jeremiahlee··on Medium is not the home for your ideas
Another reason: today I clicked on a Netflix Engineering blog post I saw on LinkedIn. Medium blocked me from reading and said I had to subscribe because I had read too many articles.

Netflix has the skill and money to operate its own blog without Medium putting up a paywall over its content.

jeremiahlee··on Failed SquadGoals: Spotify doesn’t use the Spotify model and neither should you
I used CSS's proximity snapping. It doesn't override your scroll, but it does snap the top of a section if the section is relatively close to the top of the screen when you stop scrolling. It works much better in Firefox and Safari than Chromium. For large screen viewing, the layout is intended to take up the full screen.

I am experimenting with magazine layouts and editorial design. I'm sorry if you don't like it. That's ok. I created this for me and just decided to let people in.

jeremiahlee··on When your coworker does great work, tell their manager
My current employer uses https://bonus.ly/ and I love it. The money is small (a dollar here and there), but the recognition is public and reports are sent to managers about their teams. People can also comment and add to someone's recognition. This has created a few moments of someone getting over $100 from a tens of coworkers for something helpful.
jeremiahlee··on Element wins deal to supply half a million licences to two German states
Digital sovereignty is becoming differentiating. Open source, on servers you control, end-to-end encryption by default. This is how European SaaS can win.
jeremiahlee··on Microsoft adding support for custom '+' email addresses in Office 365
I really wish FastMail would add an option to use a minus instead of a plus since most forms properly handle minuses, but many do not properly handle pluses.
jeremiahlee··on Microsoft adding support for custom '+' email addresses in Office 365
How exactly should I go about dealing with Universal Pictures Home Entertainment under the CAN-SPAM Act?

Individuals cannot sue under CAN-SPAM Act and I don't think any state Attorney General is going to bring a suit on my behalf because they didn't accommodate a plus alias.

jeremiahlee··on Microsoft adding support for custom '+' email addresses in Office 365
I would agree with this technique, but it’s not possible due to the high number of services that don’t permit “+” in the email address or break because they don’t URI encode it. I have several services I will never be able to unsubscribe from because of the latter—and yes, I tried manually URI encoding it and changing the form fields with dev tools.
jeremiahlee··on App suddenly crashing on startup due to FBSDKRestrictiveDataFilterManager.m
It's also crashing Deezer, but sadly few care.

jeremiahlee··on Hapi.js project is reaching its conclusion
I hope Hapi and Joi can find a home in the Open JS Foundation.
jeremiahlee··on Hapi.js project is reaching its conclusion
From the Hapi Slack:

> eran 6:38 PM

> Over the past few years I have tried many different ways to keep my work on the hapi ecosystem sustainable. I was trying to secure enough funds to keep the lights on but also to innovate and improve the framework. This has worked well for a while but over the past year both commercial licenses and sponsorship dropped to an all time low. At the current funding level I can only address critical issues and keep things stable. It doesn’t allow me to invest in the future of the framework, add meaningful new features, or keep up with community support. After 5 years of working outside of a major company, I have reached the point where I am no longer finding this work rewarding. The resources available do not allow me to spend the kind of quality time needed to have a meaningful engagement with this project. I no longer believe that this can be fixed or reversed. Go through another round of begging people for money in hope of another year or so for project runway is not appealing to me.I don’t know exactly how this will unfold. I plan to communicate this to the wider hapi community over the next few days to start a conversation and see what’s the best way for me to bring this project to an appropriate conclusion. This channel is the beginning of this process. While I am not expecting others to take over the work, I have not ruled that out yet.I want you to know that regardless of how this ends up, I am going to keep supporting the project until the end of the year. After that, I am going to offer some kind of continued commercial support for at least 2 years. I still need to work out the plan for what that support looks like and make sure that it is priced in a way that allows me to offer it.

jeremiahlee··on Show HN: Deta – A cloud platform for building and deploying apps
Having a database is a useful advantage over Vercel.
jeremiahlee··on Lightweight Alternatives to Google Analytics
I have been a happy Plausible subscriber for the last 3 months. It's handled 100k+ unique visitors a month with no problem.
jeremiahlee··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
Getting a lot of writing done and trying out magazine-style layouts for the Web. My first post was about my experience working at Spotify: https://www.jeremiahlee.com/posts/failed-squad-goals/
jeremiahlee··on Solid irony here: Sonos called out Spotify for criticizing Apple's closed system
I was a product manager for the Spotify C SDK. Thousands of smart speakers use it without problem. Any pain in not using it was a problem Sonos created for itself.

Sonos not liking the implementation details that were acceptable to oodles of other smart speaker manufacturers is not an example of Spotify not being open. Totally agree Spotify could improve the DX, but not a matter of openness.

jeremiahlee··on Client-side content encryption
Nothing stops someone from creating a competitor to Coil that also uses the Web Monetization API emerging standard and that competitor accepting subscriptions in another currency, including crypto. That’s one reason why it’s such a compelling idea.
jeremiahlee··on Client-side content encryption
The Web Monetization API standard Coil is based on does not reveal knowledge of what content is being paid for.
jeremiahlee··on Client-side content encryption
I am quite excited about the Web Monetization API and Coil’s implementation.

jeremiahlee··on Vercel, formerly Zeit, raises $21M Series A
I've been a customer for 3 years. `now` has felt like such a great evolution of the Heroku experience, which seemed to stop evolving after it got acquired by Salesforce.

Zeit focused on all types of applications when it started, not just static frontend and FaaS. I wish it would return to supporting apps beyond JAMstack.

jeremiahlee··on Show HN: LinCV – transform LinkedIn profile to printable CV in 5 seconds
The LinkedIn export includes stuff you probably don’t want to include for someone viewing your CV outside of LinkedIn. There isn’t a way to customize it, which is why there are so many tools for doing so.
jeremiahlee··on A simpler, more organized Slack
My favorite Slack feature was never knowing for sure which of the 5 buttons in the upper right corner contained the thing I was looking for.

It's that sort of uncertainty that reminded me of life's uncertainties in general on a regular basis.

jeremiahlee··on Ask HN: Best Stripe Alternatives?
I can recommend against using Zuora and Adyen based on my two years of working on a large scale migration to them.
jeremiahlee··on What happened to Mint?
Mint became a loss leader to sell tax preparation software.

jeremiahlee··on Mozilla Wants Young People to Consider ‘Ethical Issues’ Before Taking Tech Jobs
I'm so glad this message is being given more credibility. I made a similar plea in 2016 at the end of the only conference keynote I've ever been invited to give. https://www.jeremiahlee.com/posts/fitbit-api-strategy-and-pr...
jeremiahlee··on Launch HN: InsideSherpa (YC W19) – online courses to train then hire students
“While Sherpas became famous in the Western world for their service to climbers, they are no more synonymous with a porter (the actual profession) than say, Americans are to cowboys.”

Excellent post by someone else who made the mistake of using "Sherpa" in a company name, learning about cultural respect, and rebranding.

jeremiahlee··on Launch HN: InsideSherpa (YC W19) – online courses to train then hire students
Sherpa was the name for an ethnic group long before English speaking people decided to reduce a culture to a single job.
