jeffpersonified··on Tell HN: Anthropic no longer allowing Claude Code subscriptions to use OpenClaw
Less than 24hr notice on a Friday: either Anthropic is dropping S tier next week or they massively fumbled over the past 2 months in self owns and outages.
jeffpersonified··on Public Sans – A strong, neutral typeface
Looking forward to the National Design Studio getting it's arms around this
jeffpersonified··on IKEA Catalogs 1951-2021
The progression of the catalogue and furniture design from 1950 through to 1960 is remarkable. What a transformative time.
jeffpersonified··on Get HTTPS for free
This is not a tend. For instance, finding pure black in fine art or elsewhere is next to impossible and if you do it's a modern trend (not the opposite).
jeffpersonified··on A dose of perspective
Probably a lot of room for discussion here, but I think it's problematic to conflate this documentary trip with Watsi's general practices for dealing with patient information – doesn't appear that they gave out any of their patients' personal information in this piece, and they generally do a great job limiting the amount of information listed on any given patient's page.

Of course, there are a lot of health care needs that are by nature private or could endanger the patient well-being if it became public that some procedures were done. I believe they have an anonymous fund that receives a percentage of all donations to attend to just those types of issues.

If any information on any patient should be given out is a bit of a different question.

jeffpersonified··on We Built a Hacker News for Biotech
Designer News (news.layervault.com) has been doing quite well. It's been my go-to for design info for a while now.
jeffpersonified··on Zurb Foundation 5 Released
How is their inclusion of a medium break point not at the top of this thread? This is the most significant and noticeable addition to the Framework IMO.
jeffpersonified··on The Russia Left Behind
How long as the NYT been in beta anyway? It seems like quite a while now, and really look forward to the official release.
jeffpersonified··on The Russia Left Behind
I'm particularly curious what they're using these interactive stories for. Refining design or technique? Gauging user interest? Putting processes into place to speed up their development?

Really impressed either way.

jeffpersonified··on Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer to retire within 12 months
We've hit the Ballmer peak!
jeffpersonified··on Fertile Ground
I've been a rails developer for a while now, and contemplating whether or not to focus my energies on a js frontend framework or learning iOS. I think this post was all I needed to make a decision. Thanks Marco.
jeffpersonified··on NY official: Airbnb stay illegal; host fined $2,400
Curious, and I haven't heard many comments on this: does this set a precedent that other states are likely to follow, and if so, is this a serious threat to the Airbnb business?
jeffpersonified··on Come here and work on hard problems – except the ones on our doorstep
I tend to think a lot of the social programs that do exist in this city (and there are many – healthy san francisco, housing subsidies, dozens of shelters, and even more food programs) don't really address the root problem that causes such a disparity. For instance, I've a number of friends who work in the tenderloin with some of those same social programs, and they're perspective is that the housing subsidies that bring people to the tenderloin only exacerbate the issues that plague it.

It's not just warm weather that draws people to SF, but a plethora of social programs that are often poorly executed, underfunded, and addressed at superficial issues and not their core causes (education, for example).

jeffpersonified··on Stabilizing Ember Data
Agreed. I think it says a lot about Tom Dale and co., and have been really impressed with their responses in aggregate – it's probably been a long week for the Ember team.
jeffpersonified··on Stabilizing Ember Data
I've really loved using Backbone myself, and have very limited (simple, sample apps) with Ember. Ember comes with stronger conventions than backbone, giving one a fuller out-of-the-box application, which for some people and projects is more preferable.

I think, like many people have said, they're each intended for different use cases.

jeffpersonified··on The Ruby on Rails Tutorial for Rails 4.0 (beta)
I don't think there has been a single more valuable resource in my learning to build web applications. Thanks for your work, Michael.
jeffpersonified··on Zurb Launches Foundation 4
To me, the most interesting part of this is the switch to Zepto. Can people weigh in on its performance over jQuery, and the overall tradeoffs?
jeffpersonified··on Zurb Launches Foundation 4
You're not the only one.
jeffpersonified··on Zurb Launches Foundation 4
Zurb was built with the responsiveness from the beginning. That doesn't seem to have been the case with Bootstrap. I've found having a responsive site out of the box, without some of the headaches I've had trying to do the same with Bootstrap, is worth the costs of a smaller community. Plus, it doesn't look like every other Bootstrap site and is more easily customized.
jeffpersonified··on Jetstrap for Bootstrap
I think this is a great tool, and desperately wanted it to work. In fact, decided to try it out on a project I'm currently working on. That said, the autosaving has been causing me problems all morning. It's unclear when it saves, and because it seems to lack a manual saving feature I was unable to save the last 30 min of work. All lost after reloading the page reverted to the version I started with. Very frustrating.
jeffpersonified··on Anonymous Donor Pays for College of Every Student in Kalamazoo
Having grown up in Michigan, this isn't anything particularly new. Kalamazoo has been at this for a while (perhaps the donor), and although it's phenomenal, I'm surprised it's at the top of HN.

jeffpersonified··on Why You Should Quit Your Job to Be a Founder
"quitting your job to be a founder does NOT instill you with the necessary skills and mindset to be a successful founder."

I don't think I advised anyone to quit one's job and become a founder in the strict sense. Dorsey redefined what it means to be a founder (someone foundational to an organization, regardless of when they joined) and I advised that the skills founders possess are valuable as an employee and founder alike.

"Growth hacker" => marketing "hustler" => sales "ninja" => ...um
jeffpersonified··on Why You Should Quit Your Job to Be a Founder
Really appreciate that. Best of luck - sounds like we're in similar spots in life.
jeffpersonified··on Why You Should Quit Your Job to Be a Founder
Thanks for the feedback. I'm young as well and working through debt. The point isn't necessarily to venture out and start a company but to begin inculcating a founder-like outlook on how you work and approach life, even in the largest organizations. Finding opportunity, approaching work with a beginner's mind, etc. can be done in any organization, large or small.
jeffpersonified··on How I Learned to Defrag My Brain
In just skimming through comments, it's interesting to note how many people already keep this habit, myself included - my spark file can be found in the back cover of my notebooks... Keepin' it analog.
