jeremy_k··on Ask HN: People that write blog posts – why?
Combination of giving back and trying to give insight into myself as an engineer.

On giving back - Throughout my career I've read tons of blog posts that have given me the information I needed to get started or un-stuck on a task. I hope when I write about things that someone out there may wonder 'how do I X?' and my blog post shows up when googling.

On giving insight into myself - I've had people reach out while I was doing a job search that said they looked over my blog posts and that gave them a positive signal which led them to reach out to me for a position.

jeremy_k··on Ghostty 1.0
Makes a lot of sense, I fall into the same bucket as you so thank you for the response. I use the terminal to start up services and issue git commands. Beyond that, not too much.
jeremy_k··on Ghostty 1.0
Same request. As someone who uses the standard Teriminal application on my MBP I'm wondering what benefits I might find from Ghostty
jeremy_k··on Ruby 3.4.0
Use asdf (https://asdf-vm.com/) to manage your Ruby versions.

You should be able to do

$ asdf plugin add ruby

$ asdf list all ruby (you'll see 3.4.1, the latest is available)

$ asdf install ruby 3.4.1

And now you can use Ruby 3.4.1 with no issues. Follow that up with

$ gem install bundler

$ gem install rails

$ rails new ...

jeremy_k··on Day Zero – Build Good Web Apps with the Zero Sync Engine
Congrats on the launch! Extremely excited to start using Zero on a side project I've been working on over the next couple weeks.
jeremy_k··on Optimizing Ruby's JSON, Part 2
Well I learned something new that default arguments in Ruby can be expressions.

def dump(obj, anIO = (no_args_set = true; nil), limit = nil, kwargs = nil)

I love that trick because it exploits the fact that, like pretty much everything in Ruby, arguments’ default values are expressions. This trick is most commonly used when you need to know if an argument was passed as nil or just not passed

Pretty cool way to do nil checking

jeremy_k··on Speeding up Ruby by rewriting C in Ruby
Super interesting. I didn't know that YJIT was written in Rust.
jeremy_k··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (December 2024)
Location: Portland, OR Remote: Yes

Willing to relocate: Not currently

Technologies: Ruby On Rails, Javascript, Typescript, React, Next.js

Résumé/CV: https://jeremykreutzbender.com/cv

Email: jeremy.kreutzbender@gmail.com

I have 12 years experience working as a full stack engineer, primarily with Ruby on Rails and React based frontends. My previous position was an early engineer at a startup working in the infrastructure / platform engineering space developing software to enable Preview Environments as a service.

Looking for my next position in a larger organization at a Senior / Tech Lead level. I would prefer working in an organization that uses Ruby as that is where my expertise lies but it isn't a hard requirement.

I'm a product focused engineer who enjoys thinking through and delivering great product and user experiences. I've worked on consumer facing websites, built internal applications, and helped build the aforementioned SaaS in the devtools space.

jeremy_k··on Ask HN: What's the one feature you'd want in a GitHub productivity tool?
A chronological list of all the commits that affected a line of code. I've often gone and looked at a line, looked at the blame for that line, and then had to traverse backwards through history to find where the change I'm interested in happened. Using the GitHub UI, this takes a considerable amount of clicks.

1) Click on a file 2) Click blame 3) Click the parent commit SHA 4) Click View File 5) Click blame

Repeat as you traverse back in history.

jeremy_k··on Show HN: Self-Host Next.js in Production
I believe the intent of OpenNext is to allow you to run your Next.js applications in a serverless manner, same as Vercel.
jeremy_k··on Gleam: A Basic Introduction
Gleam has been great as I've started messing around with it recently. Coming from primarily Ruby, it feels much different and I'm liking expanding my thought process around programming. I'm struggling a bit with learning how to think in the type system though. Without unions and a requirement that case statements all return a single type, I just haven't quite grasped the right pattern to make it all click. Enjoying the process none the less.
jeremy_k··on Show HN: One – A new React framework unifying web, native and local-first
The answer is you won't have to. I asked in the Replicache discord if there was any more public info on Zero and the creator linked to this notion document https://replicache.notion.site/Introducing-Zero-8ce1b1f184aa...

Basically Zero will run in the browser and has it's own server which will exist next your database. So you can do all your database management through Rails and there is a section about Custom Mutators where if you need to pipe data through to AR to have it run callbacks, that is possible.

jeremy_k··on Show HN: One – A new React framework unifying web, native and local-first
Got it. So you're aiming to be a full stack framework. Let's say I want to keep all my business logic and schema in Rails. But I want a UI for web + native, would One work in this case? It is kind of where my lack of knowledge about how Zero works is causing my confusion on all this.
jeremy_k··on Show HN: One – A new React framework unifying web, native and local-first
Rails mentioned!

As a long time Rails dev who has primarily worked in stacks of Rails APIs and React UIs, does One fit into this category?

I'm excited about local first, but I haven't played around with any of the existing solutions because I was hoping to get my hands dirty with Zero. Thus I come from a point of ignorance. Are there any limitations? Will Zero need adapters to different frameworks or does it hook directly into your running postgres instance so the backend doesn't matter?

