Not the OP but in my case it was a Sanyo with 2 floppies.

That was me.

Got fired. Kinda. I was laid off.

jdhzzz··on Use YouTube to improve your English pronunciation
It's explained in this SNL sketch "Washington's dream": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYqfVE-fykk&t=1s
jdhzzz··on How pencils are made in a Japanese factory [video]
My thoughts exactly. What am I seeing that wasn't obviously not available in the 1950s?
jdhzzz··on Perl 5.38
How? I only know of subprocess.

Did you call them "drop light" or "trouble light" (Drop light for me)

We'll make cars so cheap only the rich can afford horses. We'll make air travel so cheap, only the rich can afford travel by ship. We'll make AR/VR so compelling only the rich can afford travel.
jdhzzz··on Shoot the arrow, then paint the target around it
IIRC a Rolling Stone reviewer wrote circa 1975: I have seen the future of Rock and Roll; it's Bruce Springsteen.
jdhzzz··on Ejaculation frequency and prostate cancer (2022)
"You're only as happy as your saddest child."
jdhzzz··on Be wary of imitating high-status people who can afford to countersignal
This makes me think of Adam Carolla's Rich Man-Poor Man. E.g. "Made love next to a fountain." "Doesn't drive himself to work." Many examples on Twitter and Reddit.
jdhzzz··on An interactive guide to Flexbox
Old guy here. I can remember fighting with and complaining about horizontal scroll bars on wide html pages. I didn't realize how good I had it. Now I fight with browser based UI's that rearrange themselves to fit in whatever width the browser is set to. Sounds good. Oh, that nav-bar on the left side doesn't fit? No problem. Now it appears as a set of sub-tabs arranged horizontally. The app knows where things are, but I don't. No thanks.

Don't get me started on links that aren't underlined blue font and only reveal themselves on mouse-over.

jdhzzz··on FTX to file for U.S. bankruptcy, CEO resigns
Gotta double up to catch up.
jdhzzz··on From zero to 10M lines of Kotlin
why does navigating to this document, open a new tab, close the old tab. The result being there is no history that the "back" button (FireFox here) can get to. Seems like a lot of trouble to go to just to annoy me.
jdhzzz··on Ask HN: Why is Microsoft Teams still so bad?
To make the TEAMs experience even worse, our IT department, okay at the behest of the legal team, put a policy in place that removes chat history older than 24 hours thus removing the last shred of utility from the product.
jdhzzz··on Ask HN: Why is Microsoft Teams still so bad?
Things I like (What?):

Ctrl-Shift-V pastes into TEAMs with no formatting. Should be part of the OS. Contrary to WebEx (what we came from for meetings), joining a TEAMs meeting from both PC and phone joins you as one participant, not 2.

jdhzzz··on Germany pushes for ‘pay as you fly’ model
If it were the US they could just seize the cheap ticket and resell it for more per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelo_v._City_of_New_London.

jdhzzz··on Carmakers feel chip crisis easing
Agreed. I'm firmly in the boat of "expensive things own you" so I avoid owning them. I do try to take care of what I have but don't obsess over things that can and do happen.

That said. I did get rid of a perfectly good 2002 Camry to buy a Mustang Mach e about 14 months ago. It was pure indulgence and I'm still smitten. I try to take care of it, but don't park across 2 spaces an extra 200 meters away while at the grocery.

jdhzzz··on 9-Euro-Ticket
Who-hoo, let's all go to the summer long super-spreader event.
jdhzzz··on Show HN: I made a website for you to travel the world in first-person POV
It took me a while to pick up on that. I first thought I was choosing where to go next. I then wasted a bunch of time on it. Fun.
jdhzzz··on Tokamak Energy sets a temperature record among commercial fusion companies
Not mutually exclusive. How about a fusion powered yatch?
jdhzzz··on New iPhone SE
Am probably older than your Mom (an demographic/actuarial guess) and I am sorely tempted to get it. I have been team Nexus/Pixel for a decade but am miffed at the upsizing of the devices. adding 50% screen space doesn't make up for 5x diminished visual acuity. A random comment I saw somewhere about how bad CarPlay was compared to Android Auto gives me pause. I have become dependent on effortless linking of phone to car.
jdhzzz··on New iPhone SE
I devote significant time to avoiding taking on sysadmin tasks. Just got Frontier Fiber. Had always done my own network admin, but they throw in a couple of routers and I decided it was better to have something they supported than try to make sure I had coverage on every square inch (sorry from USA) of yard. We'll see if I am happy with that choice.

jdhzzz··on This year, Oculus has sold more headsets than Microsoft did Xboxes
I've had the Quest 2 for only about a month, but still don't own an FPS. I was impressed with the amount of non FPS games such as boxing, mini-golf, and table tennis.

Aside: The relatively low friction involved in starting game play has me playing this far more than I ever did with my rarely used X-box One. It remains to be seen whether this lasts beyond winter here in the northeast US.

jdhzzz··on Apple execs describe a “unique arrangement” with Netflix (2018)

I among them using a VM over Citrix as my "work machine". Other than being under powered (typical one size fits all) it is _wonderful_. Always logged in with everything up and available. Sign my company up.
