What about the incentive structure for the regulators? Are we going to change that one as well?
jedmeyers··on Section 230 Explained
How do you know who is actually lying if half the information is removed from the sources you usually read?

Are you aware of the term "public easement"? In many jurisdictions you are not able to block public access to your "private property" once the public gets accustomed to accessing that property. Same thing should apply here. You don't get to just open your private property for everyone to use and then close it for people you don't like politically many years later.
jedmeyers··on Google Interview Questions Deconstructed: The Knight’s Dialer
> each asking about 2 questions

Google does not usually ask 2 questions. You may/should get harder follow-ups to the original question, which is a good sign.

jedmeyers··on Google pub/sub released an ordering feature
The queue entrypoint is not always the same process either, especially in a system like Pub/Sub.
jedmeyers··on Google pub/sub released an ordering feature
If events are generated by different processes you cannot really guarantee that time is exactly the same for them, unless you do something fancy to ensure that.
jedmeyers··on Cities Experiment with Remedy for Poverty: Cash, No Strings Attached
> Consumer Reports that have to maintain a long-running reputation

Tell me more about the "long-running" reputation of Consumer Reports. I will then tell you why Suzuki Samurai is no longer sold in the US.

jedmeyers··on Cities Experiment with Remedy for Poverty: Cash, No Strings Attached
"Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars."

But then there were LeBron Nikes made in China with cheap labor and sold for $225. Those were the kind of shoes poor people bought using their credit cards.

> if there's another hearing.

Oh, no, another hearing. I am sure he is very afraid of another strongly worded letter after that one.

We constantly see executives and officials lie at those hearings, yet they face no repercussions whatsoever.

Is that the same social democracy as in Russian Social Democratic Labour Party?
jedmeyers··on A dying teenager who wanted world peace (and love)
> Yes, however a lot of that is done to produce products that are unnecessary

If you have to figure out which product are “necessary” and which are not - you don’t have enough resources “to go around” by definition.

jedmeyers··on A dying teenager who wanted world peace (and love)
As long as you have limited resources to manage, your curiosity will go nowhere without the power to obtain resources to satisfy that curiosity. I too love to dream about how great life is going to be once we all have unlimited resources.
jedmeyers··on Debugging Incidents in Google's Distributed Systems
The fact that the oncaller has been notified without an actual issue in a production system, is an issue in itself - incorrect monitoring/alerting. And will be addressed an the next production meeting.
jedmeyers··on The German Problem with Tor
> Maybe this generation in Europe trusts their government and thinks that its good.

Which is strange, since there are people alive today who's relatives were executed in camps by the democratically elected government of Germany. People who think that democratic government is somehow a panacea against tyranny are constantly being proven wrong by history. The modern example is Venezuela and the fact that Maduro's predecessor, Chávez was elected by the majority of the population.

jedmeyers··on With cops away, it’s like Capitol Hill is slipping back to the Pinkerton’s era
- police chases down and arrest the driver

It does not seem the perpetrator was running from the police, so they did not "chase" him. Accounts show that he was avoiding the protesters and police would him very quickly once he got to safety.

Yes, Trump to be wrong is much more important than finding an effective and cheap cure for the disease that stopped half the economy.
jedmeyers··on How the 2021 Ford F-150's onboard generator works
No one says it's not easy. Stealing mail is fairly easy too. Federal prison is not a fun place to be, though.
jedmeyers··on How the 2021 Ford F-150's onboard generator works
US has very strictly enforced laws against odometer tampering.

"Major defendants in large odometer fraud prosecutions have received prison terms of up to seven years under current Sentencing Guidelines which do not permit parole. Sentences in the 18 month to three year range are common." https://www.justice.gov/civil/case/federal-odometer-tamperin....

Police interactions, maybe. But actual crimes committed should be a relatively objective metric. Can we discuss that one or it’s not allowed for some reason?

Those things from big banks always remind me of the quote from Big Short: "Yeah, I think you mean that you've secured a net short position yourselves. So you're free to mark my swaps accurately for once because it's now in your interest to do so."
jedmeyers··on Li Wenliang
> reporting what he believes to be illegal conduct to congress one one side.

“Former” cia analyst that was directly involved in the events being investigated by the administration is reporting through his friends to an associate in Congress about an “illegal” conduct. Sounds a bit more like covering up former shady deals for his political friends.

jedmeyers··on Li Wenliang
> Vindman was fired but will surely land on his feet somewhere.

Was he "fired" or just reassigned? As far as I understand he is still an officer in the armed forces.

jedmeyers··on Li Wenliang
> it should be same whether the delivered news is favorable to you/us or not

The question is usually "is it favorable to the CIA/NSA or not?".

Favorable (Vindman/Cia<mare>lla) -> whistleblower

Unfavorable (Snowden) -> leaker

jedmeyers··on Li Wenliang
Which orders did Vindman follow and later was punished for, exactly? I would actually put Snowden as an example of a regime punishing the whistleblower.
jedmeyers··on “Breathability” Comparison of Commercial Outerwear Shell Layers (2018) [pdf]
Based on my PNW experience having a hard shell is rarely worth it, unless you are static. Otherwise softshell jackets is the way to go, much more breathable and fast drying.
