jdhzzz··on What is the size of Yemen? (2024)
It's an AI hallucination in slow motion.
jdhzzz··on Ryanair flight landed at Manchester airport with six minutes of fuel left
Why such a large surplus?
jdhzzz··on Do I not like Ruby anymore? (2024)
I pretty much hate any screwdriver that's not a Robertson.
jdhzzz··on Will Smith's concert crowds are real, but AI is blurring the lines
You will see the same thing on any online real estate listing. I spend more time wondering why it looks so weird than I do looking at what the picture is attempting to show.
jdhzzz··on 95% of generative AI pilots at companies are failing – MIT report
I read that as I-Ding a bird. It was a second of wondering what I-Ding a bird was until I got to "Merlin" and realized it was ID-ing a bird (face-palm emoji here).
jdhzzz··on Face it: you're a crazy person
"Eighty percent of success is showing up." attributed to Woody Allen.
jdhzzz··on Most Illinois farmland is not owned by farmers
I'm in CT and was told one of the big advantages of a trust is speed. It can take 10-12 months to clear probate while the trust goes the the beneficiary(ies) more or less immediately.
jdhzzz··on Jack Dorsey's Block to lay off nearly 1k workers in another reorganization
From the quote: “none of the above are trying to hit a specific financial target, replacing folks with AI, or changing our headcount cap,” I infer all three played a part. (sorry for using capital letters)
jdhzzz··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
Well an upper bound anyway. Maybe, "The Art of the Deal" could have gotten it a lot closer to $1.2 B.
jdhzzz··on California bans sell-by dates
I proudly store ketchup in the pantry. No amount of recently added "For best results, refrigerate after opening." on the label will convince me otherwise. Cold ketchup is in no way "best".
jdhzzz··on Studios: Please Don't Spoil the Movie We Are Seated to See
Hoo-boy, had I gone I'd have missed the first 20 minutes of the movie. Since movies now have preassigned seats I generally aim for 15-20 minutes after the time on the ticket.
jdhzzz··on Patent troll Sable pays up, dedicates all its patents to the public

Not doing that is why future generations will loathe me and my generation.
jdhzzz··on Things my girlfriend and I have argued about
It's a feature, not a bug.
jdhzzz··on Things my girlfriend and I have argued about
I imagine most people when reading this think: "I can see that, anything for fashion." Shrug and think nothing more of it. What would the reaction be were the sexes reversed and the guy said: "Please put my wallet and phone in your purse, I've no pockets."
jdhzzz··on Is My Blue Your Blue?
I did it on IPS laptop display and got 175. On my OLED phone I got 179. I am more in agreement with the phone results, but the turquoise on the phone looked even greener to me.
jdhzzz··on No "Hello", No "Quick Call", and No Meetings Without an Agenda
I still have PTSD from pre-COVID days when I would be working at in my cubicle and have someone "drive-by" with a quick question and plop their laptop on my desk.

"Can I ask you a question?" (Ugh) "Sure."

It might only take five minutes. Then I'd reconnect to _my_ work. That and getting over my, admittedly emotional, irritation at the interruption would take another 5 minutes.

I really liked being able to delay those folks to when it was convenient for _me_ while working from home.

jdhzzz··on How to avoid losing items? Holding pens
Same here. I came away wondering if I had fallen for click bait.

I try to stare hard at the thing I wish to put down for at least a count of two. That usually brings me "into the moment" and I put it where it belongs. I don't always remember to do it, but it works when I do.

The worst for me are my clip on sunglasses. I take them off when going inside and don't wish them in my pants pocket where they will get broken. Consequently, I tend to set them down "wherever" and lose track of them. Particularly when conditions change, e.g. dusk, when I go back out and they are no longer needed. Shirt pockets would resolve that issue, but I'm not going to change my my entire wardrobe to resolve this issue.

jdhzzz··on Stocks trampled as Nikkei crashes 13%
Stocks just went on sale.
jdhzzz··on How I Use "AI"
"And that's where language models come in. Because most new-to-me frameworks/tools like Docker, or Flexbox, or React, aren't new to other people. There are probably tens to hundreds of thousands of people in the world who understand each of these things thoroughly. And so current language models do to. " Apparently not using it to proof-read or it would end with "too. "

jdhzzz··on H-1B visa fraud alive and well amid anti-abuse efforts
Would a 1 year ban for H1B for Apple be that big of a problem after a "significant" layoff?

Or maybe can only apply for up to a maximum of some (10%? 15%? 25%) percentage of the last year's layoffs?

Right on both counts
jdhzzz··on Bioluminescent petunias now available for U.S. market
I stand corrected, I believe they could get an injunction to prevent me from propagating the petunias (currently on order!), but likely wouldn't be worth the trouble.
jdhzzz··on Bioluminescent petunias now available for U.S. market
From the site:

Can I propagate or breed the Firefly Petunias? Our Firefly Petunias are protected under patent, and as such, propagation and breeding are not permitted. These petunias are sold exclusively for personal use.

Propagation IS permitted as long as it's for personal use so your scenario is fine. Selling a propagated plant to your neighbor (or anyone else) violates the law.

jdhzzz··on To revive Portland, officials seek to ban public drug use
Not the original commenter, but I took the response regarding bounced back to refer to retail commerce, not office occupancy. I would not expect office occupancy to EVER fully recover in the US.
jdhzzz··on Turbo Pascal Turns 40
Missed this and commented separately. Thanks for reminding me of the model. This was my upgrade to the TI 99/4 I drove across the state of CT to spend 995 1980-ish dollars on.
