jedmeyers··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
Another thing with taxing unrealized gains is that no one in the government is willing to return any money if the unrealized losses happened. Somehow it's all hunky-dory when someone loses 1M in stock value, but as soon as someone's stock went up 1M they all want to tax it right away.
jedmeyers··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
> This is my experience with all Microsoft software. The worst thought out, buggy, untested pile of crap.

Their PM motto is "quality is a feature", and obviously not everybody needs all the features.

jedmeyers··on Volkswagen planning to cut up to 100.000 jobs globally
You are in for a surprise if you think latest generation Toyotas or Hondas will be less costly to repair. Just look at the recent debacle with the V35A-FTS.
jedmeyers··on Egypt Is Building a New Nile
This does not look to be “military” spending on Ukraine, it’s all spending.
jedmeyers··on Egypt Is Building a New Nile
> As of 2026 Q2, the U.S. disbursed over $116 billion in aid to Ukraine and is obligated for a total of $177b. Yes the rest is being disbursed despite Trump's political antics

Where are you getting those numbers from?

jedmeyers··on Is my blue your blue?
Same here, it's often neither blue nor green, so this experiment is pointless.

And by having more of those blanks filled humans might be able to come up with much better extrapolations than what we have right now.
jedmeyers··on Palantir employees are starting to wonder if they're the bad guys
> Nobody in the cabinet can speak up and overrule his whimsy?

Who will be overruling that "someone in the cabinet", when things start going the wrong way again? There is always someone on top, and in the US it's the sitting President.

jedmeyers··on War in Iran exposes US's shift from a global guardian to an arbiter of chaos
The harbinger?
jedmeyers··on How I'm Productive with Claude Code
> It's about on par with the ridiculousness of LOC implying code quality.

Most effective engineers on the brownfield projects I've worked on, usually deleted more LOC than they've added, because they were always looking to simplify the code and replace it with useful (and often shorter) abstractions.

jedmeyers··on Writing your own BEAM
> I mean, it's literally a link on a web page. You click the link, it takes you to The BEAM Book's page.

Now instead of putting the details in the title, you have me reading paragraphs of text and clicking links to figure out what the author is talking about. Did I understand you correctly?

jedmeyers··on Writing your own BEAM
The curse of knowledge in this thread is mind boggling.
jedmeyers··on Writing your own BEAM
Because of you ask a person who works on Beam about “the Beam book” thats the one they are going to recommend. Who knows that the BEAM book is literally called “the BEAM Book”? There are many books like that, “the SRE book” is actually Site Reliability Engineering: How Google Runs Production Systems, etc.
jedmeyers··on Sig Sauer citing national security to keep documents from public
> I still doubt they're gonna face any serious penalties

Having to fix all P320 fire control units they've sold so far will put them out of business. You don't even need any additional penalties on top of that. I just hope they can spin off Optics division before that happens.

jedmeyers··on Air Force unit suspends use of Sig Sauer pistol after shooting death of airman
And it still does not help, because the safety only blocks the trigger but not the striker from firing, thus the Air Force incident that started, this topic, became possible.
jedmeyers··on Bosch's brake-by-wire system may be the next big leap in automotive tech
It feels like you are pressing on a tennis ball, zero real feedback whatsoever. Acura MDX has had the brake-by-wire system fo a while now in the latest generation.
jedmeyers··on Ask HN: How do you prevent the impact of social media on your children?
It does require a digital to analog converter, though.

jedmeyers··on 3M executives convinced a scientist forever chemicals in human blood were safe
> What we need is much better whistleblower programs.

Unfortunately, not many organizations will have the aligned incentives. If businesses that conduct potentially dangerous operations, were required to get an insurance, then insurance companies would have incentive to pay money to the whistleblower vs paying out a much larger claim down the line.

jedmeyers··on Redis is forked
What AWS/GCP/Azure provide with managed Redis is much much more than just a UI. There are a lot of technical issues that come with running Redis reliably in the cloud. I’d say UI work is probably 5% of that at most.
jedmeyers··on Only real people can patent inventions – not AI, US Government says
And thus we usually do not have patents for songs, only copyright protections.

jedmeyers··on Hundreds of thousands trafficked to work as online scammers in SE Asia, says UN
My friend in Eastern Europe ran a bot farm in WoW. He ran bots on his computers that farmed resources, then sold resources for gold and then sold the gold to Chinese for end-user resale. The only labor involved was hiring some college students and paying them for each top-level character they progress that can be used for farming. He even bought my character for $50 when I stopped playing.
jedmeyers··on Refusing to teach kids math will not improve equity
A lot of people in positions of power are currently obsessed with achieving equality of outcomes (aka equity) and dumbing down to the lowest common denominator is an only working way to achieve that goal for large groups of people.
jedmeyers··on Tuition costs have risen 710% since 1983
> Currently, Universities have no incentives to control costs in any way.

Most universities are the supporters of the existing government structure, so it seems to be a mutually beneficial relationship.

jedmeyers··on First people sickened by Covid-19 were scientists at WIV: US government sources
How are you getting to "herd immunity" without "immunity"? No one said saying about 100% of the population being 100% immune, it's a strawman.
