jebblue··on Feds bust through huge Tor-hidden child porn site using questionable malware
I'm glad they busted them but hopeful that using the technology to stop clearly bad guys does not lead to abuse of the ability to use the technology on a wider basis. It probably will though eventually. It would be great if use required the consensus of at least three courts and one of them federal.
jebblue··on Outlier Detection at Netflix
In the audio world we would have run the data through an FFT, not sure if you can do that with non-audio data.
jebblue··on Compare Java CVE to Chrome CVE
HN loves to see reports of Java vulnerabilities yet ignore far greater reports in terms of numbers and impact to the world.

Search also for "javascript cve", "html5 cvs", "css3 cve".

jebblue··on First Java Zero-Day Attack in Two Years Targets NATO and US Defense Organizations
Cookies are the hidden spyware far worse then ticking a checkbox that asks if you want to install something.
jebblue··on First Java Zero-Day Attack in Two Years Targets NATO and US Defense Organizations
Outside of security, an HTML5/CSS3/JaaScript site still can't do what a Java Applet could do 2 decades ago.

>> They are universally pretty terrible (as are, in my opinion/experience _most_ user interfaces running on any JVM).

Including web or just client side? If the same UI's that you consider terrible on the JVM were ported to say, well pick any language/platform and ported exactly but using your preferred language and platform features; would the interfaces now be better since they are implemented on your desired language/platform?

jebblue··on The Electric Car
"The iPhone demonstrated that smartphones are infinitely better than the feature phones which dominated the world in 2007."

The iPhone had predecessors, some Apple, some Microsoft, many tiny companies with good ideas but no business brains. It like the electric car stood on the shoulders of giants.

The electric car still has two major hurdles (I wish it weren't true I really wish that the prediction comes true): 1) the Oil industry is powerful 2) batteries.

With a car, if I want to take a short trip to the local gas me up station then decide to drive 300 miles just to say hey to a friend...I could do that. With an electric car and today's batteries, each "filling" station would have to be able to provide a fully charged, safe battery pack that is compatible with my vehicle.

If better batteries could be made with oil, adoption for electric cars would be overnight and the prediction manifested.

jebblue··on The Really Big One
I can't read the article, says I've read my last complimentary issue. That's in Chrome, I added them to my allowed cookie list. It still doesn't work. I tried Firefox with cookies enabled and it works so guessing something to do with the ad cookies from their site I have blocked.

If I open an Incognito window in Chrome it works.

jebblue··on DigitalOcean Raises $83M in Series B Funding
Same experience here, Linode did their homework and the transition was extremely smooth.
jebblue··on DigitalOcean Raises $83M in Series B Funding
It's been sweet sailing for me for years, maybe you should try one of their other datacenters instead of complaining about Fremont.

Edit: Their support is top of the line.

jebblue··on DigitalOcean Raises $83M in Series B Funding
I use two of their datacenters, not Freemont, the two I use are fantastic. Linode is exceptional.

>> Linode stalling over the past few years

>> And yet the biggest development in recent years at Linode has been a proprietary stats and monitoring system

>> Linode is now switching their entire platform from Xen to KVM, a curious move which will create risk

>> I have been a huge supporter of Linode over the years

Uh huh, right.

jebblue··on Chrome is developing a Sidebar API
It'a good idea, it reminds me of IE Bands, one of the few things I liked about IE:

jebblue··on Ask HN: What is the actual purpose of Docker?
>> I don't even mind Java anymore because the CLASSPATHs

Agree and add that Python's paths (forget what they're called) (as well as Java CLASSPATHS) have been a problem for me on occasion too which means Docker would probably help with all these types of path issues.

jebblue··on Code Specialists Oppose U.S. and British Access to Encrypted Communication
The united States isn't an empire, that's what it was formed to get away from. It's a collection of people, living in different communities called states that strive to stay united to form a more perfect union. It isn't a perfect experiment because people are not perfect but it's the best effort history has seen so far.
jebblue··on Startup Sues a Domain Name Owner to Grab a 16-Year-Old URL
It doesn't look like he was CyberSquatting to me. I hope it resolves in his favor. If the person bringing the suit should win it would set a bad precedent for all Internet business.
jebblue··on FISA court rules NSA can resume bulk data collection
Agree.

jebblue··on Porting the Unity Editor to Linux: Stuff I Wish We’d Done Then
I wanted to play around with Unity several times so if I get to do that it would be fun, thanks to you and your company for looking at making it a reality.
jebblue··on You don't need to daemonize
I wrote a Java server that blocks spam based on my criteria and set it to run like this:

http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/trusty/man8/update-rc.d....

