jdminhbg··on We're Charging Our Cars Wrong
We passed legislation spending a few billion on charging stations and totally failed to get any built.
jdminhbg··on Bald eagles are thriving again after near extinction
Seems to me like the post is just noting that if you want to postfix "in the US" to "endangered," you should more properly postfix "in the contiguous US." I have no idea why the DDT rant.
jdminhbg··on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
It's fine to continue providing the service as long as people know it's not encrypted. I am not worried about my photos being subpoenaed; I am worried about losing them. I'd rather have the service.
jdminhbg··on Inside Musk's Aggressive Incursion into the Federal Government
> Elon Musk doesn’t have the authority to overturn programs and spending priorities decided by Congress. And yet he is doing that, for example he "deleted" 18F that build the Direct File site for filing taxes.

This is the problem I have with all of the commentary on DOGE, it's extremely slippery about what is being paid for by whom and how. The official website for 18F says they are not allocated funding by Congress: https://18f.gsa.gov/about/

jdminhbg··on String of recent killings linked to Bay Area 'Zizians'
Or what if they were rationalists? Would they include that in the headline?
jdminhbg··on Boom XB-1 First Supersonic Flight [video]
> I'm not sure why you're being downvoted because you're right

OP is being downvoted for saying there is still not supersonic civil aviation on a video showing a civil aircraft going supersonic.

jdminhbg··on Boom's XB-1 becomes first civil aircraft to go supersonic
I thought for sure this was just a bad headline, but no, the article makes the same mistake. Maybe someone can find a better source, this is still a good story.
jdminhbg··on No one is disrupting banks – at least not the big ones
There used to actually be lots of new banks, now there are some: https://www.statista.com/statistics/193052/change-in-number-...
jdminhbg··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
The Luigi some people have constructed in their minds is a symptom of an overly inactive justice system. The Luigi of real life is the symptom of a man suffering a psychotic break.
jdminhbg··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
SFFA v Harvard (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Students_for_Fair_Admissions_v...) outlawed affirmative action in public institutions, but I think most legal observers assume that if someone brings a case against the same thing in private institutions to the Supreme Court, they'll outlaw it there too.
jdminhbg··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
It's interesting seeing reactions to this. My first take was "of course he appointed Dana White, he's a big MMA dork now." The connection to Trump didn't occur to me til later.
jdminhbg··on Starlink is now cheaper than leading internet provider in some African countries
You ban the importation of satellite dishes, and you don’t let Starlink build ground stations. You can still get around this, just like people still import drugs, but you can make it harder.
jdminhbg··on Predictions Scorecard, 2025 January 01
Ok, but crashes are much worse than navigational issues or accidentally looping. It’s only status quo bias that makes us think driving is more solved if you get the accidental looping fixed before the crashing.
jdminhbg··on Predictions Scorecard, 2025 January 01
> But I see so many devs typing here saying how vital AI is to their writing code efficiently and quickly now. If that is true then you need way less devs.

Sure, in the same sense that editors and compilers mean you need way less devs.

jdminhbg··on Predictions Scorecard, 2025 January 01
> It's just not a solved problem yet.

Human driving isn't a solved problem either; the difference is that when a human driver needs intervention it just crashes.

jdminhbg··on Elon Musk wanted an OpenAI for-profit
Again, you're just assuming you can infinitely replicate AGI, and there's no reason to think that's the case. It's only always cheaper to replicate AGI if there is no resource constraint on doing so.
jdminhbg··on Elon Musk wanted an OpenAI for-profit
The way comparative advantage works, even if an AGI is better than me at Task A and Task B, if it is better at Task A than Task B, it'll do Task A and I'll do Task B.

I think a lot of people confuse AGI with infinite AGI.

jdminhbg··on U.S. math scores drop on major international test
CA is a pretty big state, but even still is not the only one with closures that lasted over a year.
jdminhbg··on U.S. math scores drop on major international test
This seems unfairly downvoted as a sincere question.

The answer is that the types of standardized tests that these country-wide statistics are based on are not, in the US at least, the tests that generate your grades or your university admission.

jdminhbg··on U.S. math scores drop on major international test
Well, one is real and one is not, so it is probably an or.
jdminhbg··on U.S. math scores drop on major international test
> Why would "COVID" only impact the US? It's a global pandemic?

Schools in much of the US were closed longer than many of those around the world.

jdminhbg··on Bottles of OOP now available in Python
In this case, the missing '99' isn't a typo, it's deliberate by HN to eliminate clickbaity headlines like '7 Ways To Be A Better Programmer.'
jdminhbg··on YouTube Premium Showing Ads
Doesn't seem like anyone here is talking about exactly what ads these are, but as far as I can tell, these are banner ads for YouTube TV's NFL Sunday Ticket that show up on the home page when you are browsing for videos. To me, this is about as annoying as a recommendation I don't want, and I get plenty of those, especially for news content when something happens.

The headline (YouTube Premium Showing Ads) makes it sound like if you pay for YouTube Premium you are now getting ads in videos just like normal YouTube, but maybe a little less, but this does not seem to be the case.

jdminhbg··on Nutrient levels in retail grocery stores
> If you walk into a booth and that vendor is selling over 5 types of produce, there's no way they all ripened at the same time.

This makes me think this person simply has no idea how growing food works at all.

jdminhbg··on Touchscreens are out, and tactile controls are back
I press the button on the turn signal stalk to turn on the wipers on my Tesla.
jdminhbg··on Meta Bans Accounts Tracking Private Jets for Zuckerberg, Musk
He's definitely 10,000x better at running a social media conglomerate than I am, if that's what you're asking.
jdminhbg··on [dead]
Japanese high command appears unconcerned that the country has been governed by Douglas MacArthur for five years while I’ve been holding strong on this island
jdminhbg··on Starship Flight 5 [video]
There used to be a Twitter AppleTV app and I recently saw an X app for TV platforms has been brought back, but I don’t know if the AppleTV version is out yet.

Of course I’d rather they just stream to YouTube in 4K.

jdminhbg··on Software Engineer Pay Heatmap Across the US
> The "Greater Portland Area" stretches all the way to the southern border of Oregon.

There may be an off-the-grid remote developer in Steens Mountain somewhere, but there aren't any employers there.

jdminhbg··on Congress fights to keep AM radio in cars
If you’re in the kind of Mad Max scenario where you are manually pumping gas, you might as well be hotwiring solar panels for your EV while you’re at it.
