jeb··on Guinea-Bissau: The Cocaine Coast
What's the big deal. The producers of the drugs are in South America, the consumers of the drugs are in Europe, and the transporters of the drugs are rarely from Guinea.

In west africa, people hardly consume any drugs at all, even the most hardened criminals stop at indian hemp.

Guinea is not a country ravaged by drug war at all, precisly becuase there is no effective police force, and the drugs are not consumed locally.

The people just fly in with their planes, do the transfer of drugs, and fly out. It's actually pretty peaceful.

If there is a problem that Africa does NOT have, it's drugs. Africans transport drugs, but they don't consume them, and as a result, there is very little drug related conflict in Africa.

The solution to what is described in the article is not to build armies on the islands of Guinea, but to simply increase security into Europe. The european market disappears, and the south americans will stop transporting through Africa.

A conference room sounds awkward, why not a bar?
jeb··on Become a farm worker
That would mean that anyone who was out of a job in the city would either need to leave the city or prey on the people within the city who still have money.

Your proposal would lead to a huge de-population of the cities. It would also mean that if by some weird series of events you became unemployed for a while, and could not find a job, you would be forced out to work the fields.

It's much easier to start working the fields than to get back to society. When you need to work for minimum wage every day, you don't have time to find that programming job you're looking for.

jeb··on Ask HN: What's your most interesting life goal currently?
I'm planning to identify a suitable candidate to get married to, and who is genetically appropriate enough to give me good quality kids, then convince this person to marry me and carry my child, within the next year.

Difficult, but I assume interesting.

jeb··on The App Store is for Suckers
The main advantage of the app store is a quick and painless payment method for the end users. Your web app does not offer that.
jeb··on Post from "weev" (AT&T/ipad data hacker) on his arrest and treatment
A goatse symbol as his logo, makes anti-israel videos, has drugs lying around his apartment, describes his own blog posts as excellent, and apparently publicized some type of private information.

This is not a housewife being attacked by a SWAT team, it's someone who is likely to drift in and out of such problems who happens to have drifted in.

jeb··on The First Caucasian Samurai
He was not the first Foreign Samurai though, an African preceeded him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yasuke
jeb··on Prince: "The Internet's completely over,"
Perhaps it makes sense. Artists will soon make their money via concerts. Prince has a series of concerts coming up. He has a huge old-school fan base, so does not need to get his songs out there (people already know him).

His new songs then are more 'rare' among his core demographic (not teens) -> driving more people to his concerts, where he makes the money.

Remember that prince, back in 2001 ALREADY jumped on the internet bandwagon. He offered his songs for download then - he is not anti-internet, he has tried it and has changed his model.

Remember, this dude makes 50million USD a year, more that most of you will make if your startup sells for a huge amount of money. He knows what he's doing.

jeb··on Apple Blocks Developer from App Store
It appears that the way this is working is that iTunes acccounts are being sold in vietnam or china, these devs are purchasing these accounts and buying a bunch of their apps.

So the devs don't seem to be the hackers.

jeb··on WakeMate Update
The big mistake they made was that pre-order. It was a great marketing move in the start, but when things went wrong, it became their biggest enemy.

Moral of the story: Don't collect any money at all from people till you can immediately send them what they paid for.

jeb··on Tesla stock is now back below its IPO price.
The speculators done gone made a lot of money off the geeks. Tesla was a typical speculator IPO, now the reality of the risk facing the company will set in and the price will go to its standard level till they start to show real potential.
jeb··on 1995: The Internet? Bah
Never mock anything technological and new. People will laugh at you for years if you get it wrong. Ask CmdrTaco.

The other way is not true, ask all the people who praised the Segway. Nobody cares that they thought it would be so cool.

jeb··on Traction Trumps Everything
Why do you guys help random people? Out of pure curiosity - is it for profit or just as a contribution back to society?
jeb··on Ask HN: How will it impact my webapp if it is written in Python instead of PHP.
With PHP it will be much much easier to outsource parts of your project compared to python. There are more PHP developers and they are much cheaper.
jeb··on Warning: App Store scrapers can discover apps before their release
What site are you using to view the unreleased app info?
jeb··on [dead]
And if she wins the next election, Sarah Palin can also choose to shut down the internet for 4 months.
jeb··on iTunes accounts hacked by shady developer?
I think I've heard of this trick. What the developers do is that they make the app expensive ($500), then they purchase it with promo-codes, leading to it going into the top-grossing list. Then they switch it to 99cents, but since it takes some time for it to slide off the top-grossing list, a lot of people buy the app. This gives it enough sales to break into the top 100 of the category charts, and it will then use that momentum to rise up.

