jeanofthedead··on 72% of smart TVs and 46% of game consoles hardcode DNS settings
I was able to do this with my TCL/Roku TV a few months back. My curiosity got the best of me with the announcement of their latest OS, so I upgraded to see what the new features were like. Now I am stuck in the ecosystem, as the downgrade feature is completely disabled (even from a USB stick, with no internet connection, after a factory reset). Luckily, I use a Pihole as my DNS on my router, but still. Super annoying.

From a Reddit comment: "The home assistant tp-link integration already makes use of the local api connecting to the devices. I'd definitely recommend using a reserved dhcp address and specifying the devices in your ha config (not using auto discovery)."

I use Pi-hole (https://pi-hole.net) to block my Roku TV from sending out analytics (and from displaying ads).

There's also Homebridge/HOOBS, if you want to link 3rd-party IoT devices to Apple Homekit. Many of the plugins run locally.

It's a lot nicer importing and exporting photos with Amazon Prime Photos. Google Takeout is a nightmare to use.

The full-size photos are still compressed, unfortunately. And Google Photos turns Live Photos into 2-3 sec video files, which destroyed a huge chunk of my photo library when I made the switch to iCloud Photo Library.

Idk. I prefer AM's recommendations, integration with ATV4K, HomePods, lyrics, music videos, separation of music and podcasts, and audio fidelity.

It really depends on what devices you use. For example, I have Homebridge set up on a Raspberry Pi to link my array of unsupported 'smart' devices to Apple's Homekit. I tried using Home Assistant (Hassio), but found the lack of support for several brands a dealbreaker. I wish the dev communities communicated more, between the two.

There's a fantastic free tool called RansomWhere by Objective-See that I use to monitor the rapid creation of encrypted files on my Mac. It notifies me from time to time during installation processes that something possibly malicious is going on.

I would highly recommend ProtonMail, Tutanota, Fastmail, or CripText. You can use Google Takeout to create an mbox file of your inbox, fwiw.
