jerriep··on Why the world still loves Columbo
Another popular detective series from that time was German detective series Derrick. Growing up in the 70s and 80s in South Africa, watching Derrick was one of my weekly highlights.
jerriep··on Ask HN: Share your side project
Over a 25+ year career I have had to code far too many Admin Panels. Frameworks like Laravel have products like Nova and Backpack to help with this, but sadly there is nothing to speed up this process for ASP.NET Core. So I am working on StellarAdmin to try and fill that gap.

jerriep··on Ask HN: How free editors such as Atom, Brackets, VS Code are monetized?
Microsoft uses VS Code to create awareness of the MS brand and ultimately get people on to Azure.
jerriep··on Hoppscotch – A free, fast API request builder
According to the Postwoman website it has been renamed to Hoppscotch
jerriep··on 2020 Developer Survey Results
I'm a long time .NET developer and I love the framework, language (C#) and developer tools (I use Jetbrains Rider). However, if there is one thing I have to find that I do not like it is this. It is extremely common to find over-engineered .NET codebases, and the developers will just blindly follow some best-practices document from Microsoft without asking themselves whether all of it is necessary.

I once had a developer commenting on one of my blog posts who was very angry that I did not use a proper layered architecture in the blog post :)

jerriep··on Ask HN: Is it worth purchasing TailwindUI?
I bought it and I am happy with my decision. You need to understand, however, that there is still a bit of labour involved in extracting reusable components.

For example, you will want to make things like the buttons easily reusable instead of repeating the same CSS utility classes everywhere, so you may want to spend time creating reusable components for the common UI elements in your front-end framework.

Another frustrating thing is figuring out which are the "active" and "inactive" classes on some components, as described in this tweet: https://twitter.com/cgenco/status/1256948882065494017

Overall, I'd say if speed of development is a priority, then it may be easier going for a ready-made bootstrap template or UI component library. If flexibility and customization is a priority, then go for TailwindUI.

jerriep··on Show HN: New bootstrap model for startups – VC but with freelancers
I understand that. My issue is with the fact that (a) you make claims about earning more which you cannot back up with numbers and (b) you do not have any obvious disclaimers stating that this is a high-risk proposition and that the freelancers may just as well never see a single cent of return on their time.

So I am taking issue with the fact that your claims are deceptive.

jerriep··on Show HN: New bootstrap model for startups – VC but with freelancers
What is your proof that I will earn more as a freelancer?

As a freelancer, I have been approached a few times over my 20+ year career by people to work for free in exchange for future revenue share. I have declined this each time and on each occasion, when I followed up a few years (or even few months) down the line, the venture was dead.

So in my personal experience, there is basically zero chance of getting that future income. But I am sure there are some people that have success, so I will grant there is a chance, albeit small.

Yet you make claims about earning more and building my pension. I think this is misleading without actual proof that there is very high certainty that it will work out in the freelancer's favour.

jerriep··on Ask HN: How do you hire international remote employees?
A few years ago I worked for Auth0 and they made use of a Professional Employer Organization that took care of the logistics and compliance around hiring remote employees in various countries. If I remember correctly, they made use of a company called Globalization Partners [1], but there are plenty of these organizations around.

Auth0's CEO also did a talk [2] a few years back about building a remote workforce and he discussed some of these compliance issues from around the 16 min mark onwards.

jerriep··on Show HN: A fair, simple and free alternative to freelancing platforms
I think the explanation you have above ("...for people who haven’t met on a platform and need a framework to engage in a standard deal") does not come across in your website copy. My impression from your website was that it was just an alternative to Upwork, etc.

Perhaps consider making it more clear what it is you do - something like "Contract and escrow service for freelancers" or something along that line, rather than the current "A fair, simple and free alternative...".

Also, the flow diagram under "How it works" is helpful, but please don't repeat the animation. I was still busy reading the part under what happens when the client rejects when the diagram was cleared and the animation started again. Even better would be if you don't animate it at all as I think it goes too fast for non-native English readers such as myself.

Best of luck with the platform!

jerriep··on Krispy Kreme mule will be allowed to continue operating
This reminds me of domestic flights in Thailand from Bangkok to Chiang Mai where it is common to see Krispy Kreme mules.

There are no Krispy Kreme stores in Chiang Mai but the people in Chiang Mai seems to prefer it over other Doughnut shops in the city. So, when locals fly up from Bangkok to Chiang Mai it is fairly common for them to take up a few boxes of Krispy Kreme for their friends and family.

jerriep··on Open letter to all developers with blogs
Toptal is a big offender with this. I asked them before to do this and they declined. I understand there are some evergreen content out there, but anything related to technology does not fall into that category and having a date is important to understand if the content is likely out of date.
jerriep··on Stack Overflow Inc. Fiasco: Timeline
Yeah, I share your feelings on this and this is one of the reasons I work alone for clients of my choosing
jerriep··on Ask HN: Has anyone had success as a “dev partner” for a SaaS co
I am just starting out on this route, so I cannot give you any indication of whether or not it will be successful (yet). My product (https://www.usecloudpress.com/) integrates with various Content Management Systems, so I am reaching out to the people working at those CMSs to try and reach their end users.

I have had some early feedback from some of the users of these CMSs, and the feedback was very valuable in shaping the product.

jerriep··on Ask HN: How to handle sales tax for SaaS side projects?
I use Paddle and so far I am happy with them. The integration was simple enough and their support has been responsive.

I cannot use Stripe in my country, so I had to look for alternatives. Paddle is more expensive, but they have many things built in that you would have to pay extra for on Stripe. One of those is the handling of sales tax. The other, which I will implement soon, is built-in handling of affiliates.

jerriep··on Ask HN: As a software developer, why do you think blogging is necessary?
I won't say it is necessary, but I like to blog about issues I run into which I could not find a well-documented solution to on the web. It is my way to help someone else in the future who runs into the same issues.

Besides that, it has also proven to be a valuable lead-generation tool for freelance work.

jerriep··on Ask HN: Do you ask to see the codebase before taking a job?
At my previous company, I asked to have a look at the code base before joining. The reason was that this was a system that has been in development for the past 13 years and I wanted to get an idea of how well they handle tech-debt on such an old code base.

The application was developed in C# and ASP.NET and I ended up being quite impressed with how the team handled this. When developing a new feature they made a point to clean up the code they touched to make use of newer language and frameworks features. Also, from time-to-time, there were bigger efforts to clean up specific areas of the code.

This was a 13-year old code base that was in many parts in better condition than many greenfield projects I have seen.

It definitely made my choice to join the team easier.

jerriep··on Ask HN: Did you learn any life changing lessons this year?
I went the same route. After six years of freelancing and remote work, I decided to head back to a permanent job and into the office to seek out the community that it offers.
jerriep··on Ask HN: Imagine you were set for life. How would you spend the next ten years?
For many of the past 6 years, I actually had the freedom to do what I wanted and I naturally gravitated back to software development, so that's where I will spend most of my time - likely working on open-source libraries and utilities to help other developers.

I would, of course, structure my days differently and work fewer hours.

Other than that I'd also use the time to take courses about topics and learning skills outside of my typical areas of interest to build up a broader knowledge base.

jerriep··on Ask HN: Ethical analytics for blog?
This is something I really wish Netlify will provide out of the box. Since they are serving the content, they should be able to provide at least some basic server-side analytics. I am also just interested in basic stats like you.

I have pinged them about this, but at the time this was not something they were planning to add soon.
