jeffio··on How to Work Remotely and Still Be the Best
You definitely need a dedicated office space. Especially when you got kids in the house! When we were looking for a house, having a sweet office space was one of the major factors. My office is away from the family common areas, on a different floor, and the noise I hear is minimal if any.
jeffio··on Startup Parents: You Are Not Alone
Thanks pg, I edited to make it more clear.
jeffio··on Best Place To Start A Company If You Have Kids

jeffio··on Working From Home Again: 2 Years Later
I hear ya taking little breaks. I'm all for taking advantage of the benefits of working from home. It's just when they get out of hand is where it gets dangerous.

I hope this time around it works out well for you. Thanks for the note.

jeffio··on The Future of Markdown
We recently added Markdown as an option in our hosted reseller CMS (YikeSite) in hopes that some of our customers would choose it over the WYSIWYG editor.

You can play with it here: http://www.markdowncms.com

If there was a standardized Markdown, we would implement that for sure.

jeffio··on The lifestyle business bullshit (2009)
I work from home and I eat breakfast, lunch and dinner with my kids. I've built a successful startup and am launching another without compromising anything. It IS possible and our breed of entrepreneur is more common however underrepresented in the startup community.
jeffio··on Men In Tech
I see what you did there.
jeffio··on Ask HN: more sites like HN
http://inbound.org/ is HN for marketing and is awesome.
jeffio··on Time Zones
Such a brilliant way to market your product, LetsFreckle. Better than any adwords or facebook ads campaign I'm sure. Hope you're tracking conversions from this.

Content marketing at its finest. Great job.

jeffio··on Happy Family, Successful Start-up. Impossible?
It is definitely possible and I do this on a daily basis. I work from home, have 2 kids and have founded two startups. It's not without its challenges that's for sure...

Here is a post I wrote for parents in the same situation as me: http://maplebutter.com/superhero-tricks-for-startup-parents/

And here is another post I did last week summarizing 20 great articles on this topic: http://jeff.io/posts/20-inspirational-articles-for-startup-p...

I am always keen to read comments when these kinds of posts hit HN. We are not alone STARTUP PARENTS!!! :)

jeffio··on Superhero Tricks For Startup Parents
Guilty as charged!
jeffio··on Racism in Tech
If you look at fortune 500 companies, most are run by tall, old white men over 50. The reality in today's world is that if you're a short black woman (for example), you're up against huge discrimination that runs deep in mainstream society.

I found this article the other day that Female Fortune 500 CEOs were at an "all time high". Female CEOs represent just about 3.6% of Fortune 500 company heads. That's 18, a new record. And it's not a very multicultural bunch: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/26/female-fortune-500-...

The issue is not "crap", it's a very real issue that a lot of people experience every day. Thank-you to Brad Feld for putting the spotlight on this issue into the tech world, at least for a few hours.

jeffio··on Poll: How many generations removed are you from immigration?
First Nations (Native American) on my father's side (so, 1,000?) — and 4 generations on my mother's.
jeffio··on Share HN: StarChart.me statistics from 1 day on HN front page
Yesterday we launched public URLs for a child's chart. We send this link out to subscribed relatives if a child gets a star for the day. Here is an example… I think I will link this up on the landing page.

jeffio··on Share HN: StarChart.me statistics from 1 day on HN front page
Normally I would do a video and spend some more time on the marketing page but I thought I'd put together "something" before sending it out. I had no idea so many people would be checking it out. There are some examples on my blog http://jeff.io so I think what I'll do now is bring in the screenshots into the landing page.
jeffio··on Show HN Parents: StarChart.me — Online star chart for kids
Ha, it looks like I registered this domain name a month after star.me in 2008. As I mentioned in the post, I have been using this for a couple of years with my son and only just now decided to open it up.
jeffio··on Show HN Parents: StarChart.me — Online star chart for kids
How about "Joey" is working towards a "new stuffy" (or whatever). When he goes potty 10 times, he gets a new stuffy.

I was also thinking that maybe there doesn't need to be an end reward… getting 10 stars may be the reward in itself.

jeffio··on Show HN Parents: StarChart.me — Online star chart for kids
Yes, like for every 10 lines of code you write you get 1 star towards 10 minutes on hacker news. 10 stars later and you're golden!
jeffio··on Show HN Parents: StarChart.me — Online star chart for kids
Fixed! Thanks.

jeffio··on Auto Scale your Heroku Apps with Hero Scale
Yes, I will probably wait for oath before signing up and checking it out.
jeffio··on 5-Year-Old Designs an iPhone App (video)
Update: Some people have asked if I've done any apps with Anim yet and yes we have! I should have linked it in the original post but anyways, the app is called "DJ Baby", we created it last year. It's an iPhone app (http://bit.ly/djbabyitunes) but we also have a free flash version here: http://www.cometcoast.com/djbaby.
jeffio··on 5-Year-Old Designs an iPhone App (video)

jeffio··on 5-Year-Old Designs an iPhone App (video)
I just read this outloud to Anim and he says he wants to be able to "pick all the spells in Harry Potter". I think the rock-paper-scissors gameplay would be pretty smart. I'll see if I can convince him :) Oh, he just said that you could have the game for free because of your good ideas.

Thanks for your really detailed reply — and everybody else's too! Now I'm thinking I'll have to build this for him. My wife's going to shake her head if I tell her that I just added another sideproject to my list of sideprojects.

jeffio··on 5-Year-Old Designs an iPhone App (video)
Anim comes from an Ojibway (Native American) word meaning thunderbird. We pronounce it "ah-neem".
jeffio··on 5-Year-Old Designs an iPhone App (video)
Well the game he's got in mind is a Harry Potter game so I wouldn't be able to create it without getting copyright. But he is talking about maybe somebody who made the other iPhone Harry Potter game will see his video and make his game :)
jeffio··on HN Parents Have An Average Of 1.7 "Little Startups" (Infographic)
All very good points. Thank-you all for your feedback.
jeffio··on HN Parents Have An Average Of 1.7 "Little Startups" (Infographic)
The sample size is low. As I mentioned in the blog post, it was admittedly a crude method of getting data.

But it was a fun exercise for me to create this. Hope some people get value out of it.

I'm getting a steady stream of HN parents sending in their surveys so we'll see if we can get a better sampling size. Send yours in if you can spare a moment away from your 1.7 kids! :D

If you're a HN parent please fill out the survey so I can get some better data :) https://animikii.wufoo.com/forms/hacker-news-little-startups...