I didn't do any daemonzing like we used to do in the C days so I'm not sure that the systemd approach mentioned in the article does it better (not against the idea, maybe it's needed on non-Ubuntu systems?).

I just needed to write a simple shell script with the basics and this:

...

  case "$1" in
      start)
          startup
      ;;
      stop)
          shutdown
      ;;
      restart)
          restartit
      ;;
  esac
...
jebblue··on Porting the Unity Editor to Linux: Stuff I Wish We’d Done Then
It seems Gtk has won, why don't the QT developers and supporters move to the Gtk camp and work to make it better rather then keep QT alive which just wastes efforts.
jebblue··on Porting the Unity Editor to Linux: Stuff I Wish We’d Done Then
I agree in both cases. There would be no Ubuntu today without Debian (although I've never installed it because I tried years ago and found it to be too difficult which is why I went with Ubuntu after becoming less than enchanted with RedHat) and really I thought case issues were a thing of the 90's, early 2000's at the latest. I've read that Debian has gotten easier to install though but I'm not sure from their web site which one. They need to get someone with a marketing background to help them with their web site.
jebblue··on Porting the Unity Editor to Linux: Stuff I Wish We’d Done Then
I helped build a web service product that ran on Mono in the early 2000's back when I was still also a Windows dev but with the significant improvements over the mid to latter 2000's to the speed and stability of the JVM I dare say (and consider Mojang's success) the JVM would be a better choice for future game engines than Mono. With so much work having gone into using Mono I doubt it would be changed to the JVM but also Microsoft to their credit is open sourcing some/a lot? of the .NET runtime to open platforms like Linux.

The only problem I have with Mono today is Miguel's decision to completely disrespect and disregard the Linux Desktop: http://tirania.org/blog/archive/2012/Aug-29.html

I gave Steam (should be Valve) credit for their work to bring games to Linux, I should have mentioned Unity. Some of the best games I've played in the past 2 years were based on Unity. The Unreal platform brings new promises and will be nice to see games unfold from those on Linux. My money is good for Linux games for my lifetime which hopefully is still decades.
jebblue··on Mario running in Unreal Engine 4 [video]
It looks promising. With Steam's success and now Unreal is back in play, Linux gaming's future and gaming on open platforms in general, gets brighter every day.
jebblue··on Why doesn't Windows recognize a USB device plugged into another port? (2004)
I've only seen better support for hardware across all machines I've ever run Linux on compared to Windows. That is experience across over 2 dozen machines in the past 10 years.
jebblue··on Why doesn't Windows recognize a USB device plugged into another port? (2004)
I consult a lot which means I often have to use a Windows desktop because the IT staff needs it to run Office for people who only know one email client. I mostly work in Linux usually in a VM in these case. To you point, on a new machine designed to run Windows 7, 3 times in the past few months I plug in my external keyboard and it fails. The only resolution is to reboot the windows machine. At least once I've had my USB headset fail, had to reboot Windows. In the past year on a different machine also designed to run Windows I could not get it to detect my Android phone while my Ubuntu desktop has never failed on 3 different machines running Ubuntu.

When people say in any thread that Windows driver support is superior to Linux; the answer from my experience on a number of machines is still no.

jebblue··on The Unix Philosophy
REST is a kludge but it's easy. SOAP as much as I dislike giving Microsoft credit was brilliant, but it was hard.
jebblue··on The Unix Philosophy
I think in terms of declarations, steps, procedures, methods, objects and a clear, logical program flow.

7 years with Ubuntu, I don't see that, what is it you're doing that makes it so difficult for you?
