jedmeyers··on First people sickened by Covid-19 were scientists at WIV: US government sources
> because the original strain was unnatural, later strains would be less problematic as the virus reverted to its true (less problematic) nature

Is it possible for someone to speed up this process in a lab somewhere, like South Africa, and release the less problematic version to the public to achieve the herd immunity quicker?

jedmeyers··on Google cuts office space in Bay Area by more than a million square feet
You might have had 20 years of experience building products that don't need to scale for millions of concurrent users, if you consider all "purely internal architectural changes" to be lower priority than the customer facing work just because it's purely internal. And the Google guy might have tried to spend time scaling a product that will have five concurrent users, because "this is Google" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3t6L-FlfeaI). It's all about perspective, and CEO thought the other perspective was more valuable.

> Game needs to get the playerbase first, be interesting and competitive in the long run second and then...

Ain't nobody got time for dat. Push the new game out, organize two tournaments, recycle the game into the next iteration... Rinse and repeat.

jedmeyers··on All companies are fucked up
> I worked an office gig one time where my boss just stopped telling us what to do. We were just supposed to "know." For some people, this probably sounds amazing right? No corporate politics. No bullshit meetings. Just do whatever you feel like! It was great for half a heartbeat but then it turned into "Lord of the Flies" ... the inmates running the asylum sort of thing.

I see someone has worked at Valve.

jedmeyers··on Google is shutting down Stadia
Oh no, they have a plan to create a plan for layoffs, but as of right now there is no plan to layoff employees.
jedmeyers··on Gun owners’ private information leaked by California Attorney General
> Ask people if they like it when prosecutors charge a guy with 30 crimes for committing one act of armed robbery

This is usually resolved by not adding the jail times for the crimes, but by doing MAX(a, b, ...) on them. Prosecutors will suddenly only care about the most important ones.

jedmeyers··on ‘What a brutal business’: pop stars on life after the spotlight moves on
> Are college students taking their student loans and blowing it on "lavish lifestyles"?

Colleges certainly do. There is no market economy in giving out loans but yet there are no price and quality controls on the receiving end of the money.

jedmeyers··on Understanding the War in Ukraine
This might be a weird question, but if you are American, do you think Biden is a smart man with motives beyond his own gain? Does he really try to make USA better and works for the common person?
jedmeyers··on Russian forces invade Ukraine after Putin orders attack
You don’t understand, they are “nazi” because they are nationalists and support their country. So Russian nazis are going to attack Ukrainian nazis do “denazificate” them.

jedmeyers··on Google Is Forcing Me to Dump a Perfectly Good Phone
> You need to compensate Qualcomm for a pile of lost sales from people not getting new phones.

Why would people continue to buy phones with Qualcomm chips? The fact that my 4th gen iPad still works and my mom uses it to watch youtube and browse internet is one of the top 3 reasons I would pay a bit extra for Apple devices.

jedmeyers··on Stanford requires booster shots for all students
Our whole existence is a religious subject. And everything we do while we exist falls under it. Also no, it does not have to be organized to be a religion.
jedmeyers··on The CIA and the Media (1977)

jedmeyers··on Chess Grandmaster Kasparov on Mob Mentality and Groupthink
> The American "left" is soft right wing.

If by being "right wing" you mean strong authoritarianism and Mussolini-like fascism, then yes, American 'left' is right wing.

However, if right wing for you are conservative values, like family, independence, free speech, personal responsibility, and "judging by the content of the character, not the color of the skin" then American left is nowhere near the soft right position on any of those things. They are not even close to center.

jedmeyers··on Tech sector job interviews assess anxiety, not software skills (2020)
> Yes you can memorize an answer here, and the implementation of a binary tree - I think most people just do that.

If you are talking about a self-balancing binary search tree, then, yeah, most people will have to memorize the implementation, as it would take much more than an hour to implement correctly. But if you are talking about plan binary trees, most good engineers will be able to write a simple enough implementation for the interview in a couple of minutes. And it won't be from memory, it will come from _understanding_ of how the binary tree is structured. The beauty here is that there is no need to memorize the implementation, as it is much easier to remember the definition of a tree and then write an implementation based on that.

> why can they keep charging so much tuition

Because everyone keeps paying so much tuition. Why does _everyone_ can afford to pay so much is another question worth exploring.

jedmeyers··on Culdesac Tempe: The first car-free neighborhood built from scratch in the US
Membership-based shops and clubs seem to work much better than 'everyone can come' scheme. Even at Google the maker spaces require an intro class, and an approval from one of the managing members. And one can make a case that a googler is expected to be a more responsible person than a random member of the elite no-car community.

A very interesting bit of trivia: Soviet school math curriculum reform was conducted in the 60s under the leadership of Andrey Kolmogorov. Some of you may be familiar with his works, especially the Kolmogorov complexity.
jedmeyers··on NYC to mandate proof of vaccination for many indoor settings
> Being both unvaxed and unmasked is unnecessarily reckless toward others

Mandating an unapproved novel 'vaccine' while removing all responsibility from the manufacturers for the side effects is extremely reckless toward others.