Looking for my next position in potentially a larger organization, but I could be open to a startup again.

jeremy_k··on Evolving GitHub Issues
I agree. The issue with Issues and Discussions is no one knows where to put content. Most falls into Issues because Discussions aren't always enabled and Issues were the original dumping ground.

It would be nice to know that if you want to ask random questions or get guidance on how to use the project, go to Discussions. If you're looking for real bug reports, go to Issues. I'm not sure how to enforce Issues being only bug reports though. The first thing that comes to mind is having a triaging mechanism, but that puts more onus on maintainers to actually look through everything submitted and make a decision on it.

jeremy_k··on Atlassian Acquires Loom
We use Gather too; it's amazing for real time collaboration. I use Loom to summarize work and send updates to a larger audience in an async fashion.
jeremy_k··on v0: Generate UI with simple text prompts
Very excited to use this. I recently started working on rebuilding my personal website and using that learn about RSC / App Router. As I started down the path, I learned that ChakraUI (which we use at work with Pages Router) doesn't work with RSC. I knew of shadcn/ui but I have literally zero experience using Tailwind; I'm sure I'll be able to figure it out, but having something like v0 will vastly improve my speed at which I can build my website and learn from generated examples. For someone with no design chops I can't wait to start playing around.
jeremy_k··on Inngest raises $3M seed to build the reliable workflow platform for every dev
Came here to ask the same thing. The screenshot on the landing page looks very similar to Temporal.
jeremy_k··on Kubernetes SidecarContainers feature is merged
Yep, I was looking into running Jobs with Sidecars awhile back and came across this issue. I was actually surprised this morning to see a link on HN be in the "already read" state. Nice to see this feature merged, however our Cluster is on 1.25 I think? Probably a ways away from being able to use this.
jeremy_k··on Ask HN: How important is production like data to your development process?
Is your complete copy of the database custom? Is it repeatable? Like if you wanted to test deleting data and afterwards you wanted a new clean copy, would you be able to get it?
jeremy_k··on Ask HN: How important is production like data to your development process?
I agree. For RDS, AWS will create nightly snapshots for the production data. Then it would be up to the company to set up an additional pipeline to take that snapshot, scrub the data, and create a new snapshot which would get used by the developers. Not an easy task, but the benefits are there.

And getting the most up to date data would be the same process. Create a new snapshot, run the scrubbing process, create a new scrubbed snapshot, get the database to the developers.

jeremy_k··on We raised a bunch of money
I've thought a lot about this too. Their blog posts are consistently interesting and well written. I wonder how much of their success is related to the product marketing as well?
jeremy_k··on Reddit.com appears to be having an outage
Not true at all in regards to 10+ years ago. Once at week, if not more, Reddit fails to load for me. I refresh the page and it appears I've been logged out. Continue refreshing the page until my session is revived and things are back to normal. I'll often open a post and the header will load but Reddit will fail to load the comments with a click to retry loading comments.
jeremy_k··on Ask HN: What would you do if you had the summer off as a technologist?
Play a lot of golf
jeremy_k··on Creating AI assistant with GPT and Ruby and Redis using embeddings
Thanks for that. The taking a test with open notes analogy makes a lot of sense.

Given that knowledge, as an end user it seems I would want to spend my time ensuring that the embedding data being selected is as good as possible.

jeremy_k··on Creating AI assistant with GPT and Ruby and Redis using embeddings
Thanks for the explanation. Do you think that because GPT-X will likely have more base training than an open source model someone attempts to train themselves, the outcomes may end up being better if say the fine tuning and embedding were the same for both options?
jeremy_k··on Creating AI assistant with GPT and Ruby and Redis using embeddings
I can't say I'm very well versed in all of this but I was asking my coworkers today about whether embeddings were the way forward or if doing your own training would be more beneficial. Or even yet, could you take an open source model and train it specifically on just your content; would that wield better results?

Expanding context seems like an approach, but if you're trying to get an answer about your company's documentation, why would you need the entirety of GPT-X?

jeremy_k··on Show HN: GPT Repo Loader – load entire code repos into GPT prompts
https://github.com/mpoon/gpt-repository-loader/pull/17/ If you look at this PR, he had ChatGPT write the tests for him.

He wrote the issue on https://github.com/mpoon/gpt-repository-loader/issues/16 and summarized https://github.com/mpoon/gpt-repository-loader/discussions/1...

"Open an issue describing the improvement to make Construct a prompt - start with using gpt_repository_loader.py on this repo to generate the repository context, then append the text of the opened issue after the --END-- line."

Feels like it needs to add a little Github client to be able to automatically append the text of issues at the end of the output. I'm sure ChatGPT can write a Github client in Python no problem.

jeremy_k··on Launch HN: Depot (YC W23) – Fast Docker Builds in the Cloud
It sounds like the SSD provides the layer cache with `--cache-to=type=local`? Does Depot support connecting additional VMs to the volume if someone wants to scale up? I've been meaning to look into the new S3 cache to solve this issue.