Devs use such tricks - if you keep in touch with the forum, you'll see some crazy stuff people are doing to sell.

jeb··on iTunes accounts hacked by shady developer?
Apple is on the case, if you read the follow-up. Also, the last time something like this happened, Apple was very pro-active, fixed the issue really quickly.

I think the problem was really just that Apple didn't know about it.

jeb··on iTunes accounts hacked by shady developer?
To calculate the daily income of this guy:

$5 per app and he has 50 apps in the top 100. Daily sales are about 30 for each app, so total of 1500 sales per day. At $5, he's making $7500 a day.

In the 3 weeks he has exploited this hack: $157 Thousand dollars. I wonder who is paying for that.

jeb··on iTunes accounts hacked by shady developer?
I believe the situation has been like this for more than a week, I observed this more than a week ago, leading to the editorial slant.

Some proof, take a look here: http://www.appexplorer.com/a/367996918/

I actually started on June 14th, so about 3 weeks, without any reaction from Apple.

jeb··on Total Immersion: How I Learned to Swim Effortlessly in 10 Days and You Can Too
It reads like an affiliate advert for total immersion.
jeb··on Ask HN: do you have a five year plan?
I do, but it's not fixed. Just a goal - "I want to achieve this using that, but not the precise details".
jeb··on Fairly Unremarkable Backgrounds
I'd hire people who studied Computer Engineering. Ask the average programmer how data moved around on the motherboard, or what exactly a processor does and he has next to no idea. Computer engineers learn the fundamentals, while computer scientists learn the abstractions.
jeb··on Buffett Donates $1.6 Billion to Gates Foundation
The Gates Foundation seems to have a lot of high-profile donators sticking a lot of tax-free money in there.

Not to be cynical or anything - but there is as much malaria in the 3rd world as there was before this foundation started.

jeb··on Zed Shaw has Left Dropbox
Let me put it this way: You're a talented singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer. The company needs a person who plays bass. They could hire you as a bassist, but that's not where you belong. You're a rockstar. You belong in the front.

What I'm saying is not slander, it's the opposite. YOU are putting yourself in the wrong spot, because you should not be playing bass when you have all these other talents. You should form your own band and create your own vision.

Imagine you are casting a band and you put Carlos Santana as the guitarrist of Britney Spears. Sure, he's an excellent guitar player, but that's now where he belongs. He should not play guitar in Britneys band and dabble in experimental rock music, he should be focusing on his own thing.

That's what I mean - many companies simply need a cog. They need some small piece that will keep the machine turning smoothly. They need a pawn - and though you could stick a queen in there to do the job of the pawn, it's not where it belongs.

And when someone says the queen should not be used as a pawn, the queen should not be arguing that it should be a pawn.

jeb··on Ask HN: Feedback on ToutPourMoniPad.com (ipad case finder for the french market)
What's with the iPad Case Finder startups? Is it some hot new market or what?
jeb··on Zed Shaw has Left Dropbox
And that's the problem with Rockstar Programmers. They know they are rockstars, they know that they can get funding for their own product at a moments notice, they know that they can always go on a speaking tour.

You need them, but they don't need you, and they know it. So they walk in and want to do what they want to do, they have no intention of doing the shitty stuff. But work in a company has a lot of shitty stuff to be done.

The problem with Zed is that though he is a good developer, he's also a good writer and probably a good talker. Those last two are important to him, and when people work at companies, they should not be having two big side projects (writing and talking). It distracts from the work.

All the rockstar programmers of the last few years all seemed to have entered CTO roles, have started their own companies, or are important people in very big companies. Very few are still just slugging away at code at small startups.

This story is basically why you should not hire rockstar programmers. Hire normal people who depend on you for their income.

jeb··on Ask HN: Review My Startup: Szpil
Am I going to have to manually enter each call myself? If so, then no.
jeb··on Are There More Girl Geniuses?
The article seems neutral till the last lines:

The developing gender gap in the gifted programs of New York City does not signal that girls are smarter than boys. Rather, it exemplifies how well-intentioned government officials and educators can disregard boys’ needs and abilities and unwittingly adopt policies detrimental to boys’ well-being. It is a small part of the long story of how American boys across the ability spectrum and in all age groups have become second-class citizens in the nation’s schools.

Yikes, seems like few people use the RSS icon to subscribe. I'd better an "RSS Subscribe" link to my website.
