jdhuang··on Here Come China's Drones
We already have automatic ground turrets that use heat signatures and computer vision

But at the end of the day, everything loses against a single nuclear bomb.

jdhuang··on Why Watching DVDs on Linux is Illegal in the USA
Curious to hear whether these weird Linux-asymmetries apply to Blu-Ray or online digital media (e.g. Hulu/Netflix) too.

I would be willing to accept the fact that DVDs were invented so long ago that some of their restrictions are a little archaic.

jdhuang··on Ask HN: What is your best online purchase?
Yeah, heh.

I totally Amazon Subscribe-and-Save all my toilet paper now (but I don't always like to admit it)

jdhuang··on Please critique our open source PaaS website
I'd be curious to hear who you think the target audience/demographic is for your landing page.

In particular, I find that the page is succinct at describing "what" AppScale is but not "why" I should click either Join or Download within the first 45 seconds

jdhuang··on Why teens are tiring of Facebook
What's crazy is that Facebook has only been a public open-signup website for ~6 years, and it's so tempting to assume it will be around and popular forever -- I mean, why wouldn't it?

But at the end of the day we really have no idea what the world will be like in 15 years.

It only took MySpace 3 years to fall out of favor.

jdhuang··on Why Python, Ruby, and Javascript are Slow
Interesting presentation, but it can't be the whole story. Even projects like SciPy which use the most rudimentary data structures (basically just a large array of floats) and algorithms (sometimes just looping through the elements in order a few times) see a considerable advantage when rewritten in C.

jdhuang··on Show HN: Indoor Location you can try yourself
Heh. Not the first time it's happened :P
jdhuang··on Show HN: Indoor Location you can try yourself
It's actually based on the ambient Wi-Fi signature of the airwaves around you. There is no image recognition involved!
jdhuang··on Show HN: Indoor Location you can try yourself
In our experience, we've found that most access points do in fact have a fixed power. Either way, the system can accomodate some amount of dynamic changes.

Fair enough. We have a 90 second video on YouTube that should give you a sense of what you'll get: www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_GdXp_Swjs

But basically, yes. It lets you build indoor positioning by walking around my room.

jdhuang··on Diffbot launches a web page classifier API: analyzes a day of Twitter
I thought this was super-clever when I first came across DiffBot last year. Can't wait to see what they come out with next.

Keep it up!

jdhuang··on Show HN: Indoor Location you can try yourself
@untog: It's actually a sensor fusion approach that combines both accelerometers and Wi-Fi signals.

Oh also, if you're up for learning more about the technology/platform in general, take a look at blog.wifislam.com

If you don’t have time to try the app, watch this video instead. It’s 90 seconds. www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_GdXp_Swjs
