't even know with what hand I open the door, I'll have to consciously pay attention next time.

However I'm very aware of checking the mirror before opening the car in parallel parking situations, as I have been on the receiving end of a car door while biking before I even was allowed to drive.

jerrre··on Ask HN: Is the past disappearing on the web?
From that article:

> “search term” > > Force an exact-match search.

This is no longer working in my experience, at least for full phrases (for example error messages), same in DuckDuckGo

jerrre··on Agatha Christie could afford a maid and a nanny but not a car
Didn't read the full article, but couldn't you argue that with audio recording and distribution 1 hour of string quartet playing labor can yield many more person-hours of string quartet listening in 1965 than 1865?
jerrre··on A guide to building Lego Classic Town cars
Perhaps they fear destroying there current business model with a virtual replacement?
jerrre··on Ask HN: Where Is the COLA?
Thanks
jerrre··on Ask HN: Where Is the COLA?
I need someone smarter than me to explain me what happens if all wages are always compensated for inflation. Would that mean no inflation?
