jdorfman··on GitHub code search – waiting list signup
You're welcome. We agree, good times ahead =)
jdorfman··on GitHub code search – waiting list signup
Congrats on the launch Luke =)

We (Sourcegraph) have other features to stay competitive. One thing we have been working on indexing other code hosts like Eclipse Foundation, Crates.io, etc.

We put this together anticipating these questions: https://docs.sourcegraph.com/getting-started/github-vs-sourc...

We also just launched Search Ranking and Relevance: https://about.sourcegraph.com/blog/new-search-ranking

More to come! And BTW we are happy to have competition, GitHub is a great brand and it will only make code search better for all developers.

jdorfman··on Migrating from Monaco to CodeMirror at Sourcegraph
I just want to say what a pleasure it is working with the maintainer Marijn Haverbeke. If you use CodeMirror consider supporting his work: https://marijnhaverbeke.nl/fund/
jdorfman··on Steve Yegge Joins as Head of Engineering of Sourcegraph
We need to make that more clear. Right now we only index ~4.6k packages:

Adding to my list: https://github.com/sourcegraph/community/issues/36

jdorfman··on Steve Yegge Joins as Head of Engineering of Sourcegraph
We index other code hosts besides just GH.

Rust Dependencies (crates.io) Python Dependencies (PyPI) Go Dependencies NPM Dependencies src.fedoraproject.org JVM Dependencies GitLab.com GitHub Public

and as of yesterday Savannah/GNU - https://github.com/sourcegraph/community/issues/38

More to come.

jdorfman··on Ask HN: How Do You Navigate Code?
FWIW we (Sourcegraph) have updated our IntellIJ IDEA plugin: https://plugins.jetbrains.com/plugin/9682-sourcegraph
jdorfman··on Ask HN: Courses explaining well-written codebases?
We recently launched a newsletter called Tour de Source that dives into the source code of open source projects and how they work. So far we have Caddy and TS ESLint and a few in the pipe.

jdorfman··on SearchHut
Looks like SourceHut is down so I'm not sure what projects need indexing.

In other news we now index 87k Rust packages on crates.io

jdorfman··on Fund OSS through package managers
Indeed Max is trying to do that:

We're here :)
jdorfman··on Quickly find sensitive files in your GitHub repo
I agree, some do but more should dare I say need to follow suit.
jdorfman··on Quickly find sensitive files in your GitHub repo
This is great thanks for putting it on my radar.
jdorfman··on Show HN: No Secrets – A bookmarklet for finding secrets in your Repos
Hey HN,

Looking forward to your feedback.

jdorfman··on Meta Is Transferring Jest to the OpenJS Foundation
haha. Yeah but still Next, like React is run by a company, which means a small group sets the priorities.
jdorfman··on Meta Is Transferring Jest to the OpenJS Foundation
> Do you think React will survive without Meta?

I do. The ecosystem is strong and if handed over to a foundation like the OpenJS Foundation it has a better chance of evolving. From my perspective, React is what FB/Meta needs, not necessarily what the community wants. There is no oversight or governance which is concerning given that many developers make a living off of React.

For an expanded explanation see YouTube/KTQVBXb0uPM?t=328

jdorfman··on Meta Is Transferring Jest to the OpenJS Foundation
Good. Next should be React.
jdorfman··on We lost 54k GitHub stars
DevRel 101. If a project had 54k stars and they obviously made a mistake why take the chance of them writing a blog post and having it hit the front page on HN?

If Nat was still CEO this wouldn't have been a thing.

jdorfman··on News for the Future of BeeWare
My heart dropped when reading the title because Russell has dedicated years to BeeWare.

As a non-code contributor to the project (years ago) I'm so happy to know BeeWare will be able to sustain itself for the foreseeable future.

Congrats to Russell and his team. Props to Anaconda for being a good steward of the open source community.

jdorfman··on Ask HN: Best Ergonomic Chair?
Awesome thanks! Should have searched first.
jdorfman··on $ sudo rm -rf / === NPM install
Great article. The JS ecosystem/supply chain scares me. 94% of all active repos on GitHub rely on Javascript (according to the 2020 state of the octoverse report). There is a lot of motivation for black hats to insert Bitcoin miners into semi-popular npm packages so they can fly under the radar. Scary times.
jdorfman··on Open-Source Contributors Worth Sponsoring
Great point, didn't even consider that.
jdorfman··on Open-Source Contributors Worth Sponsoring
IMO Sindre is still under paid comparing that to a distinguished software engineer's salary[0].

jdorfman··on Open-Source Contributors Worth Sponsoring
I would like to nominate XhmikosR[0], maintainer of Bootstrap. At the time of this writing he has 4 sponsors.

We were co-maintainers of BootstrapCDN and even though we recently archived & split our Open Collective earnings, I know he barely gets by.

jdorfman··on SFC files lawsuit against Vizio Inc. for GPL violations
oh my bad, @dang not sure what to do.
jdorfman··on Mewe.com
Free Forever, No Ads. Not sure how this will work but I'm curious to see if they can pull it off.
jdorfman··on Elizabeth Holmes urged employees to hide Theranos’ lab equipment from inspectors
Tyler Schultz and Erika Cheung risked it all. They saved lives by blowing the whistle knowing it could potentially ruin their careers, relationships, financial stability (lawyer fees).
